یہ آیت۔
سب آیتوں میں یہ مجھے سب سے زیادہ لگی۔
آدم سے غلطی ہوئی۔ جنت چھوٹی۔ زمین پر آنا پڑا۔
وہ لمحہ سوچو ،کیسا لگا ہوگا؟
شرمندگی۔ پچھتاوا۔ خود سے نفرت شاید۔
اور اللہ کے پاس واپس کیسے جائیں، الفاظ بھی نہیں تھے۔
تو اللہ نے کیا کیا؟
فَتَلَقّٰٓى اٰدَمُ مِنْ رَّبِّهٖ كَلِمٰتٍ 
خود الفاظ دیے۔
خود بتایا، میرے پاس یوں آؤ۔ یہ کہو۔ بس آ جاؤ۔
اللہ نے راستہ بند نہیں کیا بلکہ خود ہاتھ بڑھایا۔
فَتَابَ عَلَيْهِ 
توبہ قبول ہو گئی۔
اتنی بڑی غلطی، جنت کا معاملہ۔ اور اللہ نے قبول کر لیا۔
کیوں؟
التَّوَّابُ: بار بار قبول کرنے والا۔ ہر بار۔
الرَّحِيْمُ : رحم کرنے والا۔
اگر آدم کی قبول ہوئی، ہماری کیوں نہیں ہوگی؟
جو بھی ہو گیا، جتنا بھی ہو گیا، اللہ کا دروازہ بند نہیں ہوا۔
بس جانا ہے۔
یا اللہ! ہماری ہر توبہ قبول فرما، ہر بار۔

رَبَّنَا ظَلَمْنَا أَنفُسَنَا وَإِن لَّمْ تَغْفِرْ لَنَا وَتَرْحَمْنَا لَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ (الاعراف:23)
اے ہمارے رب! ہم نے اپنے نفسوں پر ظلم کیا، اگر تو ہماری مغفرت نہ کرے گا، اور ہم پر رحم نہ کرے گا تو یقیناً ہم نقصان پانے والوں میں سے ہو جائیں گے۔
یہ دعا میری سب سے پسندیدہ دعاؤں میں سے ایک ہے۔ 
اللہ سبحانہ و تعالی جو ہماری شہ رگ سے بھی زیادہ قریب ہے حضرت آدم و حوا علیھما السلام کی پکار کا جواب یوں دیتا ہے:
فَتَابَ عَلَیۡہِ ؕ اِنَّہٗ ہُوَ التَّوَّابُ الرَّحِیۡمُ (البقرۃ: 37)
پس مہربان ہوا ان پر بے شک وہی توبہ قبول کرنے والا رحم کرنے والا ہے۔
یہ دعا مجھے سکھاتی ہے کہ اللہ ہم سے بہت محبت کرتا ہے۔ وہ نہیں چاہتا کہ ہمارا نقصان ہو۔ اللہ سبحانہ و تعالی کی ہم سے محبت کی دلیل اس سے بڑھ کر اور کیا ہو گی کہ غلطی انسان نے کی اور توبہ کے کلمات خود اللہ سبحانہ و تعالی سکھا بھی رہا ہے اور قبول بھی کر رہا ہے۔ فرمایا:
فَتَلَقّٰۤی اٰدَمُ مِنۡ رَّبِّہٖ کَلِمٰتٍ (البقرۃ: 37)
یہ دعا سکھاتی ہے کہ توبہ کی قبولیت کے لیے احساس ندامت شرط ہے۔ جس طرح گاڑی چلانے کے دوران اگر red light کا دھیان نہ رہے تو ایسا بھاری فائن لگتا ہے کہ اگلی بار جب گاڑی چلاتے ہیں تو خود بخود گاڑی سگنل پر آ کر نہ صرف یہ کہ رک جاتی ہے بلکہ yellow light کا بھی خوب دھیان رہتا ہے۔ اسی طرح زندگی میں جہاں غلطی ہو جائے لازم کہ فورا دل کا الارم بجے، خود پر ایک بھاری بوجھ محسوس ہے، اور پھر اس بوجھ کو اتارنے کی فکر میں انسان اپنے رب کی جانب رجوع کرے۔ استغفار کرے۔ 
یہ دعا مجھے کہتی ہے 'آؤ اپنے رب کی رحمت کی طرف!'۔ اللہ سبحانہ و تعالی مایوسی، نا امیدی اور گناہوں کے دلدل میں ڈوبے ہوئے اپنے بندوں کو رحمت کی طرف یوں بلاتا ہے:
وَ ھُوَ الَّذِیۡ یَقۡبَلُ التَّوۡبَۃَ عَنۡ عِبَادِہٖ وَ یَعۡفُوۡا عَنِ السَّیِّاٰتِ وَ یَعۡلَمُ مَا تَفۡعَلُوۡنَ (الشوری: 25)
اور وہی تو ہے جو اپنے بندوں کی توبہ قبول کرتا ہے اور انکے قصور معاف فرماتا ہے اور جو کچھ تم کرتے ہو وہ جانتا ہے۔
رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے فرمایا:
قَالَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ: أَنَا عِنْدَ ظَنِّ عَبْدِي بِي، وَأَنَا مَعَهُ حَيْثُ يَذْكُرُنِي، وَاللَّهِ لَلَّهُ أَفْرَحُ بِتَوْبَةِ عَبْدِهِ مِنْ أَحَدِكُمْ يَجِدُ ضَالَّتَهُ بِالْفَلَاةِ، وَمَنْ تَقَرَّبَ إِلَيَّ شِبْرًا تَقَرَّبْتُ إِلَيْهِ ذِرَاعًا، وَمَنْ تَقَرَّبَ إِلَيَّ ذِرَاعًا تَقَرَّبْتُ إِلَيْهِ بَاعًا، وَإِذَا أَقْبَلَ إِلَيَّ يَمْشِي أَقْبَلْتُ إِلَيْهِ أُهَرْوِلُ '.
'اللہ عزوجل نے فرمایا: میرے بارے میں میرے بندے کا جو گمان ہو میں اس کے ساتھ (مطابق ہوتا) ہوں اور وہ مجھے جہاں (بھی) یاد کرے میں اس کے پاس ہوتا ہوں۔ اللہ کی قسم! اللہ تعالیٰ اپنے بندے کی توبہ پر تم میں سے ایسے آدمی کی نسبت بھی زیادہ خوش ہوتا ہے جسے چٹیل بیابان میں اپنی گم شدہ سواری (سامان سمیت واپس) مل جاتی ہے۔ (میرا) جو بندہ ایک بالشت میرے قریب آتا ہے، میں ایک ہاتھ اس کے قریب آ جاتا ہوں اور جو ایک ہاتھ میرے قریب ہوتا ہے، میں دونوں ہاتھوں کی پوری لمبائی کے برابر اس کے قریب ہو جاتا ہوں اور جو چلتا ہوا میری طرف آتا ہے، میں دوڑتا ہوا اس کے پاس آتا ہوں۔'(صحیح مسلم، کتاب التوبہ، حدیث: 6952)

