Surah Quraysh: Gratitude for Allah’s Everyday Blessings

Surah Quraysh is a short but deeply reflective chapter that teaches believers how to see the world through the lens of gratitude.

The surah reminds the people of Quraysh of the blessings they had become accustomed to: safety, provision, stability, and ease. Then it gently redirects their attention to the One who made those blessings possible.

Surah Quraysh reminds Quraysh of the great protection and favor Allah granted them through the incident of the Elephant. By preventing the invading army from attacking Makkah, Allah preserved Quraysh’s homes, security, status, and livelihood, allowing them to become established and respected through their connection with the Sacred House. This blessing was intended to lead them to recognize Allah’s power, be grateful, worship Him, rely upon Him, and understand that He raises whom He wills and humbles whom He wills. The name “Quraysh” is also connected to the idea of acquiring and gathering wealth and is likened, in one interpretation, to the powerful sea creature that dominates what surrounds it.

This message remains just as relevant today. Many of Allah’s greatest favors become invisible through familiarity. We enjoy them daily, yet rarely pause to recognize them or thank the One who provides them.
