Correction as Mercy, Not Humiliation

This verse reveals a rare kind of strength: humility that remains teachable without losing dignity. If a prophet seeks guidance with such adab, then refusing correction is not self-respect, it is self-sabotage, and accepting truth from others may be one of Allah’s quiet ways of saving you from blind spots you could not see.

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ


As I read the dialogue between Musa (عليه السلام) and al-Khiḍr, I couldn’t help but reflect on the character of Musa—not just his strength, but the deep humility that accompanied it.


When Musa meets al-Khiḍr, he doesn’t assert his position.
He doesn’t say:

'I am the one who spoke directly to Allah.'
'I split the sea by Allah’s command.'
'I led Bani Isra'il out of slavery.'

No.

Instead, he says:

قَالَ لَهُۥ مُوسَىٰ هَلْ أَتَّبِعُكَ عَلَىٰٓ أَن تُعَلِّمَنِ مِمَّا عُلِّمْتَ رُشْدًۭا
Moses said to him, 'May I follow you, provided that you teach me some of the right guidance you have been taught?' (Al-Kahf 18:66)

He asks permission.
He recognizes another’s knowledge.
He humbles himself as a seeker, even though he is a prophet.

The Reply of al-Khiḍr:
إِنَّكَ لَن تَسْتَطِيعَ مَعِىَ صَبْرًۭا
'You certainly cannot be patient with me.'

وَكَيْفَ تَصْبِرُ عَلَىٰ مَا لَمْ تُحِطْ بِهِۦ خُبْرًۭا
'And how can you be patient with what is beyond your realm of knowledge?' (18:67–68)

What a test of Musa’s character.
What a check on his ego.

And still, he replies:

سَتَجِدُنِىٓ إِن شَآءَ ٱللَّهُ صَابِرًۭا وَلَآ أَعْصِى لَكَ أَمْرًۭا
'You will find me patient, Allah willing, and I will not disobey you in any matter.' (18:69)

There’s something majestic here.

That the one who was given revelation, who had stood atop Mount Ṭūr, who had been chosen to speak directly to Allah—still humbled himself to seek knowledge from someone less known, and did so with grace, patience, and a heart open to guidance.

True strength doesn’t shout. True strength bows.
Bows not to people, but to Allah.
And in that bowing, it lowers itself to receive wisdom—even when it flows from humble hands, and voices not wrapped in revelation.

In a way, the pairing of Musa with Fir‘awn, and later with al-Khiḍr, teaches us this:

Where Fir‘awn boasted, Musa submitted.
Where Fir‘awn claimed to know, Musa admitted his limits.
Where Fir‘awn said 'I am your lord,' Musa said, 'May I follow you…?'

Allah didn’t just choose Musa for his strength.
He chose him for the way he carried it.

O Allah,
Humble our hearts before You,
Let us find our true shade and honor in walking Your path,
In surrendering ourselves as Your devoted servants,
Guide our steps, soften our souls,
And make our lives a reflection of Your mercy and light.

JUZ 15
THE LIGHT THAT REJUVENATES YOU IN MID RAMADHAN 

In any endeavour, the middle point is usually when you start to lose your zeal.
You start to lose focus and and get distracted. 

Just like how Allah SWT  Gifted The Night Journey and Ascension in the middle of Rasulullah's SAW 23-year long mission. At a time when he SAW felt the debilitating experience in Taif; at a time when the burden felt heaviest; at a time when he felt so alone,  Allah SWT Gifted him with Isra' wal Mi'raj. That single powerful event gave him comfort; lifted and ignited his spirit and energised his purpose. That experience was the Light that shone for the rest of his divine mission.

Similarly, halfway through the Quran in the middle JUZ, we are given the story of Musa AS and Khidr AS. In Musa's AS  quest for knowledge, he encountered events that challenged his comfort zone. Later,  he realised that these seemingly separate and disconnected actions of Khidr AS was meant to give him wisdom. 

As tiredness and stupor sets in mid Ramadhan, we take this lesson from  JUZ 15 to review our worship. 
Pause for a moment to regain your momentum. 
Redirect your focus and prioritise worship in the days gearing up to the end of Ramadhan.

Just as Rasulullah SAW was brought closer to Allah SWT in Isra' wal Mi'raj , bring yourself closer to Allah SWT.

A lot of people ask how can we have free will and freedom of choice if Allah has all knowledge and he knows what we are going to do?
Wa lilahi al mathalol a'laa
And to Allah is the greatest of examples.

Looking at Chapter 18: Al-Kahf, Verses: 65 — 70, 78, 82:
Why did Musa not act differently if Khidr told him the end result? How did Khidr know what the outcome of his interaction with Musa was going to be? Of course, the simple answer to this is that Allah endowed him with this knowledge. However, reflecting on the amazing interaction between Khidr and Musa. Khidr said from the beginning to Musa, you will not be patient. Musa replied that he would be patient. Khidr replies how do you know how you will act with something you do not have knowledge of. Musa then responds over and over again throughout his interactions with Khidr that he will be patient and not disobey him. From Musa's point of view he was in control of his own actions. He had free will to continue to ask and react to the situations even though Khidr told him it was going to be difficult and that he would not be patient. Did the knowledge that Khidr had interfere or impact Musa's role or reaction?


