سورہ تکاثر کی ابتدائی آیات ہمیں بتاتی ہیں:


'دنیا میں زیادتی کی حرص نے تمہیں غافل کر دیا ہے، یہاں تک کہ تم  قبروں تک پہنچ گئے ہو۔' (102:1-2)


یہ آیات ہمیں یاد دلاتی ہیں کہ انسان دنیا کی چیزوں میں اتنا مگن ہو جاتا ہے کہ وہ اپنی اصل حقیقت اور مقصد بھول جاتا ہے۔ یہاں 'زیادتی' کا مطلب صرف مال و دولت کا جمع کرنا نہیں، بلکہ ہر چیز میں 'مزید' کی طلب ہے—زیادہ کھانا، زیادہ تفریح، دنیا کی ہر چیز میں بڑھوتری کی خواہش۔ یہ ہمارے دل کو سکون دینے کی بجائے، ہمیں بے سکون کر دیتی ہیں۔


ہم اپنی خواہشات اور cravings کو پورا کرنے کی کوشش میں اتنے مگن ہو جاتے ہیں کہ ہمیں یہ نہیں دکھتا کہ ان 'زیادہ' کی طلب سے ہم روحانی طور پر خالی ہوتے جا رہے ہیں۔ جتنا زیادہ ہم دنیا کی چیزوں میں مشغول رہتے ہیں، اتنا ہی ہماری خواہشات بڑھتی جاتی ہیں اور ہم کبھی بھی مکمل طور پر مطمئن نہیں ہوتے۔


*رمضان کا مقصد*


رمضان اس 'زیادتی کی حرص' سے نکلنے کا ایک اہم ذریعہ ہے۔ رمضان ہمیں یاد دلاتا ہے کہ جب ہم دنیا کے چھوٹے چھوٹے لذتوں سے رک کر اللہ کی عبادت اور ذکر میں مشغول ہوتے ہیں، تو ہماری روح کو سکون ملتا ہے۔


روزہ ہمیں جسمانی طور پر بھوکا رکھ کر، روحانی طور پر بھی خود کو 'زیادہ' کی خواہشات سے آزاد کرنے کا موقع دیتا ہے۔


اللهم اجعل قلوبنا زاهدة في الدنيا، راغبة في الآخرة
اللہ ہمیں دنیا سے بے رغبت اور آخرت کی طرف راغب کرے۔


یہ دعا ہمیں یہ یاد دلاتی ہے کہ ہم اپنی زندگی میں دنیا کی حرص اور خواہشات کو کم کریں اور آخرت کی طرف دل سے راغب ہوں، جہاں کا سکون اور کامیابی ہمیشہ کے لیے ہے

As we read this Surah, we face a series of wake-up calls in order to avoid being consumed by endless competition, forgetting the harsh reality of death, and taking Allah's (SWT) countless blessings for granted. He begins by confronting the distraction that never ceases to dominate our lives: the "competition for more" (102:1). People around us, and perhaps us ourselves, easily find themselves trapped in comparison and a desire for materialistic wealth. This struggle is even more visible today, where success is often measured by what we own and have (e.g. social media followers, large amounts of money) rather than who we are.

This harsh reality serves as the first wake-up call to us as devout servants of Allah (SWT); we are forced to reflect: How would our lives change if we stopped focusing on competition and instead shifted our energy towards pleasing our Creator? We should never let our lives be defined by what others have; rather, we should always place our efforts to become closer to Allah (SWT) at the center of our lives.  

Even doing something as simple as setting aside a few minutes of time to read the Qur'an or giving even a small amount of charity consistently to those who need it can allow us to redirect our hearts away from envy and competition and towards sincere devotion to Allah (SWT). We can attend our local mosques more to increase our  devotion and worship, and we can strengthen our connection with Allah (SWT) by joining Islamic study groups and engaging in acts of community service that help the needy.

It is still possible to escape this competition in ways that require no resources at all, such as helping out a loved one with their daily responsibilities and treating others with compassion, respect, and empathy. The choices we make now will reveal their true weight in Jannah; as Allah (SWT) tells us, we "will soon come to know" the true worth of these small yet meaningful actions (102:2).

