What’s your relationship with disappointment? 
With empty promises? 
With expectations that never became reality? 

As my neighbors decorate for Christmas, it reminds me of a time when my mom started a tradition of outlining the shape of a Christmas tree on our wall with lights. Beneath it, she wrapped about fifteen to thirty empty boxes.

When people visited, they always commented on how creative it was and how blessed her kids were to have so many presents. Sometimes she’d tell them the boxes were empty. Sometimes she wouldn’t.

When my siblings and I first saw them, we were surprised and excited until we found out we were actually not getting anything. It was all “decoration.” That disappointment was one of many I experienced as a kid, and it shaped the way I moved through life. 
I became risk-averse. I avoided opportunities that felt too big and bold. I clung to the promises of others, hoping this time they’d actually mean what they said.

I lowered my expectations to the floor just so people could meet them and when they still didn’t, it taught me that no one cared about disappointing me. No one cared enough to show up as they said they would.

So it was a relief to discover ayat like: 
“ Honour ˹your˺ pledges, for you will surely be accountable for them.” (17:34)
“Why do you say what you do not do?” (61:2) 
“And do not break your oaths after confirming them.” (16:91)

It confirmed what I always intuitively knew: promises are meant to be kept to the best of your ability, especially to a child. Every empty promise creates a breakdown of trust that compounds over time.

When it came to trusting Allah ﷻ with His promises, I clung to them the same way I clung to the promises of people, though this time was different. This time, trusting His promises actually transformed my life for the better.

I did go through a phase when I felt disappointed in the qadr of Allah ﷻ (which I mentioned in a previous reflection https://quranreflect.com/posts/40838), but Allah ﷻ pulled me out of it by showing me that the disappointment came from limited beliefs shaped by my past. I had to relearn what trust truly looks like. I had to begin living in alignment with Allah’s promises. And that began with shifting from a mentality of lack to one of abundance.

Living in Allah’s promises requires expecting the good He says He will send. 
Expect open doors. 
Expect guidance. 
Expect provision. 
Expect help in ways you never anticipated. 
“I am as My servant thinks of Me.” Hadith Qudsi (Sahih al-Bukhari)

These expectations come from the many places in the Qur’an where Allah ﷻ explains how He subjected the earth and everything in it for us. Everything is here to benefit us and help us along our journey back to Him. 
We can either use them or waste them. 
“Do you not see that Allah has subjected to you whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth, and amply bestowed upon you His favors, both apparent and unapparent?” (31:20)

The Qur’an is filled with ayat showing that believers truly have the upper hand.

So why do we look at someone else’s provision and then at our own as if we’re the ones in lack? 
Your worth is not reflected in your bank account. Your true net worth is your rank with Allah ﷻ. 
Where your attention goes, your energy follows. And focusing on what you don’t have or want leads straight to ingratitude, discontent, inadequacy and eventually doubting the truthfulness of Allah’s promises.

Aligning with Allah’s promises begins with knowing them and alhamdulillah, the Qur’an is full of them:
 
“Remember Me and I will remember you.” (2:152) 
“There isn’t a creature on the earth whose provision isn’t guaranteed by Allah.” (11:6) 
“Do not be of those who forgot Allah, for He made them forget themselves.” (59:19) 
“As for he who gives and fears Allah and believes in the best reward, We will ease him toward ease.” (92:4–7) 
“And whatever you spend of good - it will be fully repaid to you, and you will not be wronged.” (2:271–272) 
(Subhanallah, I can keep going.)

Then you must believe them fully. 
Not according to what you see, but according to what Allah ﷻ says. 
What you see is limited. What He promises is eternal. 
“Whatever you have will end, but what Allah has is everlasting.” (16:96) 

Allah ﷻ refers to the Qur’an as “the rope of Allah” because it’s meant to be clung to at every moment. 
“And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided.” (3:103)

Then you act upon that belief. 
Some of Allah’s promises, like the coming of the Day of Judgment, are absolute and unconditional. 
“Our Lord, surely You will gather the people for a Day about which there is no doubt. Indeed, Allah does not fail in His promise.” (3:9)

But most of His other promises require a state of being or an action from us. A type of investment.

 “Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is within themselves.” (13:11) 
If you want your condition changed, change what’s within yourself. 

“If you’re grateful, I will surely give you more.” (14:7) 
Be grateful and He’ll give you more to be grateful for. 

