<p>Salah is not only an obligation but also the very means through which Allah has prescribed remembrance upon the believers. To illustrate the lofty position of salah, it was on the sacred mountaintop of Ṭūr that Allah commanded Musa (AS), saying:</p>
<p><em>&quot;Indeed, I am Allah! There is no god ˹worthy of worship˺ except Me. So worship Me ˹alone˺, and establish prayer for My remembrance.&quot;</em> (Quran, Ṭā Hā: 14)</p>
<p>It is also a reminder that just as Musa (AS) had the privilege of communicating with Allah, Allah is reminding all believers that while we may not get to communicate with Him in the same manner, we still have the immense privilege of speaking to Allah directly in our salah. Every moment and place of prostration, in this sense, carries a sacred touch.</p>
<p>As for the Prophet Muḥammad (peace be upon him), while he received many commands and injunctions throughout his noble life, salah was, in fact, prescribed in the heavens during his ascension (Miʿrāj), once again highlighting that salah is an act of heavenly virtue.</p>
<p>The moments we spend in salah should be the most precious moments of our day, as we draw near to our Creator, beseeching Him, glorifying Him, and acknowledging His boundless blessings upon us. Given the centrality and virtue of salah in our lives, Allah commands us to “safeguard” it. This is a striking word choice, as it conveys the idea that a believer is protecting something immensely valuable, just as one would protect their children or financial assets.</p>
<p>Allah says in the Quran:</p>
<p><em>&quot;Guard strictly the prayers, especially the middle prayer, and stand before Allah with devotion.&quot;</em> <strong>(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:238)</strong></p>
<p>This command reflects the immense spiritual weight of salah in the life of a believer, worthy of vigilance, priority, and reverence. One of the ways we can guard our salah is by ensuring that we pray on time.</p>
<p>Islam places great emphasis on punctuality in prayer, not only as an obligation but as a marker of true devotion. Allah clearly states in Surah An-Nisa that prayer has been ordained for believers at set times. This alone teaches us that Salah is not meant to fit into our schedules but to shape our schedules. This divine appointment is not arbitrary; it is a discipline of the soul and a structure for our day.</p>
<p>The verses from Surah Al-Mu’minun take this even deeper. It tells us that true success lies in being among &quot;those who humble themselves in prayer – a sign of <em>khushu’</em> (focused humility). This shows that both timeliness and presence in prayer are signs of sincere belief. It’s not only <em>when</em> we pray, but <em>how</em> we pray that determines our closeness to Allah.</p>
<p>Surah Al-Baqarah (2:45) reminds us that prayer is a source of strength, and those with a humble heart – those who truly submit to Allah – can find help and healing through salah. This verse reassures us that finding focus and meaning in prayer is a process that begins with humility and patience.</p>

The Quran warns of severe consequences for those who are heedless of their prayers, indicating a deeper issue of disregard for one's relationship with the Creator.</p>
<p>Surah Al-Ma’un makes it clear: performing prayer without mindfulness or punctuality is not enough. Allah calls out those who are &quot;unmindful&quot; of their prayers, those who perform it heedlessly, without heart, and without care. Their actions may outwardly resemble worship, but inwardly, they lack sincerity and discipline.</p>
<p>Imam Al-Alusi explains in Ruh al-Ma‘ani: “They are heedless and indifferent to it (prayer), either missing its time entirely or rushing through it like a bird pecking at the ground, their thoughts wandering throughout the valleys of dunya.” This highlights how external negligence often mirrors inner distraction (Tafsir Ruh Al-Ma'ani (107:4)</p>

<p>Our minds are often full of responsibilities, relationships, worries, and distractions. These thoughts don’t always pause just because we begin to pray. The Quran acknowledges that a distracted heart is not new. Surah An-Nisa (4:43) was revealed in the early period of Islam, (prior to the prohibition of alcohol), reminding believers not to enter prayer while intoxicated so they could <em>understand what they were saying</em>. Though the context was about intoxication, the deeper meaning remains relevant: to avoid being distracted in our salah and to guard our Khushu in salah. In this sense, we must ensure that our motions and emotions are in full submission before our Creator.</p>
<p>Distraction in prayer often comes from a cluttered heart and unfocused mind. That’s why the Quran emphasizes sincerity and balance in worship, as seen in Surah Al-A’raf (7:29). We are told to stand before Allah in devotion and call upon Him with sincerity. This is the spiritual opposite of absentmindedness: being intentional with body, mind and heart.</p>
<p>What pulls us away during prayer? It can be external noise, inner worries, or even the whisperings of Shaytan. The key is not to despair, but to gently and repeatedly bring the heart back. Presence and humility in salah is not a switch; it is a state which needs to be continuously  fostered. To reach this state of <em>khushu’</em> we are in need of mindfulness, patience, and consistency.</p>

<p>The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said “... Satan whispers into the heart of the person (to divert his attention from his prayer) and makes him remember things which he does not recall to his mind before the prayer and that causes him to forget how much he has prayed.&quot;

It begins with preparation before salah, making a calm, deliberate wudu, choosing a quiet place, and reminding yourself that you are about to speak with the King of kings. It deepens during prayer through reflection on the words you recite and stillness in body. And it continues after the prayer, as you reflect on what passed between you and your Lord.</p>

<p>We were entrusted with the task of tending the camels. On my turn when I came back in the evening after grazing them in the pastures, I found Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) standing and addressing the people. I heard these words of his: If any Muslim performs ablution well, then stands and prays two rak'ahs setting about them with his heart as well as his face, Paradise would be guaranteed to him.”

<p>In Surah Ta-Ha (20:14), Allah Himself commands: <em>Establish prayer for My remembrance.</em> This shifts our mindset.
