They are part of the religion’s living beauty. Islam has rules of etiquette and manners that cover every aspect of life. These manners apply to the old and young, men and women, family members and strangers, public spaces and private moments. Shaykh Abd al-Fattah Abu Ghuddah explains that Muslim society is formed by both men and women, and through their behavior, Islam is introduced, recognized, and understood by others. This is why the Prophet ﷺ said, “Women are the counterparts of men,” a hadith cited in the books of Abu Dawud, al-Tirmidhi, and Musnad Ahmad.</p><p>This means that <em>adab</em> (refined Islamic manners) is about allowing revelation to shape the believer’s instincts. Islam teaches us how to pray, fast, give charity, and perform Hajj, but it also teaches us how to enter and leave a space, how to sit, how to clean ourselves, how to visit, how to speak, and how to carry ourselves among people. The author mentions the famous report of Salman al-Farisi, when a polytheist mockingly said that the Prophet ﷺ had taught Muslims everything, even the manners of relieving themselves. Likewise, a believer should not have a small amount of manners sprinkled over a life of harshness. Manners should be the broad foundation of one’s religious personality. Worship should make us easier to live with, not harder. Knowledge should make us more humble, not more arrogant. Religious identity should increase beauty, not roughness.</p><p></p><h3><strong>Appearance Is Part of the Muslim Personality</strong></h3><p>Moving from the inner foundation of manners to the outward appearance of the Muslim. The author explains that the Muslim personality is distinct because of its appearance, taste, manners, and character. Islam does not teach ugliness, carelessness, or rough presentation. Rather, the Prophet ﷺ taught his Companions to appear dignified and pleasant. The book cites the hadith in which the Prophet ﷺ told his Companions, “You are on your way to meet your brothers, put on a nice dress and fix your saddles so you appear distinct among people as a beauty mark on a beautiful face. Allah likes neither roughness nor rough manners.” The book references this report from Abu Dawud, Musnad Ahmad, and al-Hakim.</p><p>This is not vanity. Islam makes a clear distinction between beauty and arrogance. The Prophet ﷺ said, “He will not enter Paradise who has a grain of arrogance in his heart.” A man asked, “A man may like his dress to be nice and his shoes to be nice.” The Prophet ﷺ answered, “Allah is beautiful and likes beauty. Arrogance is to deny rights and look down upon people.” The book references this hadith from Sahih Muslim in the Book of Iman (faith).</p><p>This hadith gives balance. Looking clean, dignified, and pleasant is not arrogance. Arrogance is rejecting truth and belittling people. A believer may wear clean clothes, care for their scent, comb their hair, polish their shoes, and present themselves well, while remaining deeply humble before Allah. In fact, this outward care can become a form of mercy toward others. People are affected by what they see and smell. A clean, pleasant presence brings ease to gatherings, family visits, the masjid (mosque), and daily interactions.</p><p></p><h3><strong>Cleanliness as Worship and Mercy</strong></h3><p>The Sunnah (Prophetic way) is to remain clean, wear neat clothing, and smell pleasant. It cites the hadith narrated by Imam al-Bukhari from Salman al-Farisi that whoever takes a bath on Friday, cleanses himself, applies perfume if available, goes to Friday prayer without separating people sitting together, prays what he can, and listens to the Imam, will have the sins of the past week forgiven. The book also cites the hadith narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim from Abu Hurayrah that it is the duty of every Muslim to bathe once every week, washing the head and body.</p><p>Cleanliness is both physical and spiritual. The Prophet ﷺ gave the example of a person who has a river at his door and bathes in it five times a day. He asked, "Would any dirt remain?" The Companions answered: "No". The Prophet ﷺ said, "This is the example of the five daily prayers, through which Allah wipes away sins." Allah begins by addressing the believers directly: “Do not enter houses other than your own houses until you ascertain welcome and greet their inhabitants.” This means that a believer approaches another person’s space with humility, not entitlement. Before entering, the Muslim seeks permission, offers <em>salam</em> (the greeting of peace), and remembers that another person’s home is a trust.