وظللنا عليكم الغمام وانزلنا عليكم المن والسلوى كلوا من طيبات ما رزقناكم وما ظلمونا ولكن كانوا انفسهم يظلمون

وَظَلَّلْنَا عَلَيْكُمُ ٱلْغَمَامَ وَأَنزَلْنَا عَلَيْكُمُ ٱلْمَنَّ وَٱلسَّلْوَىٰ ۖ كُلُوا۟ مِن طَيِّبَـٰتِ مَا رَزَقْنَـٰكُمْ ۖ وَمَا ظَلَمُونَا وَلَـٰكِن كَانُوٓا۟ أَنفُسَهُمْ يَظْلِمُونَ

The reality behind Manna

I recall discussing in my Tafsir class the ayaat in Surah al-Baqara about Manna and Salwa. My Tafsir of choice is Al-Qurtubi's Al-Jami' li-Ahkam al-Qur'an. These two ayaat are one of greatest insights into the mentality of internalised self hate and inferiority and ingratitude of the Israelite. The words they utter to Musa (as) at this time of perfect provision is like lightening that strikes the heart of the Muslim today who is surrounded by consumerist culture. Its more than being 'grateful for Allah (SWT) 's ni'ma' its the about the central concerns that we live for in our day to day lives, the criterion we use between surviving and living.   

Why we dont like ourselves 

There is a characteristic, a psyche and a lens that is created within this consumerist culture of greed and endless sensorial pleasure and we often dont realise it. A famine of contentment has spread across these lands. 

At the same time, the running theme in these ayat throw the frequent questions about what it really means to be oppressed, to be free and to be just to one's self and others. As a result, the paradigm many use to understand our condition today is often partial to the Quranic message but not in full submission to it. These days we find a problem (something we don't like) and then we reach over to find an ayah to back it up.  We measure our revival purely on our socio-economic and political standards alone -or purely on the religious bond of prayer and fasting. Apolitical religiosity or a-religious polity -an unappetising binary for anyone serious about their Deen. 

The main role of Capitalism is not to recognise the human need for ownership, or to incentivise the individual, nor to distribute wealth through increase in production and commerce. Rather its main role is to serve the need to have distinction without the concept of God. 

Anyway, the firaunic mind that has possessed the Israelites of that time, its causes in the absence of resistance, from forbidding evils to enjoining upon one another patience as a method are discussed in upcoming ayaat. 

And Allah (swa) knows best

Compare his attitude with the companions of Rasool Allah saw who would travel in the desert heat for battles , eating leaves of trees when they run out of food, and would sometimes chew the date seed all die to satisfy their hunger and with that never complained or asked the Prophet SAW to ask Allah swt to send down blessings from the sky.

The Fading of Wonder 
Reading Al-Baqarah (2:57–2:59) through the Hadith

After fear came relief. 
Shade after exposure
. Provision after exhaustion.

وَظَلَّلْنَا عَلَيْكُمُ الْغَمَامَ وَأَنزَلْنَا عَلَيْكُمُ الْمَنَّ وَالسَّلْوَىٰ 
“And We shaded you with clouds and sent down to you manna and quails...” (2:57)

I find these verses are striking not because they describe the people abandoned after failure — but people still being cared for.

Even after doubt.
 Even after collapse. 
Mercy continues arriving.

And perhaps that is what feels so deeply human about this passage: 
how easily the extraordinary settles into the unnoticed.

The shade becomes ordinary. 
Provision familiar. 
Even sacred words begin to lose their weight.

And perhaps this is why the next verses feel so unsettling to me.
The Qur’an describes people being told to enter with humility and speak words of repentance:
وَادْخُلُوا الْبَابَ سُجَّدًا وَقُولُوا حِطَّةٌ
“And enter the gate humbly and say: ‘Relieve us of our burdens.’”—  2:58
But then the verses say:
فَبَدَّلَ الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا قَوْلًا غَيْرَ الَّذِي قِيلَ لَهُمْ
“But those who wronged changed the words from what had been said to them...”
— 2:59

At first, the change appears almost subtle —
a word altered,
a sacred instruction no longer held with the same care.

Yet something in the verses leaves behind a quiet sense of loss.

While the classical tafsīr describes this alteration as deliberate mockery,
perhaps one of the things that also lingers in these verses for me
is the gradual fading of attentiveness toward what is sacred.

The Prophet ﷺ once spoke these words to companions living through very unequal conditions — some with comfort, others with almost nothing:
«انْظُرُوا إِلَىٰ مَنْ هُوَ أَسْفَلُ مِنْكُمْ، وَلَا تَنْظُرُوا إِلَىٰ مَنْ هُوَ فَوْقَكُمْ، فَهُوَ أَجْدَرُ أَلَّا تَزْدَرُوا نِعْمَةَ اللَّهِ عَلَيْكُمْ»
“Look at those below you and do not look at those above you, for that is more likely to prevent you from belittling the favors of Allah upon you.” — (Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, 2963)

I keep thinking that maybe this is part of what these ayahs uncover: 
not only the loss of gratitude,  but the slow habit of no longer seeing what is already surrounding us.

So much of life becomes a search for meaning somewhere ahead of us —
 in another place, 
another version of life, 
another achievement, 
another arrival.

But the Qur’an so often redirects the gaze: 
back to what is already here.
Shade in the desert. 
Food descending from the sky. 
The quiet miracle of being sustained again after failing.

And perhaps that is also why moments of sincere ṣalah 
feel so transformative to me: 
not because the world changes around us,
 but because the noise within us briefly quiets.

And when it does, 
even ordinary things begin to appear differently — 
the cool breeze against your skin, 
light moving through trees,
 the endless forms of greenery, 
a stranger offering salam on the street.

It is as though closeness to Allah does not pull us away from creation, 
but returns us to it with clearer sight.

Perhaps one of the deepest forms of heedlessness  is not that mercy disappears —
 but that the heart becomes too distracted to notice it.

And then the Qur’an says:
وَمَا ظَلَمُونَا وَلَـٰكِن كَانُوا أَنفُسَهُمْ يَظْلِمُونَ 
“And they did not wrong Us — but they were wronging themselves.” — 2:57

As though the deepest loss was never the blessing itself, 
but the quiet fading of a heart once able to recognize mercy 
while still surrounded by it.

And maybe that is why to me deep  meaning in the Qur’an is rarely presented as something hidden in the distance —
 but something already surrounding us, 
waiting simply to be noticed again.
