What You Were Given
Reading Al-Baqara (2:31-33) through the Hadith 

After the human being is introduced — with all the tension that comes with it — the Qur’an does not move immediately to action.

It turns instead to something less visible, but just as defining:
what was placed within.

وَعَلَّمَ آدَمَ الْأَسْمَاءَ كُلَّهَا ثُمَّ عَرَضَهُمْ عَلَى الْمَلَائِكَةِ فَقَالَ أَنبِئُونِي بِأَسْمَاءِ هَٰؤُلَاءِ إِن كُنتُمْ صَادِقِينَ
“And He taught Adam (peace be upon him) the names — all of them. Then He presented them to the angels and said: ‘Inform Me of the names of these, if you are truthful.’”( 2:31)

What Adam (peace be upon him) was given is described as “names” — something that points to recognition, distinction, and understanding.

And then, that knowledge is placed before the angels.
Not as a moment of failure — but as a moment of contrast.

قَالُوا سُبْحَانَكَ لَا عِلْمَ لَنَا إِلَّا مَا عَلَّمْتَنَا ۖ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ الْعَلِيمُ الْحَكِيمُ
“They said: ‘Glory be to You, we have no knowledge except what You have taught us. Indeed, You are the All-Knowing, the All-Wise.’”(2:32)

Their response is immediate.
They do not claim what they do not have. 
They do not go beyond what they were given.

And then Adam is asked:

قَالَ يَا آدَمُ أَنبِئْهُم بِأَسْمَائِهِمْ ۖ فَلَمَّا أَنبَأَهُم بِأَسْمَائِهِمْ قَالَ أَلَمْ أَقُل لَّكُمْ إِنِّي أَعْلَمُ غَيْبَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَأَعْلَمُ مَا تُبْدُونَ وَمَا كُنتُمْ تَكْتُمُونَ
“He said: ‘O Adam, inform them of their names.’ And when he informed them, He said: ‘Did I not tell you that I know the unseen of the heavens and the earth, and I know what you reveal and what you conceal?’”(2:33)

What stands out here is not a general comparison,  but something more specific.
The human being is shown to have been given knowledge — 
something that can be learned, developed, and expressed.

And this brings to mind how the Prophet ﷺ later spoke about knowledge — not as information alone, but as something that directs a person’s path.
This was said in gatherings where people were learning gradually — 
asking questions, sitting together, and seeking understanding step by step.

In that setting, he said:
“من سلك طريقًا يلتمس فيه علمًا سهل الله له به طريقًا إلى الجنة…”
“Whoever takes a path seeking knowledge, Allah makes a path to Paradise easy for him…” -Sahih Muslim

So knowledge was not something assumed.
It was something pursued — and something that shaped where a person was heading.

And in the Prophet’s ﷺ time, this pursuit was not abstract.
People would travel for knowledge. 
Sit for long periods listening. 
Ask, repeat, memorize, and return to what they had heard.
Knowledge was carried with effort.
And it was spoken about with a certain weight.

In gatherings like these — where people were learning, asking, and trying to understand — the Prophet ﷺ reminded them that knowledge is not simply something a person holds.
He said:
“لا تزول قدما عبد يوم القيامة حتى يُسأل عن… وعن علمه ماذا عمل به…”
“A servant’s feet will not move on the Day of Judgment until he is asked… about his knowledge — what he did with it.”- Jami` at-Tirmidhi

So knowledge begins to appear not only as something to gain…
but as something that accompanies a person — 
in what they understand,  and in how they act.

And this allows the ayah to be read not only as a moment in the past, 
but as something that points to human capacity:
-the ability to learn
-the ability to understand
-the ability to grow

At the same time, the response of the angels reflects something just as important.
When they do not know — they say so.
“لَا عِلْمَ لَنَا إِلَّا مَا عَلَّمْتَنَا”
“We have no knowledge except what You have taught us.”

So two qualities appear side by side:
-the capacity to know
-the awareness of limits

This also echoes the earlier statement:
“I know what you do not know.”
Not as a single explanation — but as something that continues to unfold.

Because knowledge alone does not define the human being.
It is how it is carried.
How it is used.
And what it leads to.

So what is being shown is not only knowledge — but also the weight that can come with it.

And that leaves something to sit with:
Not how much you know…
but what your knowledge is shaping in you — in how you think, choose, and act.

Knowledge is never neutral.
It always bears fruit, the question is what kind.

Will knowledge lead us to obedience or arrogance?
To submission or resistance?
To humility or pride?

The angels responded to knowledge with submission.

Iblis responded with knowledge mixed with ego.

The difference was not what they knew 
but what their hearts did with it.

Allah teaches us a powerful truth:
Above everyone who possesses knowledge is the All-Knowing.

No matter how much we learn, we remain students before Allah.

True knowledge softens the heart.
It increases awe, not entitlement.
It draws a servant closer to obedience,
not further into self-importance.

When knowledge inflates the ego,
it becomes a veil instead of a light.
When it humbles the heart,
it becomes a means of nearness to Allah.

Trust Allah.

His knowledge preceded your creation,
your struggles, your questions, and your future.
Nothing you are discovering now
is new to Him. So submit wholeheartedly. 

