قال يا ابليس ما منعك ان تسجد لما خلقت بيدي استكبرت ام كنت من العالين ٧٥
قَالَ يَـٰٓإِبْلِيسُ مَا مَنَعَكَ أَن تَسْجُدَ لِمَا خَلَقْتُ بِيَدَىَّ ۖ أَسْتَكْبَرْتَ أَمْ كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلْعَالِينَ ٧٥
قَالَ
يَٰٓإِبۡلِيسُ
مَا
مَنَعَكَ
أَن
تَسۡجُدَ
لِمَا
خَلَقۡتُ
بِيَدَيَّۖ
أَسۡتَكۡبَرۡتَ
أَمۡ
كُنتَ
مِنَ
ٱلۡعَالِينَ
٧٥
Allah asked, “O Iblîs! What prevented you from prostrating to what I created with My Own Hands? Did you ˹just˺ become proud? Or have you always been arrogant?”

The word (ما) carries different meanings Arabic depending on the context it is used, but many times it can be used to mean 'that which' and would apply to both animates and the inanimate. وهذا تقريع من الله للمشركين الذين كفروا بمحمد -صلى الله عليه وسلم-... استكبارًا عن أن يكونوا تبعًا لرجل منهم حين قالوا: ﴿أَءُنزِلَ عَلَيۡهِ ٱلذِّكۡرُ مِنۢ بَيۡنِنَا﴾ [ص: 8]، و﴿هَلۡ هَٰذَآ إِلَّا بَشَرٞ مِّثۡلُكُمۡ﴾ [الأنبياء: 3]؛ فقص عليهم تعالى قصة إبليس وإهلاكه باستكباره عن السجود لآدم بدعواه أنه خير منه. الطبري:21/239.
