There are two emotions most humans will spend their entire lives avoiding or chasing. Many will avoid sadness and many will chase joy.  

It's only human after all to avoid discomfort and pain and pursue comfort and happiness, though we know growth happens when we leave our 'comfort zones' and trials can lead to our greatest transformations. 

Allah qualifies the two emotions of sadness and joy, which He tells us He has enabled us to feel in Surat Al Najm, verse 43: 'Moreover, He is the One Who brings about joy and sadness', by reminding us in the verse preceding it and following it of our ultimate destination.  

God reminds us in verse 42 that to Him alone is the ultimate return of all things and in verse 43 that He is the One who gives life and death, once again reminding us of our return to Him.

In times of tragedy and heartbreak, like the earthquakes in Syria and Turkiye, and any suffering experienced by humanity around the world, remembering that as deep as the sadness is for lives lost, that they, and all of us are returning to An All-Loving and All-Compassionate Creator, can provide a source of comfort.

These verses remind us that any sadness and joy we feel is temporary and transient, and that the ultimate permanent reality is with God. 

We can honour how we feel, honour the grief and the joy, yet not become consumed by them.  

We can remember that these emotions are all a part of the experience God is unfolding for us to become the best version of ourselves, and to always go to Him in times of grief and joy.

We can remember we will ultimately return to Him and strive to do so with a heart that is sound, and a heart filled with love for Him and reliance on Him.