On a journey of seeking knowledge? Pause regularly and check your heart:
Why am I seeking knowledge?
Who do I want to impress?
What do I hope it will make me feel?

Then renew your intention:
to know Allah,
to obey Him more sincerely,
to submit even when understanding is incomplete.

Ibn Al-Qayyim [رحمه الله] said:

❝Knowledge is food for the heart, its drink, its medication. The heart being alive is dependent upon knowledge. When the heart is devoid of knowledge then it is dead.❞

[Miftaah Daar As-Sa’aadah, (1/344) |

May Allah grant us knowledge that bears the fruit of humility, leads us to obedience, and keeps us aware that we are always standing before the Knower of all things.

These verses spell out God's love for us. He created the earth, the seven heavens, brought forth our father Adam as a dignified human being, gifting him with knowledge, asked the angels to prostrate before him, told him to enjoy all of the blessings in heaven with his spouse except one tree, and when Satan deceived them , Allah taught Adam how to repent - He did not leave him alone or not forgive him.  

To God belongs the greater example, just as a parent prepares a home for a child, teaches them, supports them to have enjoyment and when they make a mistake, guides them on how to make amends, God loves us and prepares us to be close to Him.

Do you feel His love for you ? 

Do you feel it surrounding you in the earth and the heavens? 

Do you feel it with you when you fall and return to Him ? 

Alhamdullilah, may we be always gifted with Allah's love.

We should keep reminding ourselves of our belief in ALLAH that He is pure and perfect (from any kind of impurity and imperfection), everything about Him is perfect.. therefore our decree, that is written by Him, is also perfect that encompasses everything that is beneficial for us in both duniya and aakhirah. We are the ones who may not fully comprehend His wisdom and plans, but our task is simply to place our trust in Him wholeheartedly and surrender ourselves completely to His divine wisdom and guidance.

قَالُوا۟ سُبْحَٰنَكَ لَا عِلْمَ لَنَآ إِلَّا مَا عَلَّمْتَنَآۖ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ ٱلْعَلِيمُ ٱلْحَكِيمُ. (2:32)
'They said, 'To You belongs all purity! We have no knowledge except what You have given us. Surely, You alone are the All-knowing, All-wise.'
~ i.e, it is not appropriate on our part to raise any objection to You or to go against Your command. verily:
•'You are the All-Knowing', You encompass all things with Your knowledge, so nothing is hidden from You, even so much as a small ant or anything greater than that, on earth or in heaven.
•'The Most Wise', the One to Whom belongs perfect wisdom from which no creature is excluded, nothing of what He commands is beyond His wisdom. He has not created anything except for a reason and He has not commanded anything except for a reason. 
Wisdom means putting things in the appropriate place. So (this shows) the angels recognised the wisdom and knowledge of Allah and acknowledged their own inability to know the slightest thing. [As-Sa'adi]

JazakALLAHu khairan kaseeran sheikh. Alhamdulillah. 

An amazing similarity. In the story of Adam, after asking the angels to name the things that he taught Adam, they admitting to not knowing. So upon Adam proving his superiority in knowledge, Allah asked the angels to prostrate to him. Also in the story of Yousef, after the king asked the interpreters to explain his dream, they were unable to do so, so once Yousef was able to do so after their inability, it resulted in his elevation in status as it did with Adam.
It seems that sometimes that sometimes Allah, if he wants someone to shine and to elevate their status, He will first show the futility of others before putting the spotlight on that individual so his talents are more appreciated and his status is raised even more. We see a similar case when Omars companions blamed him for bringing Ibn Abbas as a child to their meetings which discussed matters related to the Ummah. To prove his worth he asked them their understanding of Surah al Nasr. After giving their interpretations, which were all correct, he asked ibn Abbas for his and his proved to be the most insightful and this was a cause of his elevation in their eyes.

Mashallah those are such insightful observations.

When reading this short passage we see the angels , whom Allah speaks to directly and are able to witness the world which is currently unseen to us , were not able to see the wisdom of Adams creation and inheritance of the earth when their assessment, which proved correct , is that his offsprings will cause corruption on earth and spill blood. Allah made it clear there is a greater wisdom in his creation than meets the eye that only the All knowing can see. The lesson learned is that the servent should know he will not always be able to detect the wisdom in everything , rather he might miss the wisdom in most things whether it be occurrences, laws in Islam , or even the creation of certain creatures and phenomenon in our visible world. When the wisdom as to why is hidden from our very limited intellect we need to accuse our intellect before accuse the wisdom of Allah. In fact if we continue in the story we see that the one who put his intellect before the command of Allah, shaitan, was cursed and banished from the presence of Allah when he refused to bow to Adam on the basis of him being created from a better substance (fire vs mud). His attempt to place his limited intellect before the wisdom of the All knowing is what led to his demise. However the difference between the  Adams disobedience and the disobedience of shaitan was that Adams disobedience was one of weakness and desire which is why it was followed up with repentance and acceptance from the most merciful . However shaitans disobedience came from a position of arrogance and refusing to subdue his intellect before the law of Allah and thus led to his demise.
