Sura An-Náml

Aleyas:

93

Lugar de revelación:

La Meca

Adapted from Tafsir Ibn Ashur

Themes and purpose:

This Makkan surah asserts the Quran's divine authority by contrasting two forms of power: the magnificent, prophet-led kingdom of Sulaymān (which included control over birds and ants) and the arrogant, destroyed civilization of Thamūd. It details Sulaymān's story to prove Monotheism and the Resurrection, and the truthfulness of the Prophet (ﷺ) to the disbelievers. It also presents the Quran as guardian over earlier scriptures and concludes by commanding the Prophet (ﷺ) to persist in conveying the message.

Context of Revelation:

Era: Makkan by unanimous agreement.

Chronology: It has been counted as the 48th surah in the order of revelation, revealed after Sūrat al-Shuʿarā’ and before al-Qaṣaṣ.

Context: The detailed account of Solomon's dominion and the wealth of the Queen of Sheba served to challenge the Makkans' material arrogance and hinted that the final message would also be accompanied by political authority (the future Caliphate).

Name and Ayah Count:

Name: Its most famous name is "Sūrat al-Naml" (The Ant). It has also been called "Sūrat al-Hudhud" (The Hoopoe), because it is the only surah in the Quran that mentions each of these animals. It is also called "Sūrat Sulaymān"  because Solomon’s magnificent kingdom is detailed here more extensively than elsewhere.

Ayah Count: 94 ayahs (Kūfah/Shām/Baṣrah) or 95 (Makkah/Madīnah).

Surah Overview:

  • Affirming the Quran’s divine origin, praise for its guidance, and hinting at its inimitability through the opening letters, and challenging the deniers by the reports it contains (beginning with Moses). [1–14]
  • Using the kingdom of Dāwūd and Sulaymān as an object of reflection on prophethood, power, and high civilization. [15-17]
  • Detailing Sulaymān’s extraordinary knowledge—his understanding of the Ant and the Hoopoe—and the story of the Arab kingdom of Saba and its queen, hinting that Muḥammad’s (ﷺ) mission and Sharīʿah will likewise establish an enduring polity and kingdom for the Muslim Ummah as Sulaymān’s kingdom was established for Banī Isrāʾīl. [18–44]
  • Warning deniers with the story of Thamūd, the most famously powerful ancient Arab nation. [45-53]
  • Proving Monotheism and refuting the polytheists’ false beliefs, including the collapse of their claims to the unseen (soothsayers, etc.). [59-65]
  • Proving the Resurrection and detailing the horrors and signs of the Last Hour. [66-75, 82-90]
  • Stating that the Quran is guardian over previous scriptures by clarifying for the Israelites much of what they dispute, and reaffirming it as guidance and mercy for believers. [76–79]
  • Commanding the Prophet (ﷺ) to continue conveying the Quran, assuring him that Allah observes their actions, and that they will witness the signs of truth. [91–93]
He has revealed to you ˹O Prophet˺ the Book in truth, confirming what came before it, as He revealed the Torah and the Gospel
