ما تعبدون من دونه الا اسماء سميتموها انتم واباؤكم ما انزل الله بها من سلطان ان الحكم الا لله امر الا تعبدوا الا اياه ذلك الدين القيم ولكن اكثر الناس لا يعلمون

مَا تَعْبُدُونَ مِن دُونِهِۦٓ إِلَّآ أَسْمَآءً سَمَّيْتُمُوهَآ أَنتُمْ وَءَابَآؤُكُم مَّآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَا مِن سُلْطَـٰنٍ ۚ إِنِ ٱلْحُكْمُ إِلَّا لِلَّهِ ۚ أَمَرَ أَلَّا تَعْبُدُوٓا۟ إِلَّآ إِيَّاهُ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلدِّينُ ٱلْقَيِّمُ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ

Examples of “names” people have elevated almost like gods in the modern age (things treated as ultimate authorities or objects of devotion) include:

Money – believing wealth can solve everything and sacrificing values for it.

The Market / Capitalism – treating economic systems as the final authority on what is right or wrong.

The Nation / Nationalism – placing loyalty to the nation above all moral principles.

Science (when treated as absolute authority) – believing only science can define all truth and meaning in life.

Celebrity culture – idolizing actors, athletes, or influencers and imitating their lifestyles blindly.

Technology – trusting technological progress as humanity’s ultimate savior.

The Self (ego) – “follow your heart” or “do whatever makes you happy” as the highest rule.

Pleasure / Hedonism – making enjoyment and comfort the main purpose of life.

Success / Career – sacrificing family, faith, and ethics for status or achievement.

Beauty and appearance – treating physical attractiveness as the highest value.

The idea is that these become “gods” metaphorically when people give them ultimate devotion, obedience, or priority over truth and divine guidance.

The story of Prophet Yusuf and his brothers highlights many contrasts one of those crucial differences is emotional regulation. Yusuf Aleyhisalam possessed this skill, while his brothers lacked it. This disparity enabled Yusuf (AS) to succeed in every trial, whereas his brothers remained consumed by hatred for decades (see verse 8&77), their personal growth stifled.


But how did Yusuf Aleyhisalam develop this skill? Both he and his brothers received upbringing from the same father, yet their personalities diverged profoundly. In my opinion (Allah knows best), Yusuf's exceptional emotional intelligence stemmed from his connection with his Lord.
As for the Quran, in Surah 70, describes humans as prone to disputes, but exempts those who maintain prayers, a deeper connection with Allah SWT. Yusuf's Aleyhisalam strong bond with his Lord helped him navigate life's darkest moments. Even in prison, he maintained his connection and invited fellow inmates to do the same.

Psychology says that meditation is the most effective means of emotional regulation, teaching impulse control and refining reflexes. While I don't know Yusuf's Aleyhisalam specific devotional practices, the Quran outlines his adherence to the Abrahamic tradition.
Moreover, Yusuf's Aleyhisalam conversation with fellow prisoners, as recorded in the Quran, shows him advocating for the worship of the One God. He spent the apparently darkest days of his life with  the light of contemplation and remembrance  of the Almighty, acquiring the skill that elevated him from the depths of the well to royal dignity.


Indeed, in, (the story of) Yusuf and his brothers are signs for those who enquire. (V7)
The story of the prophet Yusuf and his brothers offers valuable lessons for those seeking personal growth, the key to which is  emotion regulation. and to attain it, one must cultivate a strong connection with Allah SWT, embracing the transformative power of contemplation and remembrance. Otherwise, decades will pass, and we'll remain stuck, perpetually enslaved to our emotions, idolizing the very feelings that stagnate our growth.

It’s incredible to reflect on how important the matters of faith truly are.

Deep within the dungeons of Egypt, the young Prophet Joseph (Yusuf) dedicated himself to teaching the Oneness of Allah (Tawheed). In a society dominated by false idols and misguided beliefs, he spoke tirelessly about the uselessness of worshipping gods made by human hands—powerless idols with no authority, no control, and names assigned by mere people. 

For years, he remained steadfast, not for a day, a week, or even a single year, but for many years—patiently and passionately calling people to recognize Allah’s Oneness. In the seclusion of the prison, away from the outside world, Joseph embraced this time as a blessing, using it to remind others that the greatest gift is to know and believe in Allah alone. 

So the lesson I learned from the story of Joseph is that any time we spend sharing the message of Islam—whether reminding others about Allah, engaging with someone who has doubts, or explaining the philosophy and way of life in Islam—is an act of worship (Ibadah). Finding and highlighting Islam in our everyday lives, and being a source of guidance and light for others, all count as valuable acts of devotion.

May Allah accept our efforts, guide our words, and open the hearts of those we speak to. May He bless us with sincerity, wisdom, and patience in spreading His message. Ameen
