واذ اخذنا ميثاقكم ورفعنا فوقكم الطور خذوا ما اتيناكم بقوة واذكروا ما فيه لعلكم تتقون

وَإِذْ أَخَذْنَا مِيثَـٰقَكُمْ وَرَفَعْنَا فَوْقَكُمُ ٱلطُّورَ خُذُوا۟ مَآ ءَاتَيْنَـٰكُم بِقُوَّةٍ وَٱذْكُرُوا۟ مَا فِيهِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُونَ

Let us ponder the lesson of the mountains.

The people of Thamud carved magnificent homes into mountains, feeling secure in their strength, until they were destroyed by their arrogance.

When Musa (A.S.) asked to see Allah, he was told to look at a mountain. When Allah revealed Himself to it, the mountain crumbled to dust.

When the Flood came, Nuh’s disbelieving son sought refuge on a mountain, believing it could save him. Yet he drowned, while Nuh sailed upon waves as high as mountains.

Allah reminds us throughout the Qur’an that He placed mountains as stabilizers for the earth, allowing us to live, travel, and build upon it in safety.

Yet despite their immense power, Allah says that if there were a recitation capable of moving mountains, it would be the Qur’an (13:31). And if this Qur’an had been sent down upon a mountain, it would have split apart in awe and fear of Allah (59:21).

Mountains appear immovable. They tower above us, provide stability beneath us, and can crush us in an instant. Yet before Allah, they are humble.

And on That Day:

“The mountains will be blown away, becoming like a mirage.” (78:20)

A reminder that even what seems permanent is fleeting. Even what seems solid will vanish.

So ask yourself:

Is your heart harder than a mountain?

Allah says:

“Even then your hearts became hardened like a rock or even harder, for some rocks gush rivers; others split, spilling water; while others are humbled in awe of Allah. And Allah is never unaware of what you do.” (2:74)

The mountains submit.

The rocks are humbled.

What about you?

The Qur’an shows that the story of humanity is the story of covenants. Before time and history, Allah gathered every soul and asked: 'Am I not your Lord?' and we all replied: 'Yes, we bear witness' (7:172). That first covenant is written into our nature. Whether we remember it or not, we are bound to it.


From there, covenants continued through prophets and nations. Allah entrusted Banī Isrā’īl with pledge after pledge: 'Hold firmly to what We have given you' (2:63), 'Worship none but Allah, be good to parents, orphans, the needy…' (2:83). Yet they turned away, breaking their promises, distorting His words, and hardening their hearts: 'So because of their breaking of the covenant, We cursed them and hardened their hearts' (5:13). Even their Sabbath was a sign of covenant, but they transgressed and were disgraced (2:65). Their failure was not from weakness but from arrogance, choosing pride and power over faithfulness.


Over the prophets, Allah placed the heaviest covenant of all. In Surah al-Aḥzāb He says: 'And when We took from the prophets their covenant, and from you, and from Nūḥ, Ibrāhīm, Mūsā, and ʿĪsā son of Maryam; We took from them a solemn covenant' (33:7). This mīthāq ghalīẓ was to carry His message no matter the cost. And they fulfilled it. Nūḥ called his people for centuries though mocked. Ibrāhīm stood firm when cast into fire. Mūsā faced Pharaoh with only a staff. ʿĪsā was rejected but never abandoned his mission. Muhammad ﷺ bore the final and greatest burden, guiding humanity until the end of time.


By contrast, the hypocrites of Madinah showed the other face of covenant. They pledged loyalty but failed when tested: 'They had already promised Allah before not to turn their backs, and a promise to Allah will be asked about' (33:15). Unlike the prophets who honored the heaviest covenant, they could not keep even the lightest. Their betrayal was not from arrogance like Banī Isrā’īl, but from weakness—a faith so shallow it collapsed in fear.


The Qur’an shows that every community, every person, stands in this story. Even we, the Ummah of Muhammad ﷺ, are not outside it. Allah says: 'Indeed, Allah has purchased from the believers their lives and their wealth in exchange for Paradise' (9:111). That is our covenant: to give ourselves for His sake, and to receive Jannah in return. Every prayer, every repentance, every shahāda is a pledge. Even marriage is called a mīthāq ghalīẓ (4:21), a solemn covenant. And over all of this hangs the Trust: 'We offered the Amānah to the heavens and the earth and the mountains, but they refused to bear it and feared it. Yet man undertook it—indeed he was unjust and ignorant' (33:72). That Trust is our freedom, our responsibility, our accountability.