Allah, out of His infinite love and mercy,  not only wants me to repent but puts the words of du'a into my heart and mind to help me to do it. I'm going to commit sins - Allah created us in the knowledge that we would do that so I should never despair with any sin I commit because as long as I truly repent Allah has promised to forgive me - but that doesn't mean I should become complacent. I should strive constantly to do the right thing and  be a good muslim in everything I do, say and think and keep asking Allah for ihsan in everything I do - and to never show even an atom's weight of the arrogance that iblis shows to his Lord. This ayah gives me a sense of peace and hope because I know that Allah loves me and wants me to get to jannatul firdous and is making it easy for me if I truly strive for it. The fact that not only does Allah want me to repent but He inspires me with the du'a to do so, and also gives me so many beautiful du'a in the Qur'an that I can use is truly mind blowing subhanAllah.

When I read this verse, it feels something to me.

It is not only that Allah accepts Adam’s repentance. Adam did not even know how to repent until Allah taught him the words. That part stays with me, because there are moments when I feel guilty or distant, yet I do not even know what to say.

And still, At-Tawwab did not leave Adam to figure it out alone. He guided him first.

That makes it personal. When I feel the urge to say “Astaghfirullah,” or when my heart softens after I make a mistake, maybe that is not coming from me alone. Maybe that is Allah already turning to me, before I turn to Him.

It shifts the way I see things.

I am not the one who starts the return. He is.
And if He is the One who begins it, why would I think He wants to reject me?

So in those moments when I feel I have gone too far, or I fall into the same mistake again, I remind myself of this. The door is not just open. He is the One who is calling me back to it.

Subhan Allah, the beauty of the One Who reminds us to return to Him so that He accepts us. I often feel sad about the ease with which we commit sins, but then again, He forgives them easily too. Jazak Allah Khayran, it was an important reminder

Between a Question and Its Answer

On entering Surah البقرة (al-Baqarah — The Cow)

There is a moment — almost imperceptible — when, as you move through the Qur’an, you pass from asking into being answered.
It does not announce itself.  There is no clear boundary, no visible threshold. You turn the page, as you would in any book, and yet something in the atmosphere shifts — like stepping into a space that feels familiar, but somehow more attentive, more aware of you.
This is how Surah البقرة (al-Baqarah — The Cow) begins.

