Quran Verses

قل للمومنين يغضوا من ابصارهم ويحفظوا فروجهم ذالك ازكى لهم ان الله خبير بما يصنعون ٣٠

قُل لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَ يَغُضُّواْ مِنْ أَبْصَـٰرِهِمْ وَيَحْفَظُواْ فُرُوجَهُمْ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ أَزْكَىٰ لَهُمْ ۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ خَبِيرٌْ بِمَا يَصْنَعُونَ ٣٠

قُل لِّلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ يَغُضُّواْ مِنۡ أَبۡصَٰرِهِمۡ وَيَحۡفَظُواْ فُرُوجَهُمۡۚ ذَٰلِكَ أَزۡكَىٰ لَهُمۡۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ خَبِيرُۢ بِمَا يَصۡنَعُونَ ٣٠

˹O Prophet!˺ Tell the believing men to lower their gaze and guard their chastity. That is purer for them. Surely Allah is All-Aware of what they do.

Surah An-Nur [24:30]

للمومنات يغضضن من ابصارهن ويحفظن فروجهن ولا يبدين زينتهن الا ما ظهر منها وليضربن

لِّلْمُؤْمِنَـٰتِ يَغْضُضْنَ مِنْ أَبْصَـٰرِهِنَّ وَيَحْفَظْنَ فُرُوجَهُنَّ وَلَا يُبْدِينَ زِينَتَهُنَّ إِلَّا مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهَا ۖ وَلْيَضْرِبْنَ

لِّلۡمُؤۡمِنَٰتِ يَغۡضُضۡنَ مِنۡ أَبۡصَٰرِهِنَّ وَيَحۡفَظۡنَ فُرُوجَهُنَّ وَلَا يُبۡدِينَ زِينَتَهُنَّ إِلَّا مَا ظَهَرَ مِنۡهَاۖ وَلۡيَضۡرِبۡنَ

... tell the believing women to lower their gaze and guard their chastity, and not to reveal their adornments except what normally appears. Let ...

Surah An-Nur [24:31]

ولا تقف ما ليس لك به علم ان السمع والبصر والفواد كل اولايك كان عنه مسيولا ٣٦

وَلَا تَقْفُ مَا لَيْسَ لَكَ بِهِۦ عِلْمٌ ۚ إِنَّ ٱلسَّمْعَ وَٱلْبَصَرَ وَٱلْفُؤَادَ كُلُّ أُوْلَـٰٓئِكَ كَانَ عَنْهُ مَسْـُٔولًۭا ٣٦

وَلَا تَقۡفُ مَا لَيۡسَ لَكَ بِهِۦ عِلۡمٌۚ إِنَّ ٱلسَّمۡعَ وَٱلۡبَصَرَ وَٱلۡفُؤَادَ كُلُّ أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ كَانَ عَنۡهُ مَسۡـُٔولٗا ٣٦

Do not follow what you have no ˹sure˺ knowledge of. Indeed, all will be called to account for ˹their˺ hearing, sight, and intellect.

Surah Al-Isra [17:36]

Lesson & Reflection

Every glance plants a seed in the heart. Some seeds grow into light, while others grow into shadows. The eyes are not merely organs of sight; they are doors to the heart. What we allow through them shapes how we think, feel, and worship.

In Surah An-Nur, Allah commands both men and women to lower their gaze before He commands them to guard their chastity. This sequence teaches us something profound: sin begins not with the act, but with the look that precedes it. The unguarded eye weakens the guarded heart.

Lowering the gaze is not about blindness to the world; it is about seeing with clarity. It is saying: “My eyes are a trust from Allah, and I will not use them in disobedience to Him.” Every time you turn away from what is forbidden, whether on the street, on your phone, or on a screen, you are performing a silent act of jihad (striving) against the nafs (ego). And Allah promises that whoever leaves something for His sake, He replaces it with something better.

In a world saturated with immodesty, scrolling becomes the modern gaze test. Every image, ad, or post can either pull the heart downward or lift it upward. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “The glance is one of the poisoned arrows of Satan. Whoever lowers his gaze for the sake of Allah, He will give him a sweetness of faith that he finds in his heart.” (Musnad Ahmad 4/358)

This “sweetness” is no small gift. It is tranquility, focus in prayer, purity of thought, and peace of conscience. When the eyes stop wandering, the heart stops trembling. And when the heart becomes still, it becomes capable of witnessing Allah’s beauty everywhere.

Takeaway: What you feed your eyes, you feed your soul. Guard your gaze, and you will find your heart beginning to heal.

Hadith

“The glance is one of the poisoned arrows of Iblis (Satan). Whoever lowers his gaze for the sake of Allah, He will give him a sweetness of faith which he will find in his heart.”
(Musnad Ahmad 4/358)

Even though this hadith is considered weak, there is merit in its content, and the advice in it is sound.

Practical Activity

Action: Today, consciously lower your gaze once when tempted to look at something impermissible, whether on a screen or in real life. When you do, quietly say: ‘Ya Allah, I choose You over desire.’

Why it helps:

It transforms temptation into worship.

It strengthens willpower and trains spiritual discipline.

It reclaims control from impulse and hands it back to the heart.

Dua

اللَّهُمَّ طَهِّرْ قَلْبِي مِنَ النِّفَاقِ، وَعَمَلِي مِنَ الرِّيَاءِ، وَلِسَانِي مِنَ الْكَذِبِ، وَعَيْنِي مِنَ الْخِيَانَةِ، فَإِنَّكَ تَعْلَمُ خَائِنَةَ الْأَعْيُنِ وَمَا تُخْفِي الصُّدُورُ

Transliteración

Allāhumma ṭahhir qalbī mina-n-nifāq,wa ʿamalī mina-r-riyāʾ, wa lisānī mina-l-kadhib, wa ʿaynī mina-l-khiyānah, fa innaka taʿlamu khāʾinata-l-aʿyun wa mā tukhfī-ṣ-ṣudūr.

Traducción

O Allah, purify my heart from hypocrisy, my deeds from showing off, my tongue from lying, and my eyes from betrayal. For indeed, You know the treachery of the eyes and what the hearts conceal.
