When I first read these verses, it made me think about the love and desire for all the possible tangible items that we could deem to be invaluable. For instance, money, clothes, jewelry, cars and the list is unlimited as there is endless materialism. I made a commitment with myself to not buy unnecessary items and neither keep hold of them for a prolonged period of time. To fulfill my commitment, it is important that I audit my items frequently. Similarly, food products that we buy have an expiry date, this is why we try not to use them beyond the specified date. As such, we should also have an expiry date for other valuables, so we do not hoard them for a significant timeframe before giving them to charity.

However, when I read these verses again — it made me think of the intangible items that we keep in our hearts such as the desires to acquire more of this دنيا and what it represents: unhealthy competition, holding on to beneficial knowledge, and not sharing it with others. I have also realised that the process of an audit should begin with the heart to clear it from the excessive impulse of acquiring wealth. One may find it easier to let go of tangible items once the heart is clear of the aforementioned desires.

To summarise, I would like to share the quote of Ibn-Qayyim (RA) 'When there is money in your hand and not in your heart, it will not harm you even if it is a lot; and when it is in your heart, it will harm you even if there is none in your hands.'

Falling in love with this dunya will only destroy your Imaan because this world is full of haram, especially in the West. Do not fall in love with what is pleasing to the eyes but, use this world in preparation for the afterlife. Are you ready to meet your lord?

I found it beautiful how horses show up in both Surat al-adiyat and Surat sad, even though they’re talking about different people. In both places, horses represent a deep love for worldly things, not just owning them but being emotionally attached to them. The Quran even uses similar wording (mutashabihat) about hubb al-khayr, which made me look at these verses alongside each other. In al-Adiyat, humans are criticized for being obsessed with dunya, while in Surat sad, Sulayman realizes that even something halal and beautiful can distract the heart from Allah. The Quran uses the same symbol in two totally different stories to show the same spiritual struggle. It makes you realize that the real test isn’t the dunya itself, but what you let your heart cling to.
And it made me think about how influential “Horses” (today’s world cars, brands, clothes, degrees) can be and how much they are capable of sucking you away.

There is a kind of love that kills—the love of wealth that makes the hand tremble, the heart hardened, the soul restless. We gather, we hoard, as if we can outlast time. But all of it—every coin, every possession—will one day slip through our fingers like dust. The earth will one day return its trust; graves will open, and what we buried—bodies and secrets alike—will rise. The thoughts we never voiced, the desires we tucked away in silence, the truths we dared not confront—they will stand beside us, known and seen. On that Day, nothing will be hidden from the One who knows the folds of our hearts better than we do. It humbles me to remember: the real measure will not be what I owned, but what I chose—what I loved, what I gave, what I became. So I remind myself gently: seek not permanence in what was never meant to last. Anchor your hope in what endures. The Hereafter isn’t far—it’s closer with every breath. And Allah, in His perfect justice, never forgets, never wrongs, never overlooks.

Everytime I would recite this surah I would remember my childhood that this was the first time I got smacked by my teacher for making a mistake. At the time I had so many negative thoughts but it was a wake up call, and I started to take my studies a bit more seriously. In my defense the verses are too similar and it's easy to mistake one for the other.  But I dwelled on this for so long, even after I graduated.  I even associated that memory with this surah. Not ever looking into the meaning.  

But long after a brother once reflected what he heard from the jumah khutbah about surah aadiyaat, and it changed the way I looked at it. 

How horses are so loyal to man, man takes care of his horses and thereafter the horses are willing to sacrifice their lives by running into battle carrying their masters. Then how ungrateful is man himself that Allah does so much more for him, yet he finds it troubling to obey his Lord's simplest commands.

If that brother never shared this reflection, I woulda still dwelled on the negative thought , moreover how can we dwell on the negative thoughts when Allah has given us so much that we can not count them.

Subhan Allah Wal hamdu lillah.

"Horses breathing heavy as they race ahead. Sparks flying under their feet as they strike the ground at rapid speeds. Charging forward at first dawn. Stirring dust with their incredible energy. Penetrating deep into enemy lines with their fearlessness."

We aren't told when they started running - because a believer tends to blur the lines between one good deed's end and another's beginning. They transition smoothly, and plan their lives intentionally. They "race to goodness" (Surat al-Mu'minūn) as Allah describes their prophets in the Qur'an. They are keen to minimize the time wasted in their life. They understand that greatness is found in the gaps, and that distinction requires determination. It's what over the years separates them from the rest. They worked when others rested. They finished a prayer and read Qur'an while waiting for the next prayer. They fasted Ramadan and followed up with 6 days in Shawwal. They volunteered when others vacationed. They "finished the task at hand, then exhaust themselves with another." (Surat al-Sharḥ)

This is a really thoughtful reflection, and what stood out to me most is how naturally you connect the imagery of momentum with lived faith.  May Allah make us of those who race to goodness. Amen