Before it, there was only a question.
In Surah الفاتحة (al-Fātiḥah — The Opening), the words are simple, almost unguarded in their clarity:
﴿ اهْدِنَا الصِّرَاطَ الْمُسْتَقِيمَ ﴾ (Ihdinā aṣ-ṣirāṭ al-mustaqīm — Guide us to the straight path) → الفاتحة 1:6
It is a request that does not yet reveal its full weight — one that is made with trust, before understanding what it might require in return.

And then — without transition, without explanation — comes the reply:
﴿ ذَٰلِكَ الْكِتَابُ لَا رَيْبَ فِيهِ هُدًى لِّلْمُتَّقِينَ ﴾ (Dhālika al-kitābu lā rayba fīhi hudan lil-muttaqīn — This is the Book… a guidance for the God-conscious) → البقرة 2:2
There is no argument here.  No gradual persuasion.
Only a statement that stands on its own — complete, and unconcerned with whether it is immediately understood.

A medieval scholar, الخُوَيِّي (al-Khuwayyī — a scholar of Qur’anic structure from the later classical period, known for his reflections on the coherence and arrangement of the surahs), captured this transition with a clarity that feels almost understated: 
“When they asked for guidance, it was said to them: This is the path you asked for.”

One might expect guidance to arrive gently.
As clarity. As lightness. As something that resolves rather than complicates.
But Surah البقرة (al-Baqarah) does not move like that.
It moves like a city.
Wide, structured, filled with streets that do not immediately reveal where they lead. There are laws, narratives, warnings, repetitions — details that seem, at first, almost excessive. You don’t pass through it quickly. You inhabit it.
And gradually, without being told, you begin to understand that guidance is not something you are given all at once.
It is something you are trained into.

جلال الدين السيوطي (Jalāl ad-Dīn as-Suyūṭī — 1445–1505 CE), a scholar who dedicated his life to tracing the inner structure of the Qur’an, writes:
“Every surah is an expansion of what came before it in summary.”
 Then الفاتحة (al-Fātiḥah) is not merely an opening.
It is a seed.
And البقرة (al-Baqarah) is what happens when that seed is allowed to grow.

What was once contained in a phrase begins to take on form.
Praise becomes remembrance:
﴿ فَاذْكُرُونِي أَذْكُرْكُمْ ﴾ (Fa-dhkurūnī adhkurkum — Remember Me and I will remember you) → البقرة 2:152
And mercy — once named — appears across situations,  sometimes where it is expected,  and sometimes where it is not.

In the story of آدم (Ādam — Adam), it follows error:
﴿ فَتَابَ عَلَيْهِ إِنَّهُ هُوَ التَّوَّابُ الرَّحِيمُ ﴾ (He accepted his repentance; indeed He is the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful) → البقرة 2:37
In the prayer of إبراهيم (Ibrāhīm — Abraham), it extends even beyond belief:
﴿ وَمَن كَفَرَ فَأُمَتِّعُهُ قَلِيلًا ﴾ (And whoever disbelieves, I will grant him enjoyment for a short while) → البقرة 2:126
Mercy, here, is not confined to expectation.
It moves more freely than that.

And then, almost unexpectedly, it appears within what might otherwise seem purely procedural:
 إِذَا تَدَايَنتُم بِدَيْنٍ … فَاكْتُبُوهُ ﴾ → البقرة 2:282
A verse about contracts. About writing things down. About precision.
Yet beneath its structure, there is something else —  it reveals itself as protection.
A form of care embedded into the fabric of daily life.

Guidance, then, is not confined to what is sacred in the narrow sense.
It enters everything.
Quietly, persistently.

And yet, there is a tension that runs beneath all of this.
A division.
Early in the surah, three types of people emerge — not as categories to observe from a distance, but as possibilities that linger uncomfortably close.
﴿ أُولَٰئِكَ عَلَىٰ هُدًى مِّن رَّبِّهِمْ ﴾ (They are upon guidance from their Lord) → البقرة 2:5
But others turn away.
Others hesitate.
Others see, and still do not follow.

And then comes a line that seems simple, but refuses to remain so:
﴿ هُدًى لِّلْمُتَّقِينَ ﴾ (Hudan lil-muttaqīn — guidance for the God-conscious) → البقرة 2:2
The Book is guidance.
But not universally received.
The same words, the same verses — and yet, not the same outcome.

