The Weight We Were Never Meant to Carry

Prophet Musa (peace be upon him) stood trapped between an army and the water. Behind him was Pharaoh’s rage; before him, an impossible sea. The people around him panicked, convinced it was over. But Musa remained calm, steady, and full of trust, saying, “Absolutely not! My Lord is certainly with me—He will guide me.” (Quran 26:62)That statement changed everything. Musa walked forward, striking the water with faith before seeing any sign of safety. This is the essence of tawakkul: moving with trust before you see the outcome.Allah commanded Musa to strike the sea, even though He could have split it without that action. Why? Perhaps so that we might see how help comes after obedience and trust, not before. Tawakkul means walking forward even when the path seems impossible. In our lives, we face our own “Red Seas”. Situations that seem impossible: a job loss, a diagnosis, a broken relationship, an overwhelming fear. And in those moments of fear, Allah reminds us, as He reminded Musa, that deliverance begins when we place our trust in Him and step forward with Him. True trust is not believing Allah will make life easy; it’s believing He will guide you through what is hard. The sea may not split instantly, but when you keep your eyes on Allah instead of the waves, you’ll always find a way through.The story of Musa reminds us that Allah’s timing is perfect, even when ours runs out. Sometimes He waits until the last moment, not to test our patience, but to strengthen our faith.Takeaway: The sea doesn’t split for those who stand still; it splits for those who move with trust in Allah.<h3>Hadith</h3>The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:“Whoever is focused only on this world, Allah will confound his affairs and make him fear poverty constantly, and he will not get anything of this world except that which has been decreed for him. Whoever is focused on the Hereafter, Allah will settle his affairs for him and make him feel content with his lot, and his provision and worldly gains will undoubtedly come to him.” (Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 4105)&nbsp;This hadith reminds us to rely on Allah and to direct our focus on seeking His aid and assistance, knowing full well that Allah provides.&nbsp; So we ought to balance our worldly concerns with our longing for the hereafter. It serves as a stark warning that when our focus is purely on the material world, we will face distress and only gain what was already pre-ordained. The hadith teaches us to focus our attention on the hereafter whilst having full trust in Allah that He will take care of us here and now and ultimately in the hereafter as well.<h3>Practical Activity</h3>Action: Identify one area of your life where fear has made you hesitate. Take one small, concrete step forward today, then hand the outcome entirely to Allah. Say: “My Lord is with me; He will guide me.”Why it helps:<ul><li>It shifts focus from fear to faith-based action.</li><li>It strengthens spiritual courage and resilience.</li><li>It reinforces that trust is built through movement, not stagnation. </li></ul><h3>Dua</h3><h2>اللَّهُمَّ اكْفِنِي بِحَلالِكَ عَنْ حَرَامِكَ، وَأَغْنِنِي بِفَضْلِكَ عَمَّنْ سِوَاكَ</h2>Allahumma kfini bi-halalika ‘an haramika, wa aghnini bi-fadlika ‘amman siwak O Allah, suffice me with what You have made lawful instead of what You have forbidden, and make me independent of all others besides You. When the Sea Splits

What if the doors close?But Allah tells us plainly: “There is no moving creature on earth whose provision is not guaranteed by Allah.” Before we ever worried, He had already written what would reach us, when, and how. Worry doesn’t change the decree; it only weakens the heart.Consider Maryam (Mary), alone and in labor under the palm tree. In her pain, she cried, “Alas! I wish I had died before this.” Yet at that moment of despair, Allah called out: “Do not grieve! Your Lord has provided a stream at your feet.” (Quran 19:23–24). Her sustenance was not visible until she reached the point of surrender. Allah’s provision was already waiting, just unseen.Provision (rizq) is not limited to money. It includes peace, companionship, guidance, and strength. Some people have wealth but no tranquility; others have little yet sleep in contentment. True rizq is what nourishes the soul as much as the body.We mentioned this Hadith before, where the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “If you were to rely on Allah as He truly deserves, He would provide for you as He provides for the birds—they go out hungry in the morning and return full in the evening.” (Sunan al-Tirmidhi 2344). Notice: the birds still leave their nests. They don’t sit idle; they move with hope. They are not wondering, ‘What if I go out and fail?’ They trust that if they look, they shall find.Fear of the future often paralyzes us because we confuse our effort with our control. We are commanded to tie the camel, not to make the rain fall. Once you’ve done your part, release the outcome. What’s written for you will never miss you, and what misses you was never yours.Takeaway: Your provision was written before you were born. Trust frees you from chasing what’s already guaranteed.<h3>Hadith</h3>“No soul will die until it has received its provision in full, even if it is slow in coming. So fear Allah and seek provision in a good way.” (Sunan Ibn Majah 2144) <h3>Practical Activity</h3>Action: When you feel anxious about money, opportunities, or the future, recite: “It is from Allah. Surely Allah provides for whoever He wills without limit.” (Quran 3:37) Then write down one blessing you already have today that money couldn’t buy.Why it helps:<ul><li>It re-centers gratitude over scarcity.</li><li>It trains the heart to focus on abundance, not fear.</li><li>It reminds you that rizq flows from Allah, not effort alone.</li></ul><h3>Dua</h3><h2>اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْماً نَافِعاً، وَرِزْقاً طَيِّباً، وَعَمَلاً مُتَقَبَّلاً&nbsp;</h2>Allāhumma innī as'aluka `ilman naafi`a, wa rizqan ṭayyiba, wa `amalan mutaqabbala.O Allah, I ask You for knowledge that is of benefit, a good provision, and deeds that will be accepted. Provision Is Written

