<p>Every second of our lives is precious. It is a unique blessing and ultimately part of our test when it comes to what we do with it. Time, like wealth, is a trust (<em>amanah</em>), and in the age of screens, we’re often spending it carelessly, even while claiming to be “busy”. We scroll for hours, jumping from video to video with endless reels designed to preoccupy us unnecessarily, only to wonder why our hearts feel empty and our day feels wasted. The days seem shorter as the barakah seeps away from our lives, like water dissipating in a leaking bucket. It is now time to secure the time Allah has given us, using this blessing to invest in ways that will be most productive and beneficial to us in this life and the next. Our predecessors accomplished so much more in the same 24-hour day, whilst we often find ourselves lost in the distraction of our own making.</p>
<p>Surah Al-‘Asr, the surah aptly named ‘Time/ The Declining Day’, lays out the conditions of success: belief, righteous actions, truth, and patience. None of this happens passively or by accident or in a vacuum. It happens in our world, where time is the fifth dimension, constantly moving forward and carrying us with it. But it must be guarded and used with intention. The clock is not just ticking; it’s testifying.</p>
<p>This is not a call to abandon technology but to reclaim your soul from it and hopefully put it in its rightful place as a tool, and not a ritual. While many of us rely on screens for our work or daily tasks, at times we may find ourselves switching from purposeful engagement to time-consuming entertainment.</p>
<p>Islam calls us to be prudent with our time and to have a higher standard of accountability and to always be mindful of Allah. Constant screen use erodes our value of time and threatens our relationship with Allah and our families, friends and community. It scatters our attention and dims the heart’s awareness. It puts us at risk of becoming heedless to our main purpose in life.</p>
<p>The first step to healing is realizing the cost. Every moment distracted is a moment disconnected. And the longer we drift, the more our hearts forget what they were created for.</p>
<h3><strong>Hadith</strong></h3>
<p>The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:</p>
<p>“There are two blessings that many people are deceived into losing: health and free time...” (Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 6412)</p>

The Digital Drowning

<h3><strong>Lesson &amp; Reflection</strong></h3>
<p>We live in an age where screens consume not just our time but also our hearts, focus, and sense of presence. The phone has become a constant companion, oftentimes more than people, more than prayer, more than our true purpose as being servants of the Most Merciful. The scroll never ends, and sadly, neither does the subtle erosion of our attention, relationships, and remembrance of Allah. Every moment is an investment or a debt, the rewards of which we will find with our Lord, or a debt that we will be held accountable for, therefore we must choose how we spend our time wisely and with purpose.</p>
<p>In Surah Al-Mulk (67:23), Allah reminds us that He is the One who brought us into existence and gave us our senses, including our ears, eyes, and intellect, yet the reality is, many are heedless and ungrateful for these priceless blessings. Showing gratitude to our Creator is not simply through lip service, but by using these blessings in a manner that reflects true thankfulness. Exposing our senses to beneficial content, such as the recitation of the Quran or the pursuit of beneficial knowledge, is a form of gratitude. Conversely, exploiting our senses to fulfill vain desires, or engaging in excessive entertainment not only is time-consuming scrolling, but a betrayal of the trust He has placed in us. True shukr (gratitude) is expressed through conscious, purposeful use of what we've been given, aligning our actions with the purpose for which these gifts were created.</p>
<p>Surah Al-Baqarah warns against self-destruction. Wasting time isn’t neutral. It erodes your soul, distances you from Allah, and feeds distraction. Time lost cannot be recovered. Goodness, on the other hand, is effort directed with purpose, whether in remembering Allah, serving others, seeking knowledge, or even resting with intention. A righteous intention before a given engagement, even if mundane, is time well spent.</p>
<p>You will be asked how you spent your youth, your health, and your free time. Screen addiction often hides under “just one more video”. But every moment is either taking you closer to Allah or further.</p>
<h3><strong>Hadith</strong></h3>
<p>The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:</p>
<p>“The feet of the slave of Allah shall not move [on the Day of Judgement] until he is asked about five things: about his life and what he did with it, about his knowledge and what he did with it, about his wealth and how he earned it and where he spent it, about his body and for what did he wear it out.” (Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi, Hadith 2417)</p>
<p>The common factor in all these elements mentioned in this hadith is time –how did you spend your time? Life is but moments of time, knowledge takes time to acquire and share, and so does our wealth. While the toiling of the body is an exchange of time. Time is an unseen currency that we continuously exchange for benefits in this world. But the best exchange is that which is made with the akhirah in mind.</p>

<p>In the same way, knowing that I will be asked about how I spend my entire days in my life, how does this affect my routine and how will this now impact the way I spend my time?</p>

