بِسْمِ ٱللَّٰهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
One of the key distinctions between a believer and a non-believer lies in their perception of reality—how they interpret the world around them and what they accept as truth. In today's world, we are living in an age dominated by logic, science, and material understanding. The dominant mindset, especially within academic and scientific communities, is rooted in positivism—a philosophy that holds that only what can be observed, measured, and empirically proven is real. For such minds, the truth is limited to what the eyes can see and what the hands can touch. If it cannot be tested, analyzed, or demonstrated through the five senses, it is often dismissed as irrelevant or untrue.
But the believer operates on a different paradigm. While acknowledging the role of reason and observation—as Islam itself encourages reflection on the signs of creation—the believer ultimately grounds their reality in the divine revelation of Allah (SWT). The believer trusts what Allah has conveyed through the Qur’an, even when it contradicts or transcends worldly logic or sensory experience.
This difference raises a vital question: What defines reality? Allah reminds us in Surah Al-Kahf (18:7) that the world is adorned as a test—to see who excels in deeds. The temporary nature of this life, its beauty and distractions, are not the final truth, but trials meant to reveal the sincerity of our faith. For the believer, real success lies not in outward achievements but in spiritual clarity, recognizing the world for what it is: a fleeting illusion designed to test our choices, character, and devotion to Allah.
Ultimately, the Qur’an teaches that the full reality will be unveiled on the Day of Judgment, when all illusions fall away, and only truth remains. This understanding gives a sense of Purpose, direction and significance. Therefore, for the believer, true vision lies not in physical sight but in insight—seeing with the heart, guided by the Qur'an and Sunnah. Faith (iman) is not the rejection of logic but its completion, rooted in divine wisdom that surpasses human limitation.
How it shifted my lens? There was a time I thought worldly material success was the only success. I lived a life of darkness, and no one ever highlighted it. But by His (SWT) mercy, He guided me to understand true success. The Qur’an showed me it's not about human standards, but what pleases Allah. Now I see life as a test, and real success is what lasts beyond this world.

Jazakallahu khairan kaseeran for wording such an inspiring knowledge, such principles are the promises of true successful Deen, and you spiritually connected such a huge unity and love, BarakAllahu feekum.!

I had a thought when reading this ayah today. 

When Allah tells us that He made things on the earth as attractive (as per the translation in the PDF version for the Divine Book Club), it was the choice of the word attraction that got me to think a bit deeper. Reading this ayah, my immediate thought is to think of things such as spouses, clothing, homes and the list could go on of both material things or even just the natural creation of Allah like the mountains, lakes, trees..etc. There are innumerous things that we have here on earth that Allah has beautified for us. 

When I thought about it a bit more, it reminded me of things that we don't usually think of. For example, say if you are really frustrated with a family member or friend and in the heat of the moment you have the opportunity to say something that you know will really hurt them. I'm sure we have all found ourselves in situations like this but what we forget is that in times like these we may feel 'attracted' to the idea of saying that hurtful comment in anger or may even feel 'attracted' to the idea of crossing a red line just to make a point; but in these moments we are also being tested to see if we will take the higher path- to speak good or remain silent as our messenger (SAW) said. 

May Allah make it easy for us to remember Him and to do deeds that pleasing to Him in both our good and difficult times, ameen.

Jazakallah khair for showing us a new perspective

The adornments of this world are both tangible and intangible. 

On a broader level, it's the natural physical beauty of the earth—the mountains, the rivers, the oceans that stretch endlessly, and then there are the man-made structures, beautifully proportioned, the cities and monuments that stand as a testament to human achievement. On a personal level, it’s status, career, money, children, all our possessions, even our spouse. 

Allah said that all the adornments of the earth are a test to see who does the good deeds. And it’s true; everything we hold dear, everything that seems to give us a sense of meaning or pride, is part of that test. This is the preamble before starting the story of the People of the Cave. Allah introduces the reality of this world, the fleeting nature of its beauty, and then the story goes on.

