	Al-Baghawi mentions how this practice of burying one’s infant daughter took place in his Tafseer (2/619): 
	When an Arab man would have a daughter, and he wanted to let her live, he would dress her in a robe made of wool or hair and would leave her in the desert for the camels and sheep to graze. If he wanted to kill her, he would wait until she was six years old and then say to her mother: 'Dress her up so that I can take her to marry her off.' He would dig a ditch for her in the desert, and when he reached the ditch with her, he would say: 'Go look into that well,' and then push her from behind into the well. He would then pour the dirt onto her head until the well was filled all the way up to the ground. That is what Allah alludes to when He says: 'Should he keep it in humiliation or bury it in the ground?' [16:59]

بسم اللہ، والصلاة والسلام على رسول اللہ، أما بعد:

پانچ دن پہلے، اللہ تعالی نے مجھے بیٹی سے نوازا۔ ہمارے گھر میں سب بہت خوش ہوئے الحمدللہ۔ یہ میری تیسری بیٹی ہے، کچھ چیزیں میں چاہتا ہوں کہ قلم بند کروں۔ جو آیت میں نے اس ریفلیکشن کے ساتھ لگائی ہے یہ ویسے تو زمانہ جاہلیت کے دور کی ہے، لیکن اس کے کچھ اثرات ابھی بھی باقی ہیں، کم سے کم برصغیر کے مسلمانوں میں۔ آج بھی جو حقیقی خوشی اور جو حقیقی مبارک لوگ بیٹوں کی دیتے ہیں، وہ بیٹیوں کی نہیں دیتے۔ آج بھی جو اِن بِٹوِین دَ لاینز میں، بیٹوں کو اہمیت دی جاتی ہے اور بیٹیوں کی پیدائش پر کہیں نہ کہیں افسوس کا اظہار کیا جاتا ہے، اس کا تعلق اسی آیت والی ذہنیت سے ہے۔

مثال کے طور پر ایک بہت پیاری دعا ہے 'اللہ اس کے نصیب اچھے کرے'، بےشک بہت اچھی دعا ہے، لیکن کم سے کم میں نے یہی دیکھا ہے کہ یہ صرف بیٹیوں کو دی جاتی ہے۔ بیٹے کیا اپنا نصیب خود لکھ کر لاتے ہیں؟ یہ بھی دیکھنے میں آیا ہے کہ کہا جاتا ہے کہ بیٹیوں کے نصیب سے ڈر لگتا ہے۔ تو آپ کو نصیب لکھنے والے سے زیادہ فکر ہے؟ میں اپنی تعریف نہیں کر رہا، لیکن جب میری اہلیہ نے مجھے ہمارے دو بہت قریبی رشتہ داروں کے کمنٹس کا بتایا کہ ایک نے کہا کہ مجھے تو بہت امید تھی کہ اس بار بیٹا ہوگا، اگر ہو جاتا تو  بیٹیوں کا مان بن جاتا۔ اور دوسری نے کہا کہ اللہ کے خزانے تو بہت بڑے ہیں، چاہتا تو بیٹا بھی دے دیتا، لیکن چلو اس کے ہر کام میں بہتری ہے۔ تو میں نے اپنی اہلیہ سے کہا کہ باقی کوئی معنی نہیں رکھتا، ہم نے ان سب چیزوں سے لاتعلق رہنا ہے اور اپنی بیٹیوں کا بھی ذہن ایسا بنانا ہے کہ وہ ان سب کو اہمیت نہ دیں اور ان سے لاتعلق رہیں۔ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کی چار بیٹیاں تھیں، اور سیرت نبوی میں آتا ہے کہ فاطمہ رضی اللہ عنہا جب آپ کے حضور آتی تھیں تو آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ان کے احترام میں کھڑے ہو جاتے تھے۔

بیٹے ہوں یا بیٹیاں، یہ معنی نہیں رکھتا، معنی یہ رکھتا ہے کہ آپ نے ان کی تربیت کیسے کی ہے۔ آجکل کی مادی دنیا میں بچوں کی تربیت ایک بہت بڑا چیلنج ہے۔ یہ میرے غیرمنظم خیالات تھے جو میں نے قلم بند کیے ہیں، یہ میرے اپنے لئے یاد دہانی ہیں۔ میں اور بھی بہت کچھ لکھنا چاہتا تھا لیکن ریفلیکشن لمبی ہو رہی ہے۔ ان دو دعاؤں کے ساتھ ختم کروں گا۔

رَبِّ اجْعَلْنِي مُقِيمَ الصَّلَاةِ وَمِن ذُرِّيَّتِي
'اے میرے رب! مجھے اور میری اولاد کو نماز قائم کرنے والا بنا۔'