True tawakkul is not only about expecting good; it’s about trusting that even what hurts is part of that good.We live in a culture that teaches control: control your future, your image, your success, your emotions, control everything. But control is an illusion that drains the soul. The believer’s peace comes from surrender, not dominance. We are Muslimoon by definition – a people of surrender and submission. When Prophet Ya‘qub (Jacob) lost Yusuf (Joseph), he didn’t know the outcome. Yet he said, “I complain of my anguish and sorrow only to Allah, and I know from Allah what you do not know.” (Quran 12:86). His heart broke, but it broke toward Allah, not away from Him.Letting go is not giving up. It is releasing your grip on what was never in your hands to begin with. It is saying, “Ya Allah, I trust Your plan even when I can’t see it.” That kind of faith transforms anxiety into rida (contentment).Imam Ibn al-Qayyim said, “The one who truly knows Allah finds peace in His decree more than in his own desires.” This is the freedom of tawakkul: knowing that Allah’s wisdom is deeper than your wants. Sometimes He delays to protect you, sometimes He withholds to elevate you, and sometimes He removes to replace.The storm doesn’t always end when you want it to, but it always carries you exactly where Allah wants you to go. The key is to stop resisting and start resting in His will.Takeaway: Letting go is not loss; it’s alignment. When you stop fighting for control, you make room for Allah’s mercy to flow.<h3>Hadith</h3>“Be mindful of Allah, and He will protect you. Be mindful of Allah, and you will find Him before you. When you ask, ask Allah, and when you seek aid, seek Allah's aid. Know that if the entire creation were to gather together to do something to benefit you, you would never get any benefit except that Allah had written for you. And if they were to gather to do something to harm you, you would never be harmed except that Allah had written for you. The pens are lifted, and the pages are dried.” (Sunan al-Tirmidhi 2516) <h3>Practical Activity</h3>Action: Think of one situation you’ve been struggling to control, perhaps an unanswered dua or unresolved hardship. Say sincerely: “Ya Allah, I let go of my way for Yours.” Then, instead of over-analyzing, practice shukr (gratitude) for one blessing that remains.Why it helps:<ul><li>It builds acceptance and emotional resilience.</li><li>It trains the heart to see mercy even in uncertainty.</li><li>Gratitude shifts focus from what’s missing to what’s present. </li></ul><h3>Dua</h3><h2>يا حَـيُّ يا قَيّـومُ بِـرَحْمَـتِكِ أَسْتَـغـيث ، أَصْلِـحْ لي شَـأْنـي كُلَّـه ، وَلا تَكِلـني إِلى نَفْـسي طَـرْفَةَ عَـين</h2>Yā Ḥayyu yā Qayyūmu biraḥmatika astaghīth aṣlih lī sha'nī kullah wa lā takilnī ilā nafsī ṭarfata `ayn.O Ever-Living One, O Eternal One, by Your mercy, I call on You to set right all my affairs. Once a believer learns to trust Allah in uncertainty, life’s storms no longer shake the heart; they simply remind it Who controls the winds.The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was the living embodiment of tawakkul. When he hid in the cave during the Hijrah (Migration to Madina), his companion Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “If one of them looks down, they will see us!” The Prophet replied, “O Abu Bakr, what do you think of two when Allah is the third of them?” (Sahih al-Bukhari 3653). In that moment of danger, his trust was unshakable, because he saw Allah not as distant but as present.To live tawakkul daily means you act with excellence but release the outcome. You plan, but you do not panic. You pray, but you do not pressure the decree. It’s walking through each day with calm confidence that every closed door hides mercy and every delay carries wisdom.We live in a world that glorifies anxiety, constant checking, controlling, and competing. But the believer who trusts Allah walks differently: slower, lighter, freer. They still strive, but their heart no longer trembles. They have learned how Ibrahim, Musa, Maryam, and the Prophet (peace be upon them all) lived; when you have Allah, you lack nothing.To trust Him is to be untethered from fear, pride, and despair. It is to breathe again, knowing that the One who never sleeps is managing what keeps you up at night.Takeaway: Tawakkul is not a moment; it’s a believer's attitude. It’s walking through this world with open hands and a peaceful heart, certain that Allah never decrees except with perfect wisdom.<h3>Hadith</h3>Anas bin Malik narrated that a man said to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him):“O Messenger of Allah! Shall I tie it and rely upon Allah or leave it loose and rely upon Allah?" He said, "Tie it and rely upon Allah.”&nbsp;(Jami` at-Tirmidhi, 2517)&nbsp;Referring to an incident in which a Bedouin was inquiring about whether to tie his camel or simply rely on Allah to keep it safe from wandering.
