1. This is a brief introduction to the Surah which only stresses the point that the Quran is not Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) word, as the disbelievers assert, but it is Allah’s Word, which He Himself has sent down. Along with this, two of Allah's attributes have been mentioned to warn the listeners of two realities so that they do not underestimate this Word but understand its full importance: (1) That Allah Who has sent it down, is All-Mighty; that is, He is so powerful that no power can prevent His will and decisions from being enforced and none can dare resist Him in any way. (2) That He is All-wise; that is, the guidance He is giving in this Book, is wholly based on wisdom, and only an ignorant and foolish person can turn away from it. الكلام وصف للمتكلم، والوصف يتبع الموصوف، فكما أن الله تعالى الكامل من كل وجه، الذي لا مثيل له، فكذلك كلامه كامل من كل وجه، لا مثيل له، فهذا وحده كافٍ في وصف القرآن، دال على مرتبته. السعدي:718.

In surah Az-Zumar, Allah addresses the human beings who have not just done wrong but have 'transgressed' against themselves. 
What amazes me is the way He calls these people. He says, ' يَٰعِبَادِىَ - My slaves'. Just this word- يَٰعِبَادِىَ  melts my heart. This word is full of love, care and compassion. After doing wrong, people or society and sometime we disown ourselves or runaway. But this ayah show that no matter how badly I mess up, Allah is and has always been with me. 
I can never begin to encompass how much He loves me. Even after doing extreme form of evil He still calls My slave-He does not disown me, He does not abandon me. No matter what happens always remember Allah is with you because the first relationship you and I have with our Rabb is that of love and Rahma. We should all renew this concept of the limitless love Allah gives us every second in every Salah when we say 'ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ'.

I remember when I went for my Youth Service Corps program as a fresh graduate in Nigeria. I was posted to an Islamic school. I have always been a Muslim, but I couldn't call myself a consistent practicing one as of then. The way the students and teachers acted changed something in me. 

They prayed at the right time; the female teachers covered themselves from head to toe, and the men dressed according to the Prophet's instructions. Everything was absolutely beautiful.

Then, I started looking inward. Why did I commit so many sins? Why was I too immersed in the Dunya? I really broke down, as I felt lost and ashamed of the life I had lived.

Seeing their lifestyle in that school, I also decided to become a better person. I sewed new clothes that aligned with the Islamic belief for ladies and also began observing my five daily prayers, but something always told me Allah wouldn't forgive me, for I had sinned a lot. 

To reduce my depression, I started reading the Quran translations. One day, I stumbled upon Surah Az-Zumar. When I got to the verse 53, I felt a sense of hope. I thought to myself, 'You were wrong to think Allah would never forgive you. You were really wrong.'

That verse made me feel like a burden was lifted off me. Praise be to Allah, for He is kind and merciful. Praise be to Allah who knows every bad (and good) thing you do and still gives you the grace to come back seeking forgiveness.


I reflected on that verse for a while, and honestly, I can't understand that kind of mercy. It's beyond me. However, it gave me so much hope, and I would say that verse is one of the most optimistic verses in the Holy Quran.

My fellow brothers and sisters! Allah Himself has let us know He is ready to accept us back after our sins with open arms. Then, why should we be ashamed to run back to Him? I hope this gives someone the slightest hope that our Lord is Kind and ready to forgive us as long as we seek repentance. 

May Allah (SWT) forgive us all and count us among the people of Paradise. Ameen!

۞ قُلْ يَـٰعِبَادِىَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَسْرَفُوا۟ عَلَىٰٓ أَنفُسِهِمْ لَا تَقْنَطُوا۟ مِن رَّحْمَةِ ٱللَّهِ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَغْفِرُ ٱلذُّنُوبَ جَمِيعًا ۚ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلْغَفُورُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ ٥٣

Say, ˹O Prophet, that Allah says,˺ 'O My servants who have trangressed against their souls! Do not lose hope in Allah’s mercy, for Allah certainly forgives all sins. He is indeed the All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