I find myself thinking, what would I have done if I had been in that age and time? Would I have had the courage to be one of those who left the city, abandoning everything they knew and loved for the sake of Allah? Or would I have stayed back, compromising my faith out of fear of the king or for the sake of preserving some worldly comfort?  

I wasn’t there. I wasn’t tested in that way. But I am being tested on another level, in my own time, with my own set of trials. I guess that's the nature of life for all of us. Everyone in this world is tested by what we love most, or what we are most tempted to have. 

I ask myself:

Am I lost in my pursuit of my adornments or am I conscious? 
Am I awake to my reality and aware of my test? 
Am I truly mindful of my Lord? 

Are you?

Out of all the things that are vying to attract your time and attention - the adornments - what are you going to choose? In every moment, the best deed is the one that best bears witness to Lā ilāha illā Allāh. One Ilāh - Allāh.  Not what feels better, not what sounds better, not what looks better, but what is most pleasing to Him, Subhanahu Wa Ta'alaa. A reminder to myself first.

While the adage 'this life is but a test' may not always resonate with us, its essence unveils profound truths. Deconstructing it reveals that our blessings, adversities, unique struggles, grief, and relational challenges are all trials. I have written slightly similar before, but today as I was listening to Surah Al Kahf it occurred to me that we are encouraged to recite this Surah each Friday, men (and women) attend Jummah and listen every Friday to a sermon. 

Some of us are constantly reminding ourselves of the Hereafter, but many of us are busy in our worldly commitments but nevertheless we gather together to pray but also to listen attentively and collectively in a group and gathering. The imam who will choose an important topic and who will remind us of our destination. Again as each Friday passes we head closer towards our exit from this worldly abode, whether we are young or old.

It is also significant the day of resurrection will also occur on a Friday. When it will occur is only known to Allah Almighty. 

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, 'The best day on which the sun has risen is Friday. Adam was created on Friday and on it he entered Paradise and on it he was expelled from therein. The Hour will not be established but on Friday.'

We are in constant need of being reminded about what is ahead of us. The day of Friday, is a huge mercy.

Then finally, the young men from the cave also shows us how easy it is for Allah to resurrect us and we will be asked about our deeds.

So these reminders are Allah’s constant reminders for the Ummah. Indeed He is most Merciful.

This life was created as a test and setbacks are bound to happen.
We generally assume that problems alone are tests, but Allah ﷻ says

‎إِنَّا جَعَلْنَا مَا عَلَى ٱلْأَرْضِ زِينَةًۭ لَّهَا لِنَبْلُوَهُمْ أَيُّهُمْ أَحْسَنُ عَمَلًۭا
Indeed, We have made that which is on the earth adornment for it that We may test them [as to] which of them is best in deed.
(18:7)

reminding us that tests are not only through difficulties but through blessings as well. 

Yes, hardships are tests and become a catalyst of growth and self-development, but when we look at the blessings of others and sometimes wish for the same things, we should not be envious of them, reminding ourselves that those very blessings might be what they are being tested with.

And each person's blessing is what Allah has apportioned to him. 

‎وَرَبُّكَ يَخْلُقُ مَا يَشَآءُ وَيَخْتَارُ ۗ مَا كَانَ لَهُمُ ٱلْخِيَرَةُ ۚ
Your Lord creates and chooses whatever He wills — the choice is not theirs.
(28:68)

It may be that you will receive the same or more at a different time, either in this world or the next. 

When we receive a blessing like a better job or an increase in provision, we may lose empathy and judge those with less. This blessing then becomes our test. When we are in difficulty, that very hardship could be the thread that's helping us hold onto our faith.

Whether it’s education, a better job, a spouse, kids... the list goes on - Allah ﷻ has chosen what is best for you, what is best in your journey. 

‎وَعَسَىٰٓ أَن تَكْرَهُوا۟ شَيْـًۭٔا وَهُوَ خَيْرٌۭ لَّكُمْ ۖ وَعَسَىٰٓ أَن تُحِبُّوا۟ شَيْـًۭٔا وَهُوَ شَرٌّۭ لَّكُمْ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ وَأَنتُمْ لَا تَعْلَمُونَ
Perhaps you dislike something which is good for you and like something which is bad for you. Allah knows and you do not know.
(2:216)

May Allah grant contentment in our hearts and make us content with what has been decreed for us. آمين

Allah is testing you all the time...