'The real test isn't hardship — it's comfort.'

I read this statement in one of my friend's post and it made me think... 
Such a profound thought. The real danger of slipping away from Him doesn't often lie in hardship — most people tend to come closer to Him during difficult times.

But comfort — it’s the time when we become used to our routines: working, sleeping, eating, even praying — but on autopilot.
No motivation to stay longer in sujood.
No urge to cry to Allah for the immense gift of ease.
No drive to wake up for tahajjud just to say, 'Thank You.'

Slowly, we become numb.
Unaware of how truly blessed we are — to have peace when others are being tested left and right with the loss of even their basic necessities.

And unintentionally — or God forbid, intentionally — we begin to feel entitled.
As if we deserved this life.
As if we earned it.
While those suffering were somehow less fortunate, or failed to make the right choices.

But isn’t that a terrifying thought?
To believe that they are the ones being tested... while we, in our comfort, are left to our own devices — unaware that this might actually be the greater test.

Yes, our test is comfort.
This time.
This ease.
And we will be questioned.

What did we do with our free time?
With our peace of mind?
With our stability?
Did we spend it well?
Did we show gratitude?
Or did we still complain, comparing ourselves to those living even more luxuriously — wanting more, feeling less?

Did we use our comfort to ease the suffering of others?
Or did we build higher walls around our lives, so their pain wouldn’t disturb our view?

It’s frightening how comfort can pull people away from Allah.
Because somewhere deep inside, they begin to think:
'I must be favored. I must be rewarded. This ease is proof that I’m doing well.'
And then they believe others — those in hardship — are the ones who need to turn to Allah.
Not us.
We're already 'blessed.'

But what if this very comfort is the test we’re failing?

Ya Rabb, make us truly grateful for every blessing — small or great.
Do not let our hearts deviate from You. Keep us close, even when we begin to drift.

Ya Rabb, protect our hearts from entitlement.
Remind us — every comfort is from You, and You are perfectly capable of taking it away in a blink.

Preserve our blessings, Ya Rabb, and don’t let our hearts become so attached to Your gifts that we become numb if You take them back.

Keep our hearts firm, Ya Rabb, and let us not lose You in our search for better comforts.

Because with every comfort in this world,
if one does not have You, they have nothing but a barren heart —
and a barren heart can never be satisfied.

The only thing that can satisfy it then...
is the stillness of the grave.



اللَّهُمْ لَا تَجْعَلْ مُصِيبَتَنَا فِي دِينِنَا وَلَا تَجْعَلِ الدُّنْيَا أَكْبَرَ هَمْنَا، وَلا مَبْلَعْ عِلْمِنَا ، وَلَا تُسَلَّظ عَلَيْنَا مَنْ لَا يَرْحَمْنَا 
'O Allah, do not make our affliction in our religion. Do not make the world our greatest concern or the limit of our knowledge. And do not place over us those who will not show us mercy.

﷽

'Competition in worldly increase has distracted you, until you visit the graves.' (102:1-2)

Surah At-Takathur isn’t just about accumulating wealth or increasing assets—it’s about the endless pursuit of ‘more’ in every aspect of life.

More food on the plate, more entertainment to fill our time, more distractions to keep our minds occupied. It’s the subtle, everyday greed that often goes unnoticed.

This endless pursuit is fueled by our dopamine-driven world. The more we indulge in small pleasures, the more our nafs craves them. A little extra serving today becomes the expectation for tomorrow. The momentary thrill of scrolling, snacking, or seeking validation online feeds into an insatiable cycle. And before we know it, our hearts are restless, always chasing the next thing, never content, never still.

But Ramadan pulls the strings back. It strips away the distractions and forces us to confront our nafs. In hunger, we recognize our dependence. In restraint, we reclaim control. The emptiness we feel in fasting is not just physical—it is a reminder of how much we have been feeding our desires, and how little we have been feeding our souls.

Can you think of some of the unnecessary indulgences you are caught in? 