Referencing both Chapter 6 : Al-An'aam, Verses: 26 — 32 and Chapter 35 : Faatir, Verses: 37 — 39:
Where Allah clearly states that even with the knowledge that those in hell have if they were dropped back into the world, they would do the same exact thing with their free will and freedom of choice. It is not an acceptable excuse to say I did not know or I did not have long enough to pass the test. The knowledge that those in hell have as they are being punished, would not change their choices if they to return to earth, Allah says it is is a lie for them to think that way. Allah is the truth and what he has sent with the messengers is the truth.

Going back to Chapter 18 : Al-Kahf, Verses: 65 — 70, 78, 82:
SubhanaAllah even though Khidr told him directly, Musa freely made the choices that led to the outcome he was told about. So with Allah is the highest and greatest example, think about our role in the decisions we make. Allah has full knowledge of everything and he tells us directly in the Quran what is the outcome. Does that force what people choose to do directly?

With Allah ultimate knowledge and he knows everything about us with all knowledge of everything as the creator. Isn't the similitude mind blowing?

The above reflection adds to the example of a teacher Wa lilahi al mathalol a'laa. A teacher can usually tell if someone will pass or fail their final exam and class. This is based on the effort, the character, the work put in, etc. Because the teacher designed the course they know how students will interact. The teacher has a sense of which students will pass and which will fail. This is without even creation or real knowledge of those human beings, just on a given course.

The last point of similar reflection is if you are standing on the 30th floor of a building Wa lilahi al mathalol a'laa. You can see a car speeding down the road, on the other end of the street you see a ball rolling into the street with a child running behind. From the perspective of being above you can see that the distracted driver will hit the child with the car. You are not controlling either the driver of the car or the child running in the street. They each are making choices that are not controlled by you on that 30th floor. This is all within your limited knowledge that is confined in time and space.

Reflecting on the story of Khidr and Musa, the example of a teacher’s knowledge of their students, and the person standing on the building it is all linear in knowledge of the Human level.  Now compare that to the knowledge of Allah The Creator of the Human being, the heavens, and the earth as well as of time and space. The tenses in the Quran are not by happenstance, for Allah time is a creation as well. Past, Present, and Future, are known to him and not different things For Allah is Above and Greater than All things.  Allah has full knowledge which is the truth, the creation smaller than the atom to the vastness of the heavens and the universe.

Brother Ibrahim, Ma Sha Allah, I’ve never understood it this good before. SubhanAllah. 
May Allah benefit us from that which He SWT has taught us, and teach us that which will benefit us, and increase us in knowledge.

One of the most fundamental life lessons to me is the one offered in this story. We go through this every single day. Each one of us has his own so-called nonsense life events. We plan things precisely and they never occur, instead, some other unreasonable stuff happens. We work and we work and we work to get a specific defined result, but we never get it and we never know why. We may not know ever but at least in these ayat we know that the possibility of some upper hand controlling it all is there. At least we now know that Allah has his own plans for us. So we could fight the urge to analyze everything by human logic, because it’s definitely not how our lives work.
The thing is, we don’t have the person who explains like Musa had. The only choice we have is to be patient and trust the wisdom of Allah. 
May Allah make it easier for us to accept.

Some lessons from the story to bear in mind .
 
1.  Our limited knowledge of past, present, and future   Means that we are unqualified to pass judgment on  What we deem to be evil decrees (qadr) that seem to bring about no good. This is why the so called 'problem of evil' is in fact really only a problem for our limited intellect.
 2. Moses had limited knowledge of the present so wrongfully assessed AlKhidr drilling the hole in the boat as being bad because he was unaware of the tyrannical king behind them.
 3. Moses had no knowledge of the future so assessed the killing of the boy as evil because he didnt know the horrendous long term consequences that would arise as a result childs continued existence.
 4. Moses had limited knowledge of the past and thus wrongfully assessed AlKhidr fixing the wall of the townsfolk because he didnt know about the righteous man in the past who had a buried treasure under the wall nor about his orphan children who will benefit from it.
 Also, the story teaches us to not to hasten to judge if it appears bad things happen to good people or good things happen to  bad people. in the story it appeared that a bad thing happened to the good parents and ship crew and that a good thing was done for the greedy townspeople but the situations reality proved otherwise when we realized the wisdom behind it. 
 
We will not see the wisdom in all of Gods decrees in this world , but always remember that the one who created your mind and intellect did not give you more knowledge then He himself has for you to make any judgement calls on what he decides to decree.