You are unaware that you are being tested 

Difficulty alone is not a test 

He tests how you behave in good times too. Your good health/bad health, richness/poverty, happy/sad moments, Knowledge/ignorance - all are from His tests 

'[He] who created death and life to test you [as to] which of you is best in deed - and He is the Exalted in Might, the Forgiving' [Qur’aan 67:2]

'And it is He who created the heavens and the earth in six days - and His Throne had been upon water - that He might test you as to which of you is best in deed' [Qur’aan11:7]

'Indeed, We have made that which is on the earth adornment for it that We may test them [as to] which of them is best in deed' [Qur’aan 18:7].

If you are in ghaflah (unaware) of being tested, how will you pass it? 

May Allah give us tawfeeq.

I love the part where you understate that every situation can be seen as a test.

1. Good Health

Will you be grateful and use your health for good, or will you take it for granted and engage in sinful or wasteful activities?

Example: A person in good health may either use their strength to worship, help others, and do righteous deeds, or indulge in arrogance and forget their dependence on Allah.

2. Bad Health

Will you remain patient, seek Allah’s help, and stay steadfast in faith, or will you become resentful and complain?

Example: Someone suffering from an illness might turn to Allah with sincerity and increase in faith, while another might question, 'Why me?' and lose trust in Allah’s wisdom.

3. Richness (Wealth & Success)

Will you be generous, humble, and use wealth for good, or will you become arrogant and hoard it?

Example: A wealthy person might donate to charity and help the needy, earning immense rewards, while another may become proud, greedy, and ungrateful.

4. Poverty (Financial Struggles)

Will you remain patient, trust in Allah, and avoid unlawful means, or will you resort to dishonesty and despair?

Example: A struggling person might work hard and rely on Allah while maintaining integrity, whereas another may turn to theft or lose hope in Allah’s mercy.

5. Happy Moments

Will you be thankful to Allah and acknowledge that your blessings come from Him, or will you forget Him in your joy?

Example: Someone who achieves success may either express gratitude by remembering Allah or become heedless and distant from faith.

6. Sad Moments

Will you have patience and seek comfort in Allah, or will you fall into hopelessness and despair?

Example: A person who loses a loved one may either turn to prayer and seek solace in Allah’s plan or question fate and lose faith.

7. Knowledge (Wisdom & Intelligence)

Will you use your knowledge for good and share it, or will you become arrogant and mislead others?

Example: A scholar can either teach and guide others sincerely or use knowledge to manipulate and mislead for personal gain.

8. Ignorance (Lack of Knowledge)

Will you seek knowledge and strive to improve, or will you remain heedless and neglect learning?

Example: A person who doesn’t know much about Islam can either make efforts to learn and practice or remain indifferent and reject guidance.

 I think of myself as a scientist and, therefore, clearly see the overwhelming evidence for evolution. And as a Muslim I have no inherent conflict between science and faith. Evolution and creation are not mutually exclusive. The point I'd like to emphasize is that if evolution was happening without a creator behind it, why would it create something that's beyond functional, i.e. beautiful? 
When beauty is a purpose in itself as mentioned in the Quran, we know who's in charge of the whole thing.  

The "DNA" of Surah Al-Kahf

Have you ever wondered why Surah Al-Kahf tells these specific four stories? This Friday, I realized that the opening verses (5–8) aren't just an introduction—they are the "Thesis Statement" for every trial (case studies) that follows. If we understand the Intro, we understand the Tests of Life.

