Imām Ibn al-Jawzī (d. 597/1201) summarized the scholars' opinions in his book "Zād al-Masīr" as follows:

1. Most scholars of *tafsīr* consider this verse to be abrogated. Ibn Masʿūd said: "The verse of *zakāt* abrogated it." 
2. However, al-Ḥasan viewed the verse as still applicable, and Ibn Zayd said it refers to voluntary spending. Ibn al-Jawzī: this is apparent from the verse since it indicates encouragement, and it would not be valid to claim it is abrogated unless it implied an obligation to spend on the people mentioned.

The Prophet said: "Spend them on your relatives." The man said, "I have six." The Prophet replied: "Spend them in the way of Allah, which is the best of them." So, this verse was revealed.