</p><p>This <em>adab</em> (refined Islamic manner) begins even before the door opens. A Muslim should knock or ring gently, wait properly, and avoid standing directly in front of the entrance. The purpose of seeking permission is to protect privacy. A door may open suddenly. A curtain may be moved. A person inside may be in a condition they would not want others to see. The Prophet ﷺ taught that permission was legislated because of sight. Source: Sahih al-Bukhari 6241.</p><p>Gentleness should be felt in the whole act of entering and leaving. Doors should be opened and closed calmly. Sounds should be lowered when people are resting. Those who are asleep should not be startled, and those who are awake should not be disturbed. The Prophet ﷺ said, “Gentleness is not found in anything except that it beautifies it, and it is not removed from anything except that it disgraces it.” Source: Sahih Muslim 2594a.</p><p>When entering one’s own home, the believer should also carry the light of salam. Anas ibn Malik reported that the Prophet ﷺ said to him, “O my son, when you enter upon your family, say salam. It will be a blessing for you and for the people of your house.” Source: Jamiʿ al-Tirmidhi 2698.<br>This makes the home a place entered with peace rather than noise, complaint, or carelessness. The first words a family hears can set the emotional tone of the house. <em>Salam</em> is a dua (supplication) for peace, mercy, and blessing, and the people of one’s home are most deserving of it.</p><h3><br>Respecting Boundaries Within the Home</h3><p>Islam also teaches respect within the family home itself. Allah says that when children reach maturity, they should seek permission, just as adults do. This protects modesty and preserves dignity between parents, children, siblings, and relatives. Familiarity does not cancel courtesy. The closer the relationship, the more beautiful it is when respect remains alive. Seeking permission before entering a private room trains the heart to honor boundaries and prevents embarrassment.</p><p>When visiting others, appointments and timing matter. Allah commands the believers to fulfill commitments (Quran 5:1), and He reminds us that every commitment will be asked about (Quran 17:34). A visit is a commitment of time, attention, and trust. Arriving late without notice, overstaying, or coming at an unsuitable time may burden the host. The Prophet ﷺ said, “The signs of a hypocrite are three: when he speaks, he lies; when he promises, he breaks his promise; and when he is trusted, he betrays the trust.” Source: Sahih al-Bukhari 33.<br>Keeping appointments is part of truthful character. When a person cannot come, they should inform the host as early as possible and apologize sincerely.</p><p>Allah also gives a powerful instruction for the visitor: if you are asked to return, then return. This protects hearts from resentment. A host may be tired, unwell, occupied, unprepared, or facing a private family matter. The believer accepts the response with a clean heart. The verse says this is “purer for you,” because it purifies the guest from suspicion and the host from pressure. A mature Muslim does not demand access to people’s time, homes, or explanations.</p><p>During a visit, the believer should lower the gaze from what is private, sit where invited, avoid inspecting the house, and refrain from asking burdensome questions. A guest is received as an honor, so the guest should respond with lightness and gratitude. If food or drink is offered, accept with appreciation unless there is a valid reason. If the gathering is small, avoid whispering privately with one person in a way that excludes another. The Prophet ﷺ said that when three people are together, two should not speak privately to the exclusion of the third until they mix with others, because that may cause sadness. Guests should be welcomed with warmth, given a suitable place to sit, and made comfortable without exaggeration. If they are staying overnight, they may need to know the <em>qiblah</em> (direction of prayer), where to make <em>wudu</em> (ablution), and where to rest. Clean towels, a tidy bathroom, and a peaceful space are all part of honoring the guest. Hospitality is not measured only by food. It is measured by dignity, comfort, and thoughtful care.