اللهم اجعل قلوبنا زاهدة في الدنيا، راغبة في الآخرة.
Allahumma aj‘al quloobana zahidah fid-dunya, raghibah fil-akhirah.

'Ya Allah, make our hearts detached from the dunya and eager for the Hereafter.'

أَلْهَاكُمُ التَّكَاثُرُ ﴿١﴾ حَتَّىٰ زُرْتُمُ الْمَقَابِرَ ﴿٢﴾
'Competition for more ˹gains˺ diverts you ˹from Allah˺, until you end up in ˹your˺ graves' (102:1-2).

These first two ayats hold up a mirror to our reality, exposing a truth we often ignore: we are in a race that never ends, until death stops us in our tracks.

In this Surah, Allah (swt) reminds us that the worldly things that we human beings are very deeply absorbed in relentlessly collecting and running after, and competing with each other in, can divert us from Allah (swt). Our obsession with accumulating more, more wealth, more status, more recognition, can blind us to our true purpose. The nafs is never satisfied. It always craves the next thing, convincing us that if we just acquire a little more, we’ll finally be content. But the moment we get what we wanted, a new desire takes its place. The cycle repeats, and before we know it, life has slipped away.

The world has trained us to believe that success is measured by how much we own, how much we achieve, and how much higher we climb than others. But in reality, each achievement only tightens the grip of greed. What was once a goal turns into a stepping stone for another, and another, until we lose sight of the very reason we were placed on this earth.

Let's reflect deeper on the most sobering part of this ayat: 'until you end up in your graves' See? The chase ends, not when we have finally acquired everything we wanted, but when we can no longer chase at all. The moment we enter our graves, everything we fought so hard to collect is left behind. The wealth we saved, the power we wielded, the knowledge we prided ourselves on, none of it will accompany us. Only our deeds will remain. 
So what are we really chasing? And at what cost?

The world was never meant to satisfy us, it was meant to test us. Every blessing we are given will be questioned. Our wealth, our knowledge, our influence, how did we use them? Did we let them distract us, or did we use them for the sake of Allah (swt)? 

Now, let me ask again, but this time, imagine these questions are being asked to you, and you have to answer them:
What did you do with your wealth? Did you hoard it, chase after more, let it consume you? Or did you use it to help, to give, to serve? How did you use your knowledge? Did you let it inflate your ego, prove your superiority, or did you use it to guide, to humble yourself, to draw closer to Allah (swt)? And the things you spent your life for, did they bring you closer to Allah (swt), or did they pull you away? Did they nourish your soul, or just feed your desires?
One day, these questions won’t just be reflections. They will be reality. And the answers? They won’t be in words, but in the life we’ve lived. So before that day comes, what will your answer be?

Eventually, we need to understand that true wisdom is not in endlessly chasing and acquiring, but in knowing when to stop. In realizing that contentment is not found in having more, but in being grateful for what we have.
So, let’s pause. Let’s reflect. Let’s remind ourselves that no matter how much we chase, the grave is our final stop.

May Allah (swt) guide us to live with gratitude, to seek what truly benefits us in the Hereafter, and to return to Him with hearts that are sound and content.
آمِيْنُ يَا رَبَّ الْعَالَمِيْن

Ameen.!
Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi rajiun.!

[1] The Danger and Cure for Materialism

Materialism is like a deadly disease—comparable to cancer—that eats our peace of mind and damages families and society at large. It drives people to seek validation through possessions, achievements, or recognition, leaving them in a constant state of unrest.

I find that Surah At-Takathur (Quran 102) offers a powerful cure to this destructive mindset. It addresses humanity's obsession with acquiring more—whether it's wealth, status, career milestones, or even the achievements of one’s children, as Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan insightfully describes. The surah reminds us that if we were to redirect this obsession toward reflecting on death and the Hereafter, it would transform our perspective. It calls us to live with the awareness of the Day of Judgment, imagining ourselves as though we are witnessing it unfold.

Even if we fail to live with this awareness now, the surah assures that after death, the certainty (‘Aynul Yaqeen) will hit us—either through the horrors of the grave or on the Day of Judgment. It stresses that every individual will be held accountable for the blessings they were given. This accountability shifts the mindset from boasting about what we have, to being grateful and anxious, knowing we will answer for every gift.

