حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَآ أَتَوْا۟ عَلَىٰ وَادِ ٱلنَّمْلِ قَالَتْ نَمْلَةٌ يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّمْلُ ٱدْخُلُوا۟ مَسَـٰكِنَكُمْ لَا يَحْطِمَنَّكُمْ سُلَيْمَـٰنُ وَجُنُودُهُۥ وَهُمْ لَا يَشْعُرُونَ

Surah An- Naml ( The Ants ) .
Whenever I read An- Naml , I always get struck by the very beginning of the surah . The  name itself An- Naml caught my attention. What's the wisdom behind naming a surah after Ants? Why  would Allah Tallah mention Ants ? These  questions often came to my mind .Until today I paused for 5 minutes and started reflecting on it . But before sharing  my reflection, I want to mention something important. My Qur'an teacher always says , 'The Quran talks to us , whenever we face problems or confusion, it tells us the solution, gives answers , guides us and shows us the right path.' 
I always used to open Quran with this thing in mind whenever I land into any kind of trouble. And today exactly the same happened , I was going through  a tough time in life and as I began reading this surah, the very beginning struck me and I could relate to it instantly . Al Hamdulillah.
Now, coming back to what I learnt from the surah's name and the beginning verses ;
1. Allah Tallah has  named the surah after ants and ants are one of  the smallest creatures on earth.We could barely see their eyes or features . And Allah Tallah still listened to them which means absolutely nothing on this earth got unnoticed by Allah Tallah. He loves his creation so much that he listens to everyone.Just like Allah Tallah listened to the ants .
In verse number 18; 
حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَآ أَتَوْا۟ عَلَىٰ وَادِ ٱلنَّمْلِ قَالَتْ نَمْلَةٌۭ يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّمْلُ ٱدْخُلُوا۟ مَسَـٰكِنَكُمْ لَا يَحْطِمَنَّكُمْ سُلَيْمَـٰنُ وَجُنُودُهُۥ وَهُمْ لَا يَشْعُرُونَ
 (And when they came across a valley of ants, an ant warned, 'O ants! Go quickly into your homes so Solomon and his armies do not crush you, unknowingly.')
There is wisdom behind this verse . I repeat Allah Tallah mentioned this incident just to tell us that He swt  listens to everybody , if it's something as tiny as ants but he listens. 
So dear reader , if Allah Tallah listens to ants why would He swt  not listen to our prayers?
2. It also  teaches me to respect  and value every creation of Allah, big or small , human or animal , for each has been granted importance by Creator himslef.
In essence this verse fills me with gratitude , humility and trust that nothing is beyond Allah's attention and mercy.Even an Ant's voice mattered, and so does mine.

I repeatedly asked God about my purpose in life.

I pleaded, cried, and begged for an answer, desperately wanting to know why I am here and what I am meant to do. 

My heart ached for a sign or revelation to guide me.

In my search for answers, I came across the stories of the ants, bees, and the hoopoe in the Quran. These stories opened my eyes to a profound truth: no purpose is insignificant. 

In Surah Al-Naml, the story of the ants illustrates their diligence and teamwork. 

The bees, highlighted in Surah An-Nahl, demonstrate the beauty of their creation and the benefits they provide to humanity. 

The story of the hoopoe in Surah Al-Naml shows its role as a crucial messenger. 

Often, we aspire for grand achievements, believing that if we cannot change the world in some monumental way, our efforts are meaningless. But these small creatures taught me that greatness lies in fulfilling our unique roles, no matter how small they may seem.


Each of us is a part of the grand scheme of time and space. Our lives, our actions, and our roles are interwoven into the intricate web of existence. 

Like the ants, bees, and hoopoe, we all have a place and a purpose. 

A parent nurturing their child, 
a teacher educating the next generation, 
a farmer growing food, 
a friend offering a listening ear—
all these roles are vital. 

None of us is a glitch in the fabric of time. 

Understanding this has given me peace and clarity, knowing that my purpose, no matter how small it may appear, is essential and meaningful.

May Allah guide us to understand and fulfill our unique roles in life. May He grant us the wisdom to recognize the importance of our actions, no matter how small, and the strength to carry them out with sincerity and dedication. Ameen.

Ants are very social and cooperative creatures. The level of care and altruism that each individual ant has for the good of the collective may even put humans to shame.


Not only do they try to alert and protect the colony against danger, as we see in Surah 27:18, but some ants (the worker ants) even perform a routinely and preemptive self-sacrifice (i.e. 'preemptive' because there is no detectable threat yet).