“Whoever is mindful of Allah, He will make for him a way out and provide for him from where he cannot expect.” (65:2–3) 
Increase your taqwa and He will provide for you in surprising ways.

You’re not meant to, nor capable of, doing everything. You’re meant to show up for what actually matters and encouraged to take the actions that align with His promises.

When you know His promises, believe in their truth, and fulfill your part of the deal with iman, yaqeen, and radical tawakkul, you will receive what He promises to give. 

“And whose word can be truer than Allah’s?” (4:122) 
“And who is truer in statement than Allah?” (4:87) 
“Surely Allah’s promise is ˹always˺ true, but most of them do not know” (10:55)

Whatever the dunya taught you about disappointment does not apply to Allah ﷻ. Trust me, I have lived the difference. And surely, you have too.

“Call upon Allah while being certain that your du‘a will be answered.”

Bismillah 

The Qur’an shows that the story of humanity is the story of covenants. Before time and history, Allah gathered every soul and asked: 'Am I not your Lord?' and we all replied: 'Yes, we bear witness' (7:172). That first covenant is written into our nature. Whether we remember it or not, we are bound to it.


From there, covenants continued through prophets and nations. Allah entrusted Banī Isrā’īl with pledge after pledge: 'Hold firmly to what We have given you' (2:63), 'Worship none but Allah, be good to parents, orphans, the needy…' (2:83). Yet they turned away, breaking their promises, distorting His words, and hardening their hearts: 'So because of their breaking of the covenant, We cursed them and hardened their hearts' (5:13). Even their Sabbath was a sign of covenant, but they transgressed and were disgraced (2:65). Their failure was not from weakness but from arrogance, choosing pride and power over faithfulness.


Over the prophets, Allah placed the heaviest covenant of all. In Surah al-Aḥzāb He says: 'And when We took from the prophets their covenant, and from you, and from Nūḥ, Ibrāhīm, Mūsā, and ʿĪsā son of Maryam; We took from them a solemn covenant' (33:7). This mīthāq ghalīẓ was to carry His message no matter the cost. And they fulfilled it. Nūḥ called his people for centuries though mocked. Ibrāhīm stood firm when cast into fire. Mūsā faced Pharaoh with only a staff. ʿĪsā was rejected but never abandoned his mission. Muhammad ﷺ bore the final and greatest burden, guiding humanity until the end of time.


By contrast, the hypocrites of Madinah showed the other face of covenant. They pledged loyalty but failed when tested: 'They had already promised Allah before not to turn their backs, and a promise to Allah will be asked about' (33:15). Unlike the prophets who honored the heaviest covenant, they could not keep even the lightest. Their betrayal was not from arrogance like Banī Isrā’īl, but from weakness—a faith so shallow it collapsed in fear.


The Qur’an shows that every community, every person, stands in this story. Even we, the Ummah of Muhammad ﷺ, are not outside it. Allah says: 'Indeed, Allah has purchased from the believers their lives and their wealth in exchange for Paradise' (9:111). That is our covenant: to give ourselves for His sake, and to receive Jannah in return. Every prayer, every repentance, every shahāda is a pledge. Even marriage is called a mīthāq ghalīẓ (4:21), a solemn covenant. And over all of this hangs the Trust: 'We offered the Amānah to the heavens and the earth and the mountains, but they refused to bear it and feared it. Yet man undertook it—indeed he was unjust and ignorant' (33:72). That Trust is our freedom, our responsibility, our accountability.


So the pattern runs unbroken: the first covenant of all souls, the covenants of nations, the pledges of prophets, the failures of hypocrites, and the daily promises of our own lives. Allah’s reminder is simple and unchanging: 'And fulfill the covenant, for the covenant will be asked about' (17:34).


For me, these verses gather into a single question: when my turn comes, will I be like the prophets who stood firm, or like those who broke their pledges? The Qur’an shows that history is still unfolding, and I am part of it.


So I end with a prayer: Ya Allah, make me true to the covenant You took from me before I was born. Do not let arrogance harden my heart, or fear make me weak. Grant me the strength of the prophets, the loyalty of the truthful, and the honor of meeting You with a promise kept.

Are Jews only held to their sabbath prior to Quran? It is not for us to restrain from work on Saturday that’s from their scriptures. What does Allah bless be upon his name. Now wish.  Quran is final prophesy so do they still have their covenant or laws. How come the Sabbath violators aren’t punished now? Or the keepers rewarded. If monkey state was temporary punishment or example are there people still call Jews monkeys and apes as reference/ reminders?