رَبَّنَا هَبْ لَنَا مِنْ أَزْوَاجِنَا وَذُرِّيَّاتِنَا قُرَّةَ أَعْيُنٍ وَاجْعَلْنَا لِلْمُتَّقِينَ إِمَامًا
'اے ہمارے رب! ہمیں ہماری بیویوں اور اولاد سے آنکھوں کی ٹھنڈک عطا فرما اور ہمیں پرہیزگاروں کا امام بنا۔'

وَإِذَا ٱلْمَوْءُۥدَةُ سُئِلَتْ   
The Arabs back before the revelation used to do this evil act where they used to bury the young girls alive. If one of the men were told that their wife gave birth to a girl it would be like the worst moments of their life and they would feel ashamed for it. They felt their honour was lost ; as a result they would go and bury her alive in the desert. 

بِأَىِّ ذَنۢبٍ قُتِلَتْ 
Allah is saying that when the girl who was buried alive will be asked for what sin she was killed. Subhan’Allah! Allah is disregarding the ones committed this evil act by not asking them: Why did you kill the girl? One may ask that why Allah is not questioning the criminals here? Because at that time the person in charge of the girl was the father while the girl had no voice to speak for herself or defend herself or any power whatsoever. But on the day of judgement Allah will let the girl speak for herself when, Allah will ask her why were you slain? Then the girl will go on to narrate how brutally she was treated and buried alive. 

This is one of the powerful lessons in the Qur'an that one of the first things that will happen on the Day of  Judgement  after the chaos of Judgement Day is settled  is that;  the people who did not have a voice and  were powerless  will be empowered . Some of the scholars commented that its because these were the people who waited for justice all the time so they will  be the ones who will be dealt first. 

The other thing in these Aayahs is that it is as if Allah is showing the extent to which He is angry towards the killer by not even addressing him for the crime instead Allah is asking the girl why was she killed. This is a style in the Qur'an against those towards whom Allah is extremely angry. Subhan'Allah! 

For example when Allah s.w.t speaks about the Christians who had taken Isa (a.s) as the son of Allah . On the day of Judgement you don't find Allah scolding  the Christians instead you find a dialogue between Allah s.w.t and Isa (a.s). In Surah Al Ma'idah  : 

وَإِذْ قَالَ ٱللَّهُ يَـٰعِيسَى ٱبْنَ مَرْيَمَ ءَأَنتَ قُلْتَ لِلنَّاسِ ٱتَّخِذُونِى وَأُمِّىَ إِلَـٰهَيْنِ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ ۖ 
And when Allah said, '0 ` Isa son of Maryam, did you say to the people: Take me and my mother as gods beside Allah?' 5:116 

Although Allah already knows it! Allah alone has the full knowledge of everything. So this is  once again an illustration that the act of ascribing partners to Allah be it a son , daughter or other partners is so big a crime that  in the sight of Allah  the wrongdoers do not even deserve to  be asked concerning the matter!

'And when the buried child is asked, 'For what crime was she slain?'' 
(81:8-9)


And what is it with you? You do not fight in the cause of Allah and for oppressed men, women, and children who cry out, 'Our Lord! Deliver us from this land of oppressors! Appoint for us a saviour; appoint for us a helper—all by Your grace.' 
 (4 :75)

These verses are like two mirrors, reflecting the accountability we will face on the Day of Judgement.

You know, Judgement Day is also called the 'Day of Regret.'

This verse from Surah An-Nisa offers the action that can save us from being among those who regret. 

It clearly calls us to take a stand for the oppressed, and against oppression.

Agreed, most of us aren't in positions of power to change things.

But are we really that powerless??

When  we face  situations, circumstances, and moments of helplessness in our own lives– What do we do??

We do everything we can do about it.
We wake up for Tahajjud .
We offer Salah.
We give charity — because charity wards off harm.
We make sincere desperate duas.
We do something, anything.

And that answers what we should do for the oppressed when
we feel powerless, helpless and incapable of changing things.

Because we  can actually make a difference, through the same sincerity and same urgency.

We need to do for them, what we do for ourselves ,when our own lives fall apart.

And you know we wouldn't be doing it for them but for ourselves–to save our own necks.
To save our  own selves from regret and remorse when the accountability unfolds.

On that day, 
the oppressed would be given justice, compensated, and rewarded –regardless of  what we did or didn't for them.

And on that Day…
No excuse.
No answer.
No last-minute action will save us.