1. The Test of "Adornment" (Verse 7)
Allah tells us: "We made what is on earth an adornment (Zinah) for it, to test them..." 
The Youth (The Cave): They PASSED. The young men lived in a society likely obsessed with this "adornment"—festivals, idols, status, and perhaps the luxury of the city. They traded the zinah of the world for the rahmah (mercy) of Allah in the cave.
The Rich Man (The Gardens): He FAILED to see it as zinah (a temporary test). Instead, he saw it as eternal reality. He said, "I do not think this will ever perish" (18:35). He mistook the "decor" for the foundation.
The Townspeople (Musa’s Story): They FAILED. When Musa and Khidr asked for food, the townspeople were so attached to their "adornment" that they lacked basic hospitality. They prioritized their material comfort (the zinah of their food and wealth) over the "best of deeds" (hospitality/charity). They failed to realize that their hoarded wealth would eventually become "barren soil."
Dhul-Qarnayn (The King): He PASSED. Allah gave him "adornment" in the form of means to travel east and west and conquer lands. Verse 7 says the purpose of this adornment is to see "who is best in deeds." Dhul-Qarnayn understood this. Instead of hoarding power, he used it to help the weak (building the wall) and punish the oppressors. He transformed zinah into amal (action).

2. The "Barren Soil" Reality Check (Verse 8)
Allah warns: "And indeed, We will make that which is upon it [into] a barren ground."
The Youth of the cave "saw past the illusions." While their people were captivated by the zinah of the city and its false gods, the youth realized this was all temporary. They chose a rough, dark cave over the "beautiful" city because they knew the city's beauty was fleeting (sa'idan juruzan - barren soil in waiting), while faith was everlasting.
The Gardens: This happened literally! The man's lush garden was destroyed and reduced to slippery ground ("sa'idan zalaqan" 18:40). The intro gave the warning; the story gave the proof.
The Wall (Musa’s Story): The wall was crumbling into "barren soil" (decaying). This teaches us that physical structures—no matter how strong—eventually decay (Verse 8). However, the righteousness of the father (a "best deed") was the only thing that had a lasting impact, prompting Allah to send a Prophet (Musa) and a mysterious servant (Khidr) who acted to preserve what was truly valuable (the orphans' rights/inheritance). Only deeds done for Allah survive the "barren soil" phase of this world.
Dhul-Qarnayn: Even after building a massive iron wall, he humbled himself and said: "When the promise of my Lord comes, He will make it level (dust [18:98])." He knew even his greatest work would return to the earth.

3. The Test of "Speaking Without Knowledge" (Verse 5)
Allah warns against those who speak about Him without knowledge.
The Youths made a prayer in the cave—"Prepare for us from our affair right guidance" (18:10)—was essentially a request to navigate through the glittering "adornment" of their society without losing their souls. 
The Rich Man: Just as the disbelievers in Verse 5 claimed God has a son without knowledge, this man made a massive theological claim without knowledge: "I do not think the Hour is coming" (18:36). Both the polytheists in the intro (18:4) and the rich man in the story based their beliefs on conjecture and ego, not on evidence. They spoke about the Unseen (God's nature, the Afterlife) with zero authority.
Prophet Musa (AS): This establishes that knowledge belongs to Allah, and assuming otherwise is dangerous. Even a great Prophet was tested here! When asked "Who is the most knowledgeable?", Musa (AS) replied "I am". While he was a Prophet and technically correct regarding revealed knowledge (Sharia), he spoke without encompassing all knowledge (like the Unseen/Ghayb). Prophet Musa's journey was a divine correction to teach him that "Above every possessor of knowledge is a Knower" (12:76). He had to humble himself to learn from Al-Khidr, a servant who had knowledge Musa did not possess.
Unlike the Gardener who said "I have more wealth," Dhul-Qarnayn constantly referred back to Allah. When he built the massive iron wall, he didn't say "Look at my engineering." He said, "This is a mercy from my Lord" (18:98).

Note: This is a reflection, and a reminder to myself first. It’s easy to read these stories as "history," but they are actually a mirror.
Am I blinded by the "adornment" of my job or social media?
Do I remember that everything I own will one day be "barren soil"?
Do I have the humility to admit I don’t know everything?
May Allah make us like the Youth and Dhul-Qarnayn—people who see past the "decor" of this world and focus on being "Best in Deeds."
