The Father and Son Who Chose Allah Over Everything:

Ibrahim (AS) walked away from his people, his homeland, and everything he had built his life around, saying simply: "I am going to my Lord, He will guide me." And when Allah finally blessed him with a son after all those years, He asked for that son back. What makes this story so breathtaking is not just Ibrahim's obedience but Ismail's (AS) response: "Do what you are commanded, you will find me, if Allah wills, among the patient." Father and son, both completely surrendered, both choosing Allah over everything they held dear. 

May Allah make us people who move toward Him even when the path is unclear, trusting that He who guided Ibrahim will guide us too.

How do we measure success? What is its true metric?
Conventionally, success is defined by a healthy bank balance, physical well-being, wealth, social respect, stability, and similar markers. Society tells us that if we possess these, we are successful.

Yet in these verses, success is measured by none of these things. Instead, it is defined by one profound criterion: submission to Allah.

True success lies in choosing Allah’s commands over the demands of our ego. Every moment your nafs calls you toward something that pleases you but displeases Allah, and you resist, that moment is success. Celebrate it.

This was the essence of Prophet Ibrahim’s (AS) legacy. He battled his nafs and consistently placed Allah’s pleasure above his own. What an achievement. What a victory. What a celebration. That is true success.#TrueSuccess ​

With Eid ul Adha approaching, I found myself reflecting deeply on the concept of sacrifice, inspired by the story of Prophet Ibrahim AS. The sacrificial animal symbolizes a profound act of devotion and submission to Allah SWT. It leads me to ponder: what can I sacrifice for my Lord?

Let's go back some 2000 BC, in the ancient lands of Mesopotamia in a city called Ur. There lived Ibrahim AS in a society steeped in idolatry, where his own father, Azar, was a craftsman of idols. Despite this, from a young age, Ibrahim was guided by an innate sense that the idols were not the true gods. He began to openly question the practices of his people for which he was cast into a blazing fire by King Nimrod. But in a miraculous turn, the fire became cool and harmless through God’s intervention, and Ibrahim emerged unscathed.

Ibrahim AS then journeyed to the land of Canaan, where he continued his mission of spreading the message of Islam. It was only in his old age that he was blessed with two sons. The elder one Ismael from Hajar AS and Isaac from Sarah AS. God then tested Ibrahim’s faith in an unimaginable way. In a vision, He commanded Ibrahim to sacrifice his beloved son, Ismael. The pain and conflict within Ibrahim must have been overwhelming. Yet, his faith did not waver. 

At the last moment, as Ibrahim’s knife was about to descend, God intervened, providing a ram to sacrifice in Ismael’s place. It is this moment of faith, obedience, and divine mercy that we celebrate each year on the 10th of Dhull Hijjah. 

What did we learn from this story?

Today, we live in a world where faith is often challenged, where the material and the superficial can overshadow the spiritual and the profound. Ibrahim's story reminds us of the importance of faith and trust in a higher power, especially in times of hardship and uncertainty.

It teaches us the value of submission—not in a passive sense, but as an active, conscious choice to align our will with what is just and righteous. 

Ibrahim's story is a powerful reminder of the importance of sacrifice in our lives. 

Sacrifice, in its essence, is about giving up something valuable for the sake of something greater. In our personal lives, this could mean sacrificing time and comfort for the well-being of our families, letting go of ego to mend a relationship, or setting aside personal ambitions to serve a greater good.

It also emphasizes the significance of intention and the purity of our actions. Ibrahim's intention was never doubted—his actions were driven by a sincere desire to fulfil God's command. 

Finally, the story highlights the importance of trust. Just as Ibrahim and Ismael placed their trust in God, we too must learn to trust in the journey of life. Trust that even in the face of the greatest trials, there is a purpose and a path that will lead to growth and fulfilment.

Ya Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate, we come before You with hearts full of gratitude and humility. Just as You guided Prophet Ibrahim AS in his unwavering faith and sacrifices, guide us in our own journeys. Strengthen our emaan, help us to trust in Your wisdom, and to prioritize Your commands above all else.

Bless us with Your mercy and guidance, and help us to follow the righteous path that leads to Your pleasure and eternal paradise. Ameen.
