节:
52
启示之地:
麦加
Adapted from Tafsir Ibn Ashur
Themes and purpose:
This Makkan surah affirms the truth of the Quran's divine origin, proving Allah’s absolute Oneness and the reality of the Resurrection. It strongly warns the deniers by citing the destruction of past nations (like the people of Nūḥ and ʿĀd) and uses the prayer of Prophet Abraham as a central argument to challenge the polytheists of Makkah.
Context of Revelation:
Era: Makkan according to the majority view. Some have said that a few ayahs (from 28 to 29/30]) are Madinan as they were revealed concerning the polytheists at Badr. Ibn ʿĀshūr maintains that while these verses could be understood as an allusion to the coming Battle of Badr, it does not necessitate a later date of revelation.
Chronology: It has been counted as the 70th surah in the well-known chronology of Jābir ibn Zayd, revealed after Sūrat al-Shūrā and before al-Anbiyā’.
Name and Ayah Count:
Name: The surah’s only known name is "Sūrat Ibrāhīm". It is named for the Prophet Abraham, whose prayer for Makkah is contained within it, and to distinguish it from the other Alif-Lām-Rā’ surahs (like Yūnus and Hūd).
Ayah Count: 52 (Kūfah), 54 (Madīnah), 50 (Shām), or 51 (Baṣrah).