This balanced view teaches us that while blessings invite celebration and joy, they also come with responsibility. The more we are given, the more we will be questioned about how we used those blessings. This balance helps temper the obsession with wanting more—even good things—because with greater blessings comes greater accountability.

To conclude, the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his Houshold) said in a hadith recorded in Sahih Muslim:
'Anas ibn Malik reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, 'Paradise and Hellfire were shown to me, and I have never seen such good or evil as I have today. If you knew what I know, you would laugh little and weep often.''

This is the essence of certainty—living with the knowledge of what lies beyond this life, transforms how we perceive and pursue the things of this world

The relentless pursuit of novelty and the insatiable desire for more and more to fulfil oneself inevitably leads to exhaustion. 

Despite tirelessly chasing after these fleeting desires, a profound sense of dissatisfaction persists. It's a paradox of modern life - the more we seek to satisfy ourselves, the more discontent we become.

Anas bin Malik reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, 'If the son of Adam had a valley full of gold, he would want to have two valleys. Nothing fills his mouth but the dust of the grave, yet Allah will relent to whoever repents to Him.'

True satisfaction, however, lies not in the pursuit of endless wants, but in embracing gratitude for what we already have. It's about recognizing and cherishing the blessings that Allah has bestowed upon us, from the simplest joys to the most profound gifts of life itself. When we genuinely appreciate these blessings and cultivate a deep sense of gratitude, our hearts find peace and contentment.

Moreover, genuine happiness emerges from loving and respecting the people in our lives. It's about valuing their presence, their love, and their support, recognizing the richness they bring to our lives. In nurturing these relationships and showing appreciation for the people around us, we discover a profound source of joy and fulfilment.

In contrast, the pursuit of material wealth, status, or endless desires is like chasing after a mirage in the desert. No matter how fast we run, we can never grasp it, and the pursuit only leaves us drained and weary. It's a never-ending cycle of craving and dissatisfaction that ultimately leads to emptiness.

On the other hand, gratitude and appreciation are like dwelling in a lush garden, surrounded by the beauty of Allah's blessings. The sight of this abundant greenery brings solace to our souls, offering a respite from the relentless chase for more.

So now, we face a choice - to continue the exhausting pursuit of desires that can never truly satisfy or to embrace the path of gratitude and appreciation, where true happiness resides. It's a decision that shapes the course of our lives and determines the depth of our contentment.

IN THE NAME OF ALLAH, THE BENEFICENT, THE MERCIFUL

Rivalry in worldly increase distracteth you (1) Until ye come to the graves. (2) Nay, but ye will come to know! (3)Nay, but ye will come to know! (4) Nay, would that ye knew (now) with a sure knowledge! (5) For ye will behold hell-fire. (6) Aye, ye will behold it with sure vision. (7) Then, on that day, ye will be asked concerning pleasure. (8)

This is a short surah from the Quran with a large and impactful meaning on the believer’s mind and heart. From the first moment of reading the Ayat you feel Allah is calling on you in a strong voice and language giving you a warning, to wake up those who are absorbed and preoccupied in life and oblivious to the facts and truth of what is waiting for each and every soul: death and the afterlife.

Takāthur is a word for increase and multiplication of everything in life that a human enjoys collecting and rivaling others in, which includes money, children, properties, cars, clothing, friends, and many more. All these materialistic things that we are very deeply absorbed in collecting and running after, and competing with others in.

Allah (swt) gives us the news that after all of what we do, the fun we have, and all of what we collect, the next stop is the grave. It’s a fact that no matter who you are, or what you believe, every human being is going to die, sooner or later.

I had the opportunity to visit my uncle’s grave this past weekend, and it was a strong reminder to myself that this is where we all end up. So we should all keep in mind doing more for our afterlife and our permanent destination.

Does this mean we can’t have fun, earn money, and enjoy life? Of course not! We as believers are asked to have a balance in our life. We should not make our only mission in life to make money, for example. And after we make money, what do we do with it? How do we spend it?