</p><p>A Muslim home should be a place where people feel protected. A Muslim visit should be a source of connection, not exhaustion. A Muslim greeting should bring peace before any conversation begins. A believer’s words can bring comfort, guidance, reconciliation, and love, or they can spread harm, confusion, arrogance, and pain. Islam trains the tongue by teaching when to speak, how to speak, what to avoid, and how to listen. The Prophet ﷺ gave a principle that can transform every conversation: “Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him speak good or remain silent.” Source: Sahih al-Bukhari 6018 and Sahih Muslim 47.</p><p>This hadith places speech under the light of <em>iman</em> (faith). Words are no longer casual sounds. They are actions written by angels and presented before Allah. A believer should ask before speaking: Is this true? Is it needed? Is it beneficial? The mature Muslim does not speak merely because an idea appears in the mind. The mature Muslim speaks with intention.</p><p>Tone is part of meaning. A correct statement delivered with harshness may close a heart, while a gentle statement may open it. A believer should avoid raising their voice unnecessarily, interrupting, mocking, speaking over others, or using knowledge as a weapon. In discussions and disagreements, the goal should be clarity and sincerity. Debate becomes dangerous when the ego begins seeking victory more than truth. If someone misunderstands, the believer responds with patience. If someone is corrected, their dignity should remain protected. This is especially important in family conversations, religious discussions, community disagreements, and public gatherings.</p><p>Swearing by Allah should also be treated with seriousness. Allah warns against using oaths as a tool of deception. The name of Allah is sacred, so it should not become a casual habit in ordinary speech. Frequent oaths can make the tongue careless and may lead people into exaggeration or falsehood. A believer’s honesty should be strong enough that people trust their word without constant swearing. If an oath is necessary, it should be truthful, respectful, and free of manipulation.</p><p>Listening is also a form of worship when done with humility. When someone else is asked a question, rushing to answer may embarrass the person asked and make the listener appear intrusive. Patience in gatherings teaches the soul restraint. Knowledge has its own adab (refined Islamic manners). Sometimes the best contribution is to allow others to speak, especially elders, teachers, hosts, or those specifically addressed. A person who listens well becomes beloved, because people feel seen and honored in their presence.</p><p></p><h3>Honoring Those Allah Honored</h3><p>Social manners begin with honoring those whom Allah and His Messenger ﷺ taught us to honor. Elders, scholars, parents, hosts, guests, the poor, and people of dignity should be treated with recognition and care. The Prophet ﷺ said, “He is not one of us who does not have mercy on our young and does not honor our elders.” Source: Jamiʿ al-Tirmidhi 1919.</p><p>Respect for elders is not only a cultural preference. It is part of Islamic refinement. Elders carry years of worship, hardship, memory, and experience. When they enter a gathering, they should be given attention, a suitable seat, and precedence where appropriate. The Prophet ﷺ also said that part of honoring Allah is honoring the elderly Muslim, the carrier of the Quran who does not go to extremes or neglect it, and the just ruler. Allah joined worship of Him with excellent treatment of parents, and He commanded noble speech toward them, especially in old age. The Quran not only forbids striking or insulting them; it forbids even saying “uff,” a small expression of annoyance. This teaches the believer to control facial expressions, tone, impatience, and body language. The Prophet ﷺ said, “A child cannot repay his father unless he finds him as a slave, then buys him and sets him free.” Source: Sahih Muslim 1510a.</p><p>A Muslim’s social character also appears in how they treat the poor. Poverty is not a stain on a person’s honor. Many poor people are spiritually richer than those with wealth. The believer should speak to them with warmth, invite them without embarrassment, and never make them feel small. Gifts should also be received with gratitude. The Prophet ﷺ taught, “Whoever does you a favor, then repay him. If you cannot find anything with which to repay him, then pray for him until you think that you have repaid him.” Source: Sunan Abi Dawud 1672.</p><p>Good manners also extend beyond the Muslim community. Allah commands justice and kindness toward those who do not fight Muslims because of religion or drive them from their homes. The Prophet ﷺ said, “None of you truly believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself.” Source: Sahih al-Bukhari 13 and Sahih Muslim 45.<br>This love includes wanting guidance, safety, dignity, and goodness for others. A Muslim neighbor, colleague, classmate, or relative should see Islam through our fairness, trustworthiness, mercy, and principled conduct.</p><p></p><p>The believer’s tongue, social presence, and treatment of people are all part of daʿwah (inviting to Allah). Every conversation can either beautify faith or obscure it. Every gathering can either raise people’s dignity or diminish it. Speech, Society, and Honoring People

