اياك نعبد واياك نستعين

إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ

This single verse captures the essence of a believer's life.

The first part, "You alone we worship" is a declaration of purpose. It reminds us that every act of worship is directed solely to Allah. The second part, "And You alone we ask for help" is a declaration of dependence. It teaches us that while we take the necessary means, our hearts rely only upon Allah. 

Every day, in every rak'ah of our salah, at least seventeen times, we declare to Allah:

"You alone we worship."

We were created to be servants of Allah. A servant follows the will of his Master, not his own. Yet how often do our lives reflect this declaration?

"Iyyaka na'budu" is not limited to prayer, fasting, or zakah. Every action done sincerely for Allah and in accordance with His guidance is an act of worship. A believer does not worship Allah only in the mosque. His entire life is meant to be an act of worship.

Yet many of us leave the mosque and leave this declaration behind. We stand humbly before Allah in prayer, but outside the mosque we become careless in our dealings. We speak lies, break promises, cheat in business, wrong others, backbite, and let our desires dictate our actions. We remember Allah while praying, but forget Him when making decisions throughout the day. If "Iyyaka na'budu" is true upon our tongues, it should also be evident in our character. 

Then we say, "You alone we ask for help". Yet how often do we truly live by these words?

Many of us complete our prayer, recite a few memorized supplications almost unconsciously, and immediately immerse ourselves in the affairs of this world. We plan, strive, and rely upon our own abilities and the people around us, while Allah often becomes our last resort instead of our first refuge.

Only when every door appears closed, when every worldly means has failed, and when we realize that no one can help us except Allah, do we raise our hands with complete sincerity. At that moment, our hearts become humble, our tears become genuine, and our du'as become heartfelt because we finally recognize our absolute dependence upon Him.

Then Allah, out of His infinite mercy, relieves our hardship. Yet how quickly we return to our old ways. We become occupied once again with the means and forget the One who created the means. We place our trust in our wealth, our plans, our careers, and the people around us, until another trial reminds us of the truth we recite every single day.

It is also remarkable that Allah mentions worship before seeking help. He is teaching us that the greatest assistance we should seek is not for worldly success, but for the ability to worship Him sincerely and remain firm upon His guidance.

No matter how capable we think we are, we cannot obey Allah without His help. Likewise, no matter how weak we feel, we are never helpless as long as we turn to Him.

O Allah, make us Your true servants. Grant us sincerity in our worship, steadfastness in our obedience, and complete reliance upon You alone. Ameen

Verse of the Week (Quran 1:5) 

                                                                                       إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ
                                            (You ˹alone˺ we worship and You ˹alone˺ we ask for help)

Surah Al-Fātiḥah reminds us that true worship is inseparable from sincere reliance upon Allah alone.

Imam Rashid Rida (RA) states:

And we seek refuge in Him alone, and we ask for the help that completes our actions and leads them to their intended fruits from Him alone, glory be to Him, and from no one else. For no one has power over that which lies beyond the ordinary means granted equally to all human beings except the Causer of causes and the Lord of all lords. Thus, His saying: “And You alone we ask for help” completes the meaning of His saying: “You alone we worship.” For seeking help in this sense is the heart’s turning in distress to Allah and the soul’s attachment to Him,  and this is the essence of worship.

Therefore, if a servant directs this to anyone other than Allah Most High, it becomes a form of idolatrous worship, which was widespread at the time of revelation and before it. It was specifically mentioned so that the ignorant would not imagine that seeking help from those whom they took as protectors besides Allah, and calling upon them for matters beyond the ordinary means available to people, is the same as seeking help from other people in ordinary worldly means.

Reflect:

1. Where does my heart turn first when I face hardship — to Allah in sincere reliance, or to created means alone?

2. How can I balance taking worldly means while recognising that all outcomes ultimately come from Allah, the Causer of causes?

3. In what areas of my life do I need to deepen the meaning of “You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help” so that my worship and reliance are truly directed to Allah alone?

Recently I was studying Bu Ali Sina metaphysical work where he divides the existence into two realms. ممكن الوجود and واجب الوجود . In the first category he places all the physical word, all our life  experiences and emotions which are contingent and need Divine will to be into existence...  And واجب الوجود is Allah alone, the One who exist without being submissive to any will or command... The one who is free of All . But then I was reflecting how often we replace one with another. We know He is Al-Qadeer yet we're consumed by our fears, we know He's Al-Hakeem yet we doubt His Hikmah when we face the unwanted outcome.. we know He is Ar-Razzaq yet we pursue to please others for material securities.... we keep our tongue moist with these mentioned ayaat  yet we fail to actualize them when our heart has misplaced Al-Wajib  with mumkinat... I think- Allah knows the best- the taqdeem in these verses (اياك) is particularly for such hearts , Allah SWT opens His Kalam to us through these very verses reminding us to redirect our hearts before we enter His Word. May Allah SWT allow us to redirect our hearts  in the direction He has chosen for us.
 و حيث ما كنتم فولوا وجوهكم شطره

“It is You we worship, and it is You we ask for help.”

