For instance, money, clothes, jewelry, cars and the list is unlimited as there is endless materialism. I made a commitment with myself to not buy unnecessary items and neither keep hold of them for a prolonged period of time. I found it beautiful how horses show up in both Surat al-adiyat and Surat sad, even though they’re talking about different people. In both places, horses represent a deep love for worldly things, not just owning them but being emotionally attached to them. The Quran even uses similar wording (mutashabihat) about hubb al-khayr, which made me look at these verses alongside each other. At the time I had so many negative thoughts but it was a wake up call, and I started to take my studies a bit more seriously.
