ولو انا كتبنا عليهم ان اقتلوا انفسكم او اخرجوا من دياركم ما فعلوه الا قليل منهم ولو انهم فعلوا ما يوعظون به لكان خيرا لهم واشد تثبيتا ٦٦
وَلَوْ أَنَّا كَتَبْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ أَنِ ٱقْتُلُوٓا۟ أَنفُسَكُمْ أَوِ ٱخْرُجُوا۟ مِن دِيَـٰرِكُم مَّا فَعَلُوهُ إِلَّا قَلِيلٌۭ مِّنْهُمْ ۖ وَلَوْ أَنَّهُمْ فَعَلُوا۟ مَا يُوعَظُونَ بِهِۦ لَكَانَ خَيْرًۭا لَّهُمْ وَأَشَدَّ تَثْبِيتًۭا ٦٦

If We had commanded them to sacrifice themselves or abandon their homes, none would have obeyed except for a few. Had they done what they were advised to do,1 it would have certainly been far better for them and more reassuring,

Explanation

These readings are two linguistic options for the exception. The majority (nominative) reading follows the general rule in cases of negation. Ibn ʿĀmir’s reading in the accusative (with alif) accords with the Levantine Codex (muṣḥaf).

He has revealed to you ˹O Prophet˺ the Book in truth, confirming what came before it, as He revealed the Torah and the Gospel