So the pattern runs unbroken: the first covenant of all souls, the covenants of nations, the pledges of prophets, the failures of hypocrites, and the daily promises of our own lives. Allah’s reminder is simple and unchanging: 'And fulfill the covenant, for the covenant will be asked about' (17:34).


For me, these verses gather into a single question: when my turn comes, will I be like the prophets who stood firm, or like those who broke their pledges? The Qur’an shows that history is still unfolding, and I am part of it.


So I end with a prayer: Ya Allah, make me true to the covenant You took from me before I was born. Do not let arrogance harden my heart, or fear make me weak. Grant me the strength of the prophets, the loyalty of the truthful, and the honor of meeting You with a promise kept.

 Reading Al-Baqarah (2:63–2:64) through the Hadith

There is something almost overwhelming in the imagery of these verses.

وَإِذْ أَخَذْنَا مِيثَاقَكُمْ وَرَفَعْنَا فَوْقَكُمُ الطُّورَ 
“And [recall] when We took your covenant and raised above you the Mount...”— 2:63

The classical tafsir describes this as a moment of immense fear and gravity —
 a covenant taken under the shadow of the mountain itself.

And yet, after all of this, the Qur’an says:
ثُمَّ تَوَلَّيْتُم مِّنۢ بَعْدِ ذَٰلِكَ 
“Then you turned away after that.”—2:64

To me, these verses feel less like a story about rejection, and more like a reflection on how fragile the human heart can be after moments of clarity.

Because sometimes people really do feel changed in certain moments.
A powerful reminder. 
A difficult prayer. 
A night of sincerity. 
A moment of fear, awe, or closeness to Allah.

And for a while, everything feels different.
But then life slowly returns. 
The noise returns.
 And the clarity of the moment begins to fade.

The Prophet ﷺ once said:
«إِنَّ الْإِيمَانَ لَيَخْلَقُ فِي جَوْفِ أَحَدِكُمْ كَمَا يَخْلَقُ الثَّوْبُ»
“Faith wears out within one of you just as clothes wear out.”
— al-Ṭabarani in al-Muʿjam al-Kabir

The hadith continues by encouraging believers to ask Allah to renew faith within their hearts.
And perhaps that is part of what these ayahs leave behind.

Not every distance from Allah begins with open rejection. 
Sometimes the heart grows tired. 
Distracted. 
Slowly dimmed by repetition, noise, and forgetfulness.

There is another hadith that keeps coming to mind while reading these verses:
«أَحَبُّ الْأَعْمَالِ إِلَى اللَّهِ أَدْوَمُهَا وَإِنْ قَلَّ»
“The most beloved deeds to Allah are those that are consistent, even if small.”
— Sahih al-Bukharīi 6464; Sahih Muslim 783

Perhaps because transformation was never meant to depend on intensity alone.
The mountain itself was not raised above them forever.

And maybe that is what feels so deeply human in these verses: 
how difficult it can be to carry sincerity from one moment into the next,
 to remain inwardly awake after the feeling itself fades.

Yet the passage does not end with destruction.
It ends with mercy.
وَلَوْلَا فَضْلُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَتُهُ لَكُنتُم مِّنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ
 “And if not for the favor of Allah upon you and His mercy, you would surely have been among the losers.” — 2:64

As though the Qur’an quietly reminds us that 
human beings are not sustained by the strength of their hearts alone,
 but by the mercy of Allah 
continuing to return them to Him, 
again and again.

Ayat 59-73

Ayat 59-73 Allah reminds the Israelites how they were not just ungrateful at the same time extremely disrespectful, and they had the audacity to mock Allah is so many ways, that again in the presence of a Prophet. They ridiculed Allah's orders, tried to humiliate Allah's messenger. 

They received the blessings and rejected saying those were not good enough. Yet Allah granted what they wanted through His prophet. 

Amidst all these in Ayat- 62, Allah mentioned those among the nation who followed Allah's command and they have nothing to fear. 

This is the similar situation today. Non-believers and a portion of us who identify as believers, we fail to recognise Allah's blessings. We complain. Yet Allah continues our sustenance. And among us there are still people who are grateful servants of Allah. May Allah allow us to be from of the grateful ones.