Meals, much as they are a part of our physical routines and can become mechanical, present daily opportunities to remember Allah, practice humility, honor others, and discipline the self. Weddings are not only social events. They are moments of joy, family connection, public blessing, and communal support. When a believer learns the <em>adab</em> (refined Islamic manners) of the table and the wedding gathering, ordinary enjoyment becomes a path to worship.</p><p>The Prophet ﷺ taught simple and beautiful manners for eating. ʿUmar ibn Abi Salamah said, “I was a boy under the care of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and my hand used to wander all over the dish. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me, ‘O lad, mention the name of Allah, eat with your right hand, and eat from what is nearest to you.’” Source: Sahih al-Bukhari 5376 and Sahih Muslim 2022a.</p><p>This hadith gives a complete foundation for eating. First, begin with Bismillah (in the name of Allah). This reminds the heart that food is not self-produced, self-owned, or guaranteed. It is rizq (provision) from Allah. Second, eat with the right hand, following the Sunnah (Prophetic way). Third, eat from what is near you, which protects the comfort of others and trains the self away from greed. These manners are easy enough for a child to learn and deep enough to refine an adult for a lifetime.</p><p>The Prophet ﷺ also taught gratitude after eating. Anas ibn Malik reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Allah is pleased with His servant who eats some food and praises Him for it, or drinks a drink and praises Him for it.” Source: Sahih Muslim 2734a.<br>Alhamdulillah (all praise is for Allah) should not be a word said mechanically. It is a recognition that the bite in your mouth, the water in your glass, the safety of your home, and the people around your table are all gifts. Many people eat without thinking, complain while eating, or waste what others desperately need. The believer learns to pause, praise, and become more aware.</p><p>Drinking has its own <em>adab</em> as well. The Prophet ﷺ instructed Muslims not to drink in one rushed gulp, but to drink in two or three breaths, mentioning Allah at the beginning and praising Him at the end. Others may drink after us. The Muslim is trained to think beyond personal appetite and to care about the comfort of others.</p><p>The Quranic command, “Eat and drink, but do not be excessive,” should sit at the center of every meal. Moderation is a spiritual quality. A believer may enjoy good food, accept hospitality, and be pleased with Allah’s blessings, but gluttony hardens the heart and lowers dignity. A guest should not behave as though every dish must be sampled or every desire must be satisfied. Eating with restraint honors the host, protects the body, and disciplines the nafs (lower self). The table becomes a place where gratitude defeats greed.</p><p>The Prophet ﷺ also forbade eating and drinking from gold and silver vessels. Hudhayfah reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Do not drink from vessels of gold and silver, and do not eat from plates of them.” Source: Sahih al-Bukhari 5426 and Sahih Muslim 2067a.<br>This teaches simplicity and protects the believer from showiness. Luxury that feeds arrogance harms the soul. A Muslim gathering should be beautiful, clean, and generous without becoming a display of pride.</p><p></p><h3>The Adab of Weddings and Celebration</h3><p>Wedding celebrations also carry sacred meaning. Marriage is one of Allah’s signs. Through it, He places tranquility, affection, and mercy between spouses. A wedding is, therefore, a joyful public recognition of a noble bond. When invited to a wedding feast, a believer should try to attend unless there is a valid reason. The Prophet ﷺ said, “When one of you is invited to a wedding feast, let him attend.” Source: Sahih al-Bukhari 5173 and Sahih Muslim 1429a.