This surah encourages us to live a balanced life between our personal desires and needs and our responsibilities towards our own future and final destination.

For a person who Allah swt has blessed with wealth, these Ayat encourage them to spend for the sake of Allah, as we know for a fact we are not taking any of this world’s wealth to our grave and we are not going to skip this stage. 

We all try to invest for our retirement in this temporary world, but have we thought about investing for our permanent retirement in the Afterlife?

As recorded in Sahih Muslim, the Prophet Muhammad (SAAW) said: 'When a man dies, his deeds come to an end except, for three things: Sadaqah jariyah [continuous charity], knowledge which is beneficial, or a virtuous descendant who prays for him [the deceased].'

Give, donate, live humbly, and invest in your permanent home, the afterlife. We will all return to Allah (swt) our Creator.

In the fleeting life of this world being able to remind ourselves of what we are bestowed upon are to be served in the way of Allah, is no more than a blessing. For it keeps a human grounded. May Allah make us among them. Ameen. 

Islamic Relief USA

In the Name of Allaah the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate,

My father had been very sick for almost 10 years. He suffered from vascular dementia, Parkinson’s, epilepsy, diabetes and hypertension. We watched him turn from a strong man into a frail old child. Despite, his memory loss, if you would mention Islam to him he would have tears in his eyes and express his love for his religion. Every year, I asked myself ‘is this his final year?’ He died on 3rd Ramadan at the start of the Pandemic. 

Purposely, I waited some time before I went to visit his grave. I wanted to go alone. As a woman whereby Allaah has bestowed upon women a more emotional heart, I wanted to gain composure and cry silently with full trust upon my Creator. It was 6 weeks after his hazy janazah.

I wanted my visit to be deeply meaningful. 

I entered the graveyard, and looked around the cemetery of non Muslims; child graves, floral and picture tributes, some died 100 years ago whilst some died only a few months ago.  I hurried past to find the place allotted for the Muslims. I greeted them as per the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad peace and blessings be upon him which translates:

'Oh Muslims residing here, salaams on you, by the will of Allah we will also be coming to you. We seek safety for us and you.'
Muslim 2:671, Ibr Majah 1:494

I paused, and I realised this is the reality 'we will also be coming to you. We seek safety, for us and you.'

Then, I stood at my father’s grave and although I had  almost 10 years to get used to the fact he will pass. I never ever got used to it. It still came as a shock, and the memories of my childhood, my teenage years and my early twenties and then his long illness felt as though it lasted for only one or two years! I thought  ‘how mankind walks upon the earth, as though he will live forever, but it is so quickly that he has to return within the earth.'  I also concluded that this test is a short one, even for those with longer lifespans.  The tests we face can often involve distractions; wealth, entertainment, children and so on. We can overcome these distractions when we remember our death frequently. Furthermore, if we use our blessings correctly by remembering Allaah more, then we also become less diverted from our true purpose.

At the graveyard, I did not cry so much for my father, as much as I cried at the state of my heart and the state of the lack of preparation I have made to face my own inevitable death. From that day onwards I have never been the same. But I am so glad I have never been the same.

Preparing, for death is a cure against being sucked in by the disloyal world that has to end. A king, an emperor, a lecturer, a street sweeper, sports men and others could not divert death. Neither, can we who are currently upon the earth taking our test. 

This was the last Surah my father taught me. For some reason, I am so glad it was. May Allaah grant him and all the Muslims peace and make it easy for all of us in every station. Ameen. 

A blessing is truly a blessing when it makes us remember Allaah. Whatever, state we are in may it allow us to remember Allah, showing gratitude, seeking His forgiveness and remembering our purpose. Ameen.

Anyone who struggles with insomnia can understand how terrible it feels to be unable to get peaceful sleep and the agony you experience when you have to get up and start the day. 

Imagine how horrific it would feel to be in this state inside of the grave. And then to have to get up for the Day of Judgement in a confused and agitated state.

It's time to WAKE UP while we have a chance. Our journey into the akhirah could begin at any moment. It could begin today. Let's not go into our graves just to wake up when it's far too late.