One study on this finding explains:


'When external activity ends at the close of each day, a small group of workers seals the nest entrance from the outside with sand or soil. Because at night-time the external environment proves fatal to them, these workers effectively condemn themselves to death. This behaviour differs from previously-described forms of defensive self-sacrifice, like the stinging behaviour of honey bee workers, because it is not facultative: it does not arise in direct response to danger, but occurs routinely as a defence in anticipation of a possible threat. In the words of the researchers, it is pre-emptive self-sacrifice.'

So now, a lesson that we can take for ourselves is: try to avoid killing small flies, insects, bugs, ants, etc. that you may see occasionally (especially outdoors) unless you feel that they are harmful or genuinely annoying. It's better to leave them alone or perhaps (if they are inside the house) let them out the window by gently picking them up or open the door so that they can get out. There is no need to kill them every single time. 


However, the problem is that many people tend to kill them unnecessarily. And not only is it unnecessary and perhaps even disliked in Islam (you can google that for more info), but oftentimes they take delight in crushing them and killing them. After eagerly running around and crushing one of them, there is a smile on their face, a feeling of achievement for killing it.


And these days there are lots of instruments that you can buy which motivates bug-killing behaviors. For example, there's a bug spray called 'Bug-A-Salt 3.0' which is shaped like a mini shotgun and squirts a fast jet of salt at the targeted animal when the trigger is pulled. And there is a 'Bug Zapper Racket' which is designed in the form of a tennis racket and produces a light electric jolt when a bug comes into contact with it.


And children will go to the backyard just so that they can use these fun instruments and kill bugs and insects wherever they can find them. And, of course, they do it because their parents also do it and they were taught by them that this is nothing bad. 


But, going back to ants specifically, I had another reflection.


After learning about the care and dutifulness that ants have towards each other, it reminded me of the Palestinians who are being killed in great numbers.


They are like the ants - even though they are undergoing this horrible massacre and tragedy by the hands of the oppressors, they are still resilient and united, cooperating with one another and trying their best to help each other, because they are holding firmly to the rope of Allah; their unity and their resolve as one brotherhood is unshakable and the world is admiring them.


'And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not be divided.' (3:103)

بسم اللّٰہ الرحمٰن الرحیم

This verse and specially this incident of ant in the Quran helped me in understanding some attributes of Allah SWT more. Although what I feel is deeper than what I am able to write here, I pray I make sense to everybody reading this. Ameen. 

Allah, Al-Khaliq
Allah SWT mentions an ant’s incident in His glorious book. I read in Shaykh Mohammad Elshinawy’s reflection that this ant was not a special ant of its group but an ordinary one. [1] It’s ‘an ant’, not ‘the ant’. So it is just another ant and still it is mentioned by Allah SWT Himself, in His final book! He is Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatever lies in between them, yet His Kalaam includes mention of a creature so small? This verse made me think about this attribute of Allah, Al- Khaliq, the best to create, who never leaves His creation alone, who never neglects them, never forgets them, even if that creation is an ant!  

Allah, Al- Khabeer
This is another attribute of Allah, that came to my mind while reflecting on this Ayah. Allah is Al-Khabeer, The All Aware, The Fully Aware. Nothing is beyond the scope of His Knowledge. He is completely aware about ALL OF HIS CREATION in ALL OF THEIR MATTERS, even if the creation is an ant and it is talking to the fellow ants, Allah has full awareness of this too. 

Allah, As-Samee
This attribute of Allah means, The All Hearing One. His mercy is limitless and His attribute of being All Hearing is not bound to what we consider as ‘important’. He is All Hearing for all of the creation.  
Once I asked one of my coworkers to remember me in her dua when she prays tahajjud. Like a reflex action, she replied, ‘As if my duas are accepted!’ I could sense satan’s trick here. When he cannot stop a believer from praying and trying to get closer to Allah SWT, he tries to make him feel unheard. People keep on praying but they don’t believe they are being heard by As-Samee. While talking to her, this ayah came to my mind and I thought, if an ant is heard by Allah SWT, even when it is talking to its fellow ants and not Allah directly, how can a human being, then a Muslim, then an obedient servant of Allah, then someone who is praying directly to Him, be unheard? Thinking about the ayah in this way gave me so much relief.   

Allah, Al- Lateef 
If we look around and reflect on Allah’s creation, we see perfection, accuracy and much precision. Even the tiniest creatures or the smallest structures inside the living beings, the cells, are so complex in nature. You can easily find some documentaries on internet to get a glimpse of an ant’s amazingly complex lifestyle and the way they work together. This intricate aspect of Allah’s creation can only be seen if we try to reflect on Allah’s Ayaat, and ant is also one of the signs for me now! 
Sr. Jinan Yousef says in ‘Names of Allah Series’, 'So the practical exercise to understand these Names is to take some time and truly reflect on the beauty and creation of this world. One way is by stepping outside and simply seeing. And the second way is to understand how things work' 'If we do not reflect, we take things for granted. Even praying without reflecting and devotion becomes monotonous.' [2] I loved her beautiful explanations of Allah’s attributes and I am adding the link to her article, below. 