At this point, the reading changes.
It is no longer only about understanding what the Qur’an says.
It becomes about what it does.

Guidance is no longer something external.
It becomes a question of readiness.
Of posture.
Of what the heart is capable of holding.

By the time the surah draws to a close, the language shifts again.
From instruction back into supplication:
﴿ رَبَّنَا لَا تُؤَاخِذْنَا إِن نَّسِينَا أَوْ أَخْطَأْنَا … ﴾ (Our Lord, do not take us to account if we forget or err…) → البقرة 2:286
It echoes the beginning.
Not identically — but recognizably.
As if the journey does not end with certainty, but with a deeper form of asking.

And perhaps this is the quiet architecture of it all:
الفاتحة (al-Fātiḥah) begins with a request.
البقرة (al-Baqarah) responds — not by simplifying the path, but by unfolding it.
And at the end, you find yourself asking again.
But not in the same way.

Because something has shifted.
Not in the words.
But in the one who reads them.

And so the question that remains is no longer:
Where is the path?
But something far more difficult to answer:
What, within me, is still resisting it?

Talking to Allah سبحانه وتعالى in a very personal way.
فتلقى آدم من ربه كلمات فتاب عليه إنه هو التواب الرحيم 

So Adam عليه السلام, seeking his Lord, being inspired with some words to come back to Allah سبحانه وتعالى

إنه هو التواب الرحيم  That Allah عز وجل accepts Adam عليه السلام as He turns to him in that very personal way.

The same names are used later on with Ibrahim عليه السلام: إنك أنت التواب الرحيم, that verily you are the acceptor of repentance, the especially merciful.

And so this idea that whether it is through a sin that you are repenting from or through a good deed that you hope there's acceptance of, you're turning back to Allah and saying, "Ya Allah, I'm presenting this to You so that I can be accepted by You, so that I can be brought closer to You."

And so it's, again, العالمين, and now you're going to see the harmony of it all coming together. So let's actually start with this. Let's start with the part of the coherence of it all under رب العالمين

Its human nature to commit sin. Allah knows we can be wrong doers.  However Allah taught man how to repent and seek forgiveness. Part of the reason He created us is for us to worship Him and to seek his forgiveness so He can forgive us.

I remember hearing once that when Allah uses a similar phrasing in a surah, especially in a long one like Al-Baqarah, He is trying to draw our attention to something. For the longest time I would read these two ayahs, specifically the last part- 'Surely He is the Accepter of Repentance, Most Merciful' and think to myself what could be the connection between these two? The Children of Israel (Bani Israel) made a grave mistake-shirk but Adam (as) did not mean to disobey Allah, he simply slipped and forgot. However, thinking deeper I could see a connection. Adam (as), our father made a mistake after knowledge had come to him. Bani Israel had seen multiple signs of Allah through the messenger- Musa (as). Both our father and Bani Israel erred after knowledge came to them. This got me thinking further of how connected these stories are. In Baqarah, we are first introduced to our origin story by Allah telling the angels of a new creation He was going to be placing on the earth starting with Adam(as). Bani Israel was meant to serve as a ummah showing people what it means to be a nation that follows and submits to Allah. Both Adam (as) and Bani Israel are in positions of where they were each chosen for a specific task (as Allah tells us later in Baqarah that He chose them over all other nations in their time). As Baqarah is the second surah, this is the first time one would read about the story of Adam (as) and Allah in His Divine Wisdom chose to tell us that He gave our father the names of all things (knowledge). It is very interesting that right after this, we read about the Children of Israel who pride themselves on having knowledge. Scholarship is a huge part of their tradition and many of them study for long hours in the day. It feels like with these two stories being side by side it is like Allah is telling them and us that whatever knowledge you have it shouldn’t make you arrogant as it comes from Allah and the father of all humanity was also given much more knowledge that what you or I have.

It reminds me of people of Hazrat Yunus A.S. These people were also forgiven after repentance when they had witnessed the signs of punishment.  

When Adam (alayhisalam) left Paradise, he came down with the provision (word from Allah) - Repentance 

So, consume your provision as much till you are here, for it can take you back Home.

Sinners who return to Allah , run to the Quran and often times begin reciting the Quran from the beginning. 

Isn't it amazing how  Allah is talking to that Muslim, who sinned and now opened the Quran on the first day of ramadhan that He is All forgiving , The Most Merciful. 

Allah mentions a few times that He is هو التواب الرحيم
Just like Adam our father, who was taught these words by Allah. Allah teaches these names of His to  Adam's children. 

Ya Rab don't let us leave this ramadhan , except that you have forgiven us. And had put love in our hearts to obey you.
