Al-Qari'ah الْقَارِعَة comes from Qara'a قرع, which means to strike in such a way that its sound causes panic in the mind. For example, someone comes at night and knocks on the door. You are terrified, did the police come? This type of strike is qara'a, which creates panic in the human mind. Qariyah is the ultimate form of Qara'ah - a terrible strike, which causes panic in the mind. A strike that breaks and destroys everything.