</p><p>Attending a wedding is more than appearing at an event. It honors the couple, strengthens family bonds, and allows the community to pray for blessings. The Prophet ﷺ taught a beautiful supplication for newlyweds: “May Allah bless you, and send blessings upon you, and bring you together in goodness.” Source: Jamiʿ al-Tirmidhi 1091 and Sunan Abi Dawud 2130.</p><p>A wedding guest should bring joy, not heaviness. Dress appropriately, speak with warmth, avoid gloomy or inappropriate topics, and help preserve the happiness of the occasion. Celebration should remain dignified, modest, and pleasing to Allah. In these moments, adab (refined Islamic manners) becomes especially important because people are more vulnerable. Travel exposes our dependence on Allah. Illness reminds us of our weakness. Death returns the heart to the reality that every soul belongs to its Creator. Islam teaches us to carry mercy, remembrance, and dignity through all of these situations.</p><p>Travel begins before departure. A believer prepares carefully, learns the rulings that may apply during travel, informs family of plans, chooses good company when possible, and begins with reliance on Allah. The Prophet ﷺ strongly discouraged unnecessary solitary travel. Ibn ʿUmar reported that the Prophet ﷺ said, “If people knew what I know about traveling alone, no rider would travel alone at night.” Source: Sahih al-Bukhari 2998.</p><p>The traveler should also begin the journey with dhikr (remembrance of Allah). Ibn ʿUmar reported that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mounted his camel for a journey, he would say Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest) three times, then recite the meaning found in the Quran: “Exalted is He who has subjected this to us, and we could not have otherwise subdued it. And indeed we, to our Lord, will surely return.” He would then pray, asking Allah for righteousness, taqwa (God-consciousness), ease in the journey, protection for his family, and safety from hardship. Source: Sahih Muslim 1342.</p><p>This dua (supplication) teaches the traveler humility. The vehicle may seem to be under human control, yet Allah is the One who subjects means to us. The road, the weather, the body, the timing, the destination, and the return are all in His hand. Travel should soften the heart because it shows how little we truly control. A believer does not leave home with heedlessness. A believer leaves with remembrance, gratitude, and prayer.</p><p></p><h3>Visiting the Sick With Compassion</h3><p>Illness also calls for mercy. Visiting the sick is one of the rights of a Muslim over another Muslim. The Prophet ﷺ said, “The rights of a Muslim over another Muslim are five,” and he mentioned returning salam (the greeting of peace), visiting the sick, following funeral processions, accepting invitations, and responding to sneezes. The screen may feel private, but Allah sees what is typed, sent, deleted, hidden, forwarded, and intended.</p><p>The first adab (refined Islamic manner) of written communication is to begin with salam (the greeting of peace) when appropriate. Allah teaches us to return greetings with something better or equal, and the Prophet ﷺ taught that salam spreads love. Allah commands us to verify information before spreading it, warning that careless sharing can harm people and lead to regret. Allah says we will be questioned about hearing, sight, and the heart. Allah forbids ridicule, insults, and offensive nicknames. (Quran 49:11) A joke about a race, nationality, profession, social class, spouse, in-law, gender, or body type may make people laugh while staining the heart. A Muslim should never treat another person’s dignity as entertainment. The same applies to memes, screenshots, private messages, and edited photos. Humor is allowed, but cruelty is not a virtue.</p><p>Groups can be a blessing when they connect family, share beneficial reminders, coordinate service, or strengthen ties of kinship. Posts, comments, photos, videos, and reactions may remain in records, screenshots, archives, and memories. More importantly, they remain with Allah. The Quran says that every person will meet a record spread open and will be told, “Read your record.” Before posting, ask: Will I be pleased to see this on the Day of Judgment? Does this honor modesty, truthfulness, humility, and concern for the needy? Am I posting for benefit, gratitude, family joy, or sincere sharing, or am I chasing attention and approval?</p><p></p><p>Digital <em>adab</em> means the Muslim character remains intact online. Begin with peace. Write with kindness. Thank people. Do not send in anger. Verify before forwarding. Review before posting. Protect dignity. Keep trusts. Remember your record.