Tiny is not trivial!
Sometimes, if we ponder over Allah’s Ayaat (or signs) in the Quran, they can completely change our perception of so many things around us, that we think we know best. Reflecting on Ayaat of Quran, sometimes, gives us a paradigm shift!
Thinking about this verse, I came to realize that most of us are conditioned to believe that tiny is synonymous with trivial. So when it comes to our perception, sometimes, small things are hardly noticed and we, unknowingly, miss to experience them and appreciate them. We are able to unlearn this pattern of thinking through our conscious efforts and only then we can be able to change our focus and better our perception of the world around us. When we no longer view little things in our lives as insignificant, our lives can be filled with contentment, gratitude and above all it can increase us in our knowledge of Allah SWT. It comes to my mind that just like an ant, so tiny but not at all trivial, there are so many signs from Allah, in our lives that are unnoticed and hence not appreciated at all!

While watching the stories of animals related to Sulayman AS, the very thing that touched my heart is the linguistic style of the Qur'an. The speech of animals which is presented in this surah is remarkable and goes right to the heart. Personally, I can't describe my entire emotions and feelings like Qur'an describes the emotions and concerns of animals in the Qur'an. Also, while listening to the Surah along with translation, I tried to pause after every ayah and these arose some questions. Interestingly, the answer to the question was in the following ayah....

Why are ants so significant that Allah mentioned them in His book???

Ants are social insects. They have their own social behaviour that is so fascinating. They make and live in their home together without fighting (for power, food or equality), harming, blaming, belittling, being depressed or bored or addicted or ………

They are not just surviving but thriving in such an unfriendly world because of their unity and loyalty towards their duty. In Japanese the word ants written by joining two letters one means insects and the other means loyalty.

I often wander why Allah mentioned the ants in this ayah?? If we read the previous and following ayahs there is no connection found with ants specifically. But He didn’t put the word ants without any purpose!!! 

I think He wants us to check with their lifestyle, know about them so that we may know their and our Creator, Sustainer. So that we can take lessons from them. 

But it seems we never treat them as significant as Allah treats them, so that we could take a look at those beautiful creatures of Allah, the most merciful.

Very cool about the Japanese lettering.  Amazing stuff! I adore ants and the bees too. Ah heck! I love all of the creation. Subhannallah.  Oftentimes my duaa is 'Ya Rab , protect me from your creation. ' Subhannallah.  Especially the tiny, stinging ones! Mashaallah!

#The_story_of_the_ant

The verses of the Qur'an are a source of information for linguists.  Allah (swt) reveals all the extraordinary information through some verses, some simple stories or conversations that seem very ordinary.  For example, look at the following verse where Allah (swt) has given us a lot of information about ants through a single word of a female ant:

And when they reached the valley of the ants, an ant (female) said, 'O ants! enter your houses, so that Solomon and his army may not crush you without understanding.'  (26:18)

You'll think it's like a children's story book!  What did Allah (swt) tell us about the ants here?

First, ants do not speak human language.  They communicate with each other through chemical signals.  Here's how the female ant interacted with the other ants that day, Allah says in the Qur'an what it stands for in human language.  Without that, if he gave us a graph of the chemical reaction, surely we would not have any benefit?

Now notice how much information Allah has given us about ants in this verse:

★ 'An ant (female) said' - the ant here is the female sex, not the male sex.  Outside the house there are female ants, not male ants.  Now, we know that female ants are worker ants, while males survive only for breeding [1] work.

★ 'O ants' - plural, meaning that a female ant can point to more than one ant at a time.  Ants are sensitive to a chemical called pheromones and by this they interact with each other [2].  Also, some species of ants communicate with nearby ants by making near-field [3] sounds.  Thus an ant can signal to more than one ant at the same time.  In this verse, Allah uses 'said', which is also used when people speak.  Which means ants may communicate using words just like humans do.  Even a few years ago, scientists thought that ants could not make a sound and did not have the ability to hear sound.  But it has recently been discovered that some species of ants can communicate with nearby ants using very low frequency sounds.

★'Enter your houses' - ants have more than one house.  An ant nest consists of many attached houses and certain ants live in certain houses.  The female ant knows that if the ants enter the house, they will not be harmed.  The ant house is a wonder for architects and a remarkable example of civil engineering.