I saw a photo of a child buried under the rubble of a bombed building and remembered this Surah. On the day the child who was buried alive will be asked 'for what crime were you buried alive'. Interestingly, the current war on Palestine has been closely associated with the phrase 'misinformation' with every group and party accusing the other of misinformation. In the 10th ayah of this Surah, Allah SWT reminds' when the records of deeds are spread out'. Imagine that day the records of all these children buried alive is put out in the open and record of every person and their intention in relation to these children is put out in the open, and there are no lies or misinformation or false claims that day. What will the children say? What will the records read, I wonder. 
These children will not be able to bear witness on any stand or court today. They will be systematically erased from existence and history. However, on the Day of Judgement, it's the testimony of the baby that can not be suppressed. No wonder it's so hard to be a Muslim in this world. The Qur'an teaches us to be just to those who can not advocate for themselves in a world that thrives on injustices and power play. No wonder, the reward of being Muslim is Jannatun na'eem. May Allah SWT grant us all Jannatul Firdaus. Ameen

JazakAllah Khair sister for this heartfelt reflection!

'اور جب زندہ دفن کی گئی بچی سے پوچھا جائے گا،  
کہ کس گناہ پر اسے قتل کیا گیا؟'  
(التکویر ۸-۹)

'اور تمہیں کیا ہوگیا ہے کہ تم اللہ کی راہ میں،  
اور اُن کمزور مردوں، عورتوں اور بچوں کے لیے جنگ نہیں کرتے  
جو فریاد کرتے ہیں: 'اے ہمارے رب!  
ہمیں اس ظالم قوم سے نجات دے،  اور ہمارے لیے اپنی طرف سے کوئی مددگار اور نجات دہندہ مقرر فرما۔''
(النساء ۷۵)


یہ دو آیات دو آئینوں کی طرح ہیں—  
قیامت کے دن کے محاسبے کا عکس دکھاتی ہوئی۔

قیامت کا ایک نام 'یومِ حسرت' بھی ہے۔

اور سورہ نساء کی یہ آیت ہمیں ایک راستہ دیتی ہے…  
ایک عمل، جو ہمیں اس دن کی حسرت سے بچا سکتا ہے۔

یہ ہمیں صاف صاف ظلم کے خلاف کھڑے ہونے اور مظلوم کا ساتھ دینے کی دعوت دیتی ہے۔

مانا، ہم میں سے اکثر کے پاس طاقت یا اختیار نہیں کہ ہم دنیا بدل دیں…

لیکن کیا ہم واقعی اتنے بے بس ہیں؟

جب ہماری اپنی زندگی میں کوئی تکلیف، کوئی کرب،  
یا کوئی بےبسی کا لمحہ آتا ہے—  
تو ہم کیا کرتے ہیں؟

ہم جو کچھ کر سکتے ہیں، کرتے ہیں۔

تہجد کے لیے اٹھتے ہیں۔

نماز میں رو رو کر مانگتے ہیں۔

صدقہ دیتے ہیں— کیونکہ صدقہ بلاؤں کو ٹالتا ہے۔

سچے، بےقرار دل سے دعائیں کرتے ہیں۔

کچھ نہ کچھ، کوئی نہ کوئی قدم اٹھاتے ہیں۔

تو پھر جب ہم دوسروں کی بے بسی، مظلومیت،  
اور درد دیکھتے ہیں… اور کچھ کر نہیں سکتے—  
تو ہمیں وہی سب کچھ ان کے لیے بھی کرنا چاہیے۔

وہی اخلاص، وہی اضطرار، وہی کوشش۔

جو ہم اپنی بگڑتی زندگی سنوارنے کے لیے کرتے ہیں—  
وہی ہمیں ان کے لیے بھی کرنا ہوگا۔

کیونکہ یہ کام ہم دراصل اپنے لیے کر رہے ہوں گے—

اپنی نجات کے لیے،  
اپنے محاسبے کو آسان بنانے کے لیے،  
اس دن کی حسرت سے بچنے کے لیے۔

کیونکہ اس دن…  
مظلوم کو انصاف ضرور ملے گا۔  
اسے بدلہ بھی دیا جائے گا،  
اجر بھی،  
خواہ ہم نے کچھ کیا ہو یا نہ کیا ہو۔

لیکن ہمنے آج کچھ نہ کیا  تو ہمارا کیا بنے گا؟
اس وقت تو 
نہ کوئی عذر چلے گا،  
نہ کوئی جواب بنے گا،  
نہ  ہی کوئی   امل یا   کوشش ہی اس لمحے کی جایگی

إشعار بأنه لا ذنب لها فتقتل بسببه، بل الجرم على قاتلها؛ ولكن لعظم الجرم يتوجه السؤال إليها تبكيتًا لوائدها. الشنقيطي: 8/438.
