Ma'arif al-Qur'an Tafseer: At-Tawbah Ayah 4
الا الذين عاهدتم من المشركين ثم لم ينقصوكم شييا ولم يظاهروا عليكم احدا فاتموا اليهم عهدهم الى مدتهم ان الله يحب المتقين ٤
إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ عَـٰهَدتُّم مِّنَ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ ثُمَّ لَمْ يَنقُصُوكُمْ شَيْـًۭٔا وَلَمْ يُظَـٰهِرُوا۟ عَلَيْكُمْ أَحَدًۭا فَأَتِمُّوٓا۟ إِلَيْهِمْ عَهْدَهُمْ إِلَىٰ مُدَّتِهِمْ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُحِبُّ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ ٤
إِلَّاﱾ
ٱلَّذِينَﱿ
عَٰهَدتُّمﲀ
مِّنَﲁ
ٱلۡمُشۡرِكِينَﲂ
ثُمَّﲃ
لَمۡﲄ
يَنقُصُوكُمۡﲅ
شَيۡـٔٗاﲆ
وَلَمۡﲇ
يُظَٰهِرُواْﲈ
عَلَيۡكُمۡﲉ
أَحَدٗاﲊ
فَأَتِمُّوٓاْﲋ
إِلَيۡهِمۡﲌ
عَهۡدَهُمۡﲍ
إِلَىٰﲎ
مُدَّتِهِمۡۚﲏﲐ
إِنَّﲑ
ٱللَّهَﲒ
يُحِبُّﲓ
ٱلۡمُتَّقِينَﲔ
٤ﲕ
Behalve met de veelgodenaanbidders met wie jullie een verbond zijn aangepan, (en) die jullie daarna niets tekort hebben gedaan en die niemand tegen jullie hebben geholpen. Komt dan het verbond met hen na, tot het eind van de overeengekomen termijn. Voorwaar, Allah houdt van de Moettaqôen.

6. The sixth ruling comes out from the fourth verse where Muslims have been prompted to fulfill their pledge right through the end until the term of the peace treaty expired. Immediately thereafter, the verse has been concluded with the sentence: إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ الْمُتَّقِينَ (Surely, Allah loves the God-fearing). This gives a clear hint to the advice that Muslims should observe utmost precaution in fulfilling the pledge they have given. They should never look for lame excuses and far-fetched interpretations only to find a way to contravene treaty obligations, as done by nations at large.