 ★'So that Solomon' - the female ant recognized the Prophet Solomon.  Which means the female ant can recognize one of the many people.  Pheromones are also released from the human body.  It is thought that the female ant may have identified him with the pheromone signature that came out of Prophet Solomon's body, just as a dog can recognize every human being.  It is also worth noting that female ants may signal danger in advance.  That is, they have so much intelligence that they can anticipate danger.

 ★'And his army' - the ant realized that an army was coming.  Ants can feel the ground vibrating with their feet.  That is why they can understand from a distance if someone is coming towards them.  When a force walks together it creates a massive vibration in the ground.

★'May not crush you without understanding' - The female ant already knew that Prophet Solomon and his army would crush the ants without understanding.  So the female ant can understand in advance the nature of the danger by reviewing the condition of her surroundings.

 In this verse, Allah (swt) has given many hints for the scientists.  
—First, the ants that live outside the home are all female ants.  Male ants are always indoors.  All staff ants wives.  
—Second, how an ant communicates with thousands of ants through chemicals and odors, which is a highly successful means of transmitting information reliably.  
—Third, how thousands of ants got into the signal and entered the house in a matter of seconds with very little collision, which gave scientists an idea to improve the vehicle traffic system.  
—Fourth, the intelligence of each ant alone is small, but thousands of ants collectively have a higher intelligence called 'swarm intelligence.'  
—Fifth, ants have no social class structure.  They have no team leader.  
How thousands of ants do their work in an orderly manner without the control of a team leader. It is still a great surprise that everyone can do their own work without the control of a king or queen ant, and research has been going on for the last twenty years.  If man could create such an advanced mechanical system that does not require any central control system and every part of a huge machine would always do the right thing by itself, then engineering could solve many problems.

Perhaps this is why Allaah says:

 Who made every one of His creations beautiful [perfect]..... (32: 7)

 Whenever there is a conversation in any verse of the Qur'an, you will see that Allah (swt) gives us this information through the words of the conversation, the sentences:

 ★Number of speakers, nature, knowledge, mentality.

 ★Number of listeners, nature, knowledge, mentality.

 ★The relationship between the speaker and the listener.

 ★What happened before the conversation and what will happen after a lot of time.

 ★The condition of the surroundings, the context.  The role of those around you.

Sometimes the smallest creatures carry the loudest lessons.

The earth holds them quietly: ants, birds, bees. each living by laws we rarely notice, each a sign of the One who made them.

Ants are among the tiniest creatures visible to our eyes. We can unknowingly step on one without even realizing.

This verse I am talking about never ceases to humble me.

Because to me, it isn't just a story of Prophet Sulaiman's gift. It is a reminder of Divine attention, how even the smallest voice is received in the highest heavens.

When an ant that's so small, almost unseen spoke,  her voice was heard by a Prophet, and preserved in His Book to be remembered until the end of time as a sign.

“When they came upon the valley of the ants, an ant said: ‘O ants, enter your dwellings, lest Sulaiman and his hosts crush you while they perceive not.’”

(Surah An-Naml, 27:18–19)

For me, this verse isn't just about a miracle, it is also about  Divine attention. The Lord who manages galaxies also listened to an ant.

This verse isn't just about a miracle of language or Prophet Sulaiman's gift. It's also about how Allah dignifies even the smallest creation with awareness, care, and purpose.

And sometimes, when I whisper in the  dark, unsure if anyone understands the language of my fears, I remember that ant.

Tiny, unseen, unheard by the world but  yet she was heard by the King of all kings.

When an ant so tiny, unseen beneath our feet — could speak, be heard, and have its words preserved forever in the Qur'an, then no voice is too small for Him to hear.

So however tiny your worth may seem among the dwellers of earth or in this vast universe, Allah listens to you too.

Not just listens, but understands.

Not just understands, but provides.

Not just provides, but guards.

And hence, However small I feel in this endless creation, I know He listens. He understands. He provides. He guards.

No voice is too small for the One who heard an ant.

Ants, an insignificant creature in our eyes, but Allah heard it and mentioned what it said in the Quran. 
This made me realize that if an ant was heard, then how can I even began to imagine that Allah hasn't heard me. The reality is that no one hears you like Allah does. He listens to the minute details of my issues. He just doesn't hear my concerns or problems but know 'every single turbulence of my heart'. He hears those feeling which I was not able to verbally express and also those about which I am myself  unaware of. 
Allah is always with you He never leaves you. It's just that we fail to realize 'وَهُوَ مَعَكُمْ أَيْنَ مَا كُنتُمْ - He is with you wherever you are' His company and presence is with us 24/7.