Time is a Trust

<h3><strong>Lesson &amp; Reflection</strong></h3>
<p>What we expose our senses to, what we see, hear, and dwell on, does not just pass through us. It shapes us. Screens have become gateways to everything: beneficial knowledge, but also temptation, comparison, envy, waste, and sin. Our senses have been given to us as a blessing, and so we should direct these to serve the purpose of our existence, which is to worship Allah.</p>
<p>In Surah Al-Isra (17:36), Allah reminds us: we will be questioned about our senses. What we chose to watch, hear, and give our hearts to. And in Surah Al-Munafiqun (63:9), He warns us not to let anything, not even blessings, distract us from His remembrance. Today, the most common diversion is digital: screens that replace connection, numb the soul, and delay everything that matters. Screens can be a blessing when used productively and moderately, but when we resort to it excessively, it can be counterproductive to our health and well being and leave us feeling spiritually hollow. The Prophet (peace be upon him) advised: “Strive to seek that which will benefit you” (Sunan Ibn Majah 4168).</p>
<p>Allah warns us that the eyes, ears, and heart are blessings which we will be questioned about and how we use them. Are we being accountable with every scroll? What are we letting in? What are we allowing our hearts to absorb? What are we feeding our souls? History has shown us that continuous consumption of an idea, no matter how vile it may be,  brings about acceptance and normalization of that idea with time. The <em>fitrah</em> (the inner disposition) that was once pure can easily be corrupted by relentless bombardment of corrupt ideas. Endless scrolling is perhaps one of the most acceptable forms of distraction in our times and perhaps the most destructive of all.</p>
<p>In Surah An-Nur (24:30), Allah commands believing men (and women in the subsequent verse) to lower their gaze, not just from indecency, but from anything that pollutes the soul. Not every trending post, story, or visual needs our view. Protecting the eyes isn’t just about avoiding sin; it’s about guarding the heart. A vessel that harbors the love of Allah. And this love cannot co-exist with the love of frivolous desires.</p>
<p>Every moment of exposure either softens or hardens the soul. <em>Ihsan</em> in screen use, means being deliberate: looking with purpose, listening with care, and preserving the heart’s purity. Don’t let your screen train your soul to become numb. Use your blessings wisely, from your senses to your screens, ask yourself, has this brought me closer to my Creator, salah and fulfilling my obligations as a Muslim or has this distanced me from these?</p>

<p>“Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, &quot;If any one of you looked at a person who was made superior to him in property and (in good) appearance, then he should also look at the one who is inferior to him.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 6490; Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2963)</p>
<p>This wisdom applies powerfully to social media and digital comparison and serves as a timeless reminder that there are people who do not have this privilege of screen time. We should be grateful for our blessings and not misuse them.</p>

Protecting the Eyes, Ears, and Heart

<p>Islam is a religion of balance. It neither promotes deprivation of appropriate leisure nor unrestrained indulgence. In every aspect of life, including screen use, the Sunnah encourages moderation. But today, we are surrounded by extremes: hours lost in content, stimulation overload, and a constant craving for digital distraction.</p>
<p>Surah Al-Baqarah calls this Ummah a “moderate nation”. The word used (<em>wasatan</em>) is not just about fairness but about middle-ground living. It means making room for work, rest, reflection, and interaction without losing the soul to any one pursuit. If you feel that your current lifestyle is causing you to over indulge, such as over consumption of social media, over reliance on entertainment to regulate your emotions, then take a step back and engage in reflection of the Quran and its recitation. Speak to a close righteous friend and seek their advice on how to regain that balance. Ultimately the dua you make to Allah will benefit you in this regard.</p>
<p>Surah An-Nisa (4:171) – even though it primarily addresses the people of the book, it indirectly warns us against extremism, even in worship. If going too far in something spiritual is discouraged, how much more caution should we show with something worldly and addictive?</p>
<p>A balanced Muslim knows when to unplug. Knows when enough is enough. The Sunnah teaches us to be conscious of how we spend time, energy, and attention. Screens have a place, but they should not have our hearts. We need to become users of technology, not slaves to it.</p>

Seeking Balance

<p>You were not created to live on autopilot. You were not designed to be tethered to a device, endlessly scrolling, chasing, and consuming. You were created for something higher: for remembrance, for worship, for beauty, and to be in constant gratitude. The screen may be a tool, but it must never become the center of your life.</p>
<p>Surah Al-An'am (6:162) reframes life itself as an act of devotion. When you eat, speak, move, and choose–do it as a servant of Allah. That includes how you use your devices. Surah Aal-Imran (3:41) reminds us to fill our time with remembrance, not just occasionally, but consistently, morning and evening.</p>
<p>Living purposefully in a screen-heavy world means bringing Allah into your scroll, your schedule, and your stillness. Keeping a check on your screen habits not for guilt, but for growth. It means moving away from spiritual abandonment to spiritual awakening. It means asking: <em>Is this helping me live as someone on the way to Allah or distracting me from Him?</em></p>
<p>You don’t need to delete everything. You don’t need to live a life of reclusion. You just need to realign. Guard your time. Use your attention wisely. Let your screen reflect your values, not override them. Let your life speak of <em>dhikr</em>, not just data.</p>
<p>Finally, you can check your phone and review the analytics and date to inform you of how much time you are spending on what applications. Take note of the things that steal your time away from the vast blessings around you. Is it worth missing out on life, discovery, real human interaction for the sake of a 5-inch screen? Remember through dua, accountability and mindfulness of Allah, you can restart your lifestyle again to overcome any bad screen habits. Replace the applications that distract you for more educational ones, and ultimately put the screen away when and whenever possible. With Allah’s permission, this shift can renew your spirit, reclaim your time, and realign your heart with your true purpose: Submission to Allah</p>
