— Alauddin Mansour

(O Muhammad), by revealing the Qur'an to you We narrate to you in the best manner the stories of the past although before this narration you were utterly unaware of them1.

— Tafheem-ul-Quran - Abul Ala Maududi

(It happened) when Yūsuf said to his father, “My father, I saw (in dream) eleven stars and the Sun and the Moon; I saw them all fallen prostrate before me.’’

— Mufti Taqi Usmani

Joseph said to his father, ‘Father, I dreamed of eleven stars and the sun and the moon: I saw them all bow down before me,’

— Abdul Haleem

Behold! Joseph said to his father: "O my father! I did see eleven stars and the sun and the moon: I saw them prostrate themselves to me!"

— Yusuf Ali

— Alauddin Mansour

Call to mind when Joseph said to his father: "My father! I saw (in a dream) eleven stars and the sun and the moon: I saw them prostrating themselves before me."

— Tafheem-ul-Quran - Abul Ala Maududi

He said, “My son, do not relate your dream to your brothers, lest they should devise a plan against you. Surely, Satan is an open enemy for mankind.

— Mufti Taqi Usmani

and he replied, ‘My son, tell your brothers nothing of this dream, or they may plot to harm you––Satan is man’s sworn enemy.

— Abdul Haleem

Said (the father): "My (dear) little son! relate not thy vision to thy brothers, lest they concoct a plot against thee: for Satan is to man an avowed enemy!

— Yusuf Ali

— Alauddin Mansour

His father said: "My son! Do not relate your dream to your brothers lest they hatch a plot to harm you1. Indeed Satan is man's open enemy.

— Tafheem-ul-Quran - Abul Ala Maududi

And it will be in this way that your Lord will choose you and teach you the correct interpretation of events, and will perfect His bounty upon you and upon the House of Ya‘qūb, as He has perfected it earlier upon your fore-fathers, Ibrāhīm and IsHāq. Surely, your Lord is All-Wise, All-Knowing.”

— Mufti Taqi Usmani

This is about how your Lord will choose you, teach you to interpret dreams, and perfect His blessing on you and the House of Jacob, just as He perfected it earlier on your forefathers Abraham and Isaac: your Lord is all knowing and wise.’

— Abdul Haleem

"Thus will thy Lord choose thee and teach thee the interpretation of stories (and events) and perfect His favour to thee and to the posterity of Jacob - even as He perfected it to thy fathers Abraham and Isaac aforetime! for Allah is full of knowledge and wisdom."

— Yusuf Ali

— Alauddin Mansour

(As you have seen in the dream), so will your Lord choose you1 (for His task) and will impart to you the comprehension of the deeper meaning of things2 and will bestow the full measure of His favour upon you and upon the house of Jacob even as He earlier bestowed it in full measure upon your forefathers, Abraham and Isaac. Surely your Lord is All- Knowing, All-Wise."3

— Tafheem-ul-Quran - Abul Ala Maududi

ﭿ

Surely, in (the story of) Yūsuf and his brothers, there are signs for those who ask.

— Mufti Taqi Usmani

There are lessons in the story of Joseph and his brothers for all who seek them.

— Abdul Haleem

Verily in Joseph and his brethren are signs (or symbols) for seekers (after Truth).

— Yusuf Ali

— Alauddin Mansour

Verily in the story of Joseph and his brothers there are many signs for those who inquire (about the truth).

— Tafheem-ul-Quran - Abul Ala Maududi

(It happened) when they said, “Yūsuf and his brother are dearer to our father than we are, while we are a whole group. Surely, our father is in clear error.

— Mufti Taqi Usmani

The brothers said [to each other], ‘Although we are many, Joseph and his brother are dearer to our father than we are–– our father is clearly in the wrong.’

— Abdul Haleem

They said: "Truly Joseph and his brother are loved more by our father than we: But we are a goodly body! really our father is obviously wandering (in his mind)!

— Yusuf Ali

— Alauddin Mansour

And call to mind when the brothers of Joseph conferred together and said: "Surely Joseph and his brother1 are dearer to our father than we are, although we are a group of so many. Our father is clearly mistaken.2

— Tafheem-ul-Quran - Abul Ala Maududi

Let us kill Yūsuf, or throw him at some place on earth, and thus your father’s full attention will be devoted for you alone, and after doing that, you may become a righteous people.’’

— Mufti Taqi Usmani

[One of them said], ‘Kill Joseph or banish him to another land, and your father’s attention will be free to turn to you. After that you can be righteous.’

— Abdul Haleem

"Slay ye Joseph or cast him out to some (unknown) land, that so the favour of your father may be given to you alone: (there will be time enough) for you to be righteous after that!"

— Yusuf Ali

— Alauddin Mansour

So either kill Joseph or cast him into some distant land so that your father's attention may become exclusively yours. And after so doing become righteous."1

— Tafheem-ul-Quran - Abul Ala Maududi

One of them said, “Do not kill Yūsuf; rather, cast him into the bottom of a pit, so that some wayfarers may pick him up, if you are going to do something anyway.’’

— Mufti Taqi Usmani

[Another of them] said, ‘Do not kill Joseph, but, if you must, throw him into the hidden depths of a well where some caravan may pick him up.’

— Abdul Haleem

Said one of them: "Slay not Joseph, but if ye must do something, throw him down to the bottom of the well: he will be picked up by some caravan of travellers."

— Yusuf Ali

— Alauddin Mansour

Thereupon one of them said: "Do not kill Joseph, but if you are bent upon doing something, cast him down to the bottom of some dark pit, perhaps some caravan passing by will take him out of it."

— Tafheem-ul-Quran - Abul Ala Maududi

They said (to Ya‘qūb), “Our father, why is it that you do not trust us about Yūsuf, while we are his well-wishers indeed.

— Mufti Taqi Usmani

They said to their father, ‘Why do you not trust us with Joseph? We wish him well.

— Abdul Haleem

They said: "O our father! why dost thou not trust us with Joseph,- seeing we are indeed his sincere well-wishers?

— Yusuf Ali

— Alauddin Mansour

After so deciding they said to their father: "Why is it that you do not trust us regarding Joseph although we are his true well-wishers?"

— Tafheem-ul-Quran - Abul Ala Maududi