In a world that constantly demands our energy, attention, and public output, it is incredibly easy for the heart to become overwhelmed by the noise of daily life. 

Sometimes, the weight of trying to hold everything together can lead to a quiet sense of exhaustion. We slip into the mindset that we must rely entirely on our own resilience, our own intellect, and our own internal strength to get through the day.

But this ayah for me, serves as an anchor and relief. 

Our internal connection with Allah must always precede our external actions. We cannot truly navigate the trials of this world or protect the sincerity of our hearts if our vertical relationship with the Creator is neglected.

It is a daily declaration that we are inherently weak, but He is Al-Qawiyy (The All-Strong). It frees the soul from the exhausting burden of trying to control every outcome or please people, reminding us that the strength to stand firm does not come from within ourselves - it comes entirely from Him.

When we lift our heads from prostration, we do not face our responsibilities in isolation; we face them with the unyielding support of the Lord of the Worlds.

Standing firm in a chaotic world does not mean never feeling weak - it means knowing exactly where to take that weakness to have it transformed into absolute strength. By placing my trust entirely in Him, my heart finds its sanctuary, my boundaries remain unshakeable, and my soul finds the quiet courage to keep serving, keep building, and keep moving forward. For when we truly have Allah, we have everything we will ever need. حَسْبُنَا اللَّهُ وَنِعْمَ الْوَكِيلُ

This is a thoughtful and heartfelt reflection that stays focused on the meaning of the ayah while drawing practical lessons for daily life.

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Recently i watched a documentary on Brain as it is always a fascinating subject for me as well as  a part of my study. I was amazed how this 1.5kg approx organ in our body is not just extremely significant part of us but it defines who we are "the self". How this mysterious organ perform complex operations so brilliantly with such a fine design that make us different from other creatures. The different parts of our brain carry all of our emotions, feelings, speech, memories, intelligence infact belief & upbringing, that shapes our personality as whole. We describe our philosophy of life through this unified functions happening within our brain. If any single-tiny neuron of the brain get out of balance or injured, the rest of the body will get effected. In some cases, the personality of a person transformed completely. سبحان الله 

          Now the trending topics of current time is "to rewire your brain ". Many experiments have been conducted on how the brain is "a self-living modified system.  It has the capacity to heal the truma or pain, to reshape itself through the process of "Neuroplasticity"; means repeated mental activities can actually change the brain structure. If we repeat something again and again our brain adapt physically to it, that's why therapy, cognitive training and meditation are highly recommended practice nowadays. 

       My mind blown up by how we rewire our brain five times a day. What a mercy of our Rab that we repeat Surah al-fatiha seventeen times daily in our obligatory prayers alone. No-matter what we feel happy or distress, how much busy our schedule is, with family, work or people, when we hear call of azaan we leave everything and for 10-15 min we pause and remind ourselves (YOU ALONE we worship). Who's YOU : The nurturing-master of all the world, The ever loving & caring, The master of the day of judgement. In our daily life we carry so many stress, anxiety, deep silence and isolation in order to fit in this world without realising we actually lose our freedom. Every time we recite this aayah, We are declaring our independence by giving our self to be in slave to him alone and denying any nauce of the false slavery. Be it (trend pressure, peer pressure, cultural pressure, family pressure or false propaganda pressure). The combination of exclusivity and emphasis (YOU ALONE) remind us how significant is our relationship with Allah swt. Ustadh mentioned in concise commentry that, "Allah doesn't command here : worship me rather it is a Communication" . We are literally talking to Allah swt ( YOU ALONE we worship). Imagine how this repeated practice have positive impact on our brain and by large implications how this, beautifully shape our behaviour and personality.

Right after that , we recite اياك نستعين (YOU ALONE we asked for help). 
    Brain experts say that we have to take action and create the environment first in order to motivate our brain for achieving our goal. Every time we pray we first remind ourselves who we are worshipping, through our action then we  immediately ask for help without specifying what kind of help. Each and every one has their own difficulties and we are helpless at various level from spritual, mental or physical. Many times we feel so depressed and helpless that we don't even know what we actually want.  Here again we remind ourselves, it's (YOU ALONE) we seek help because only you know what actual help we are in need of. Ustadh mentioned that (نستعين)this seeking help means we put our efforts first then we ask for help. سبحان الله what a correlation between the two.  No doubt why Surah al-fatiha is known as As-Shifa(The Cure), as there are many miraculous healing hidden behind it. If we are mindful of our repeated revealed practices and sincerely ask Allah swt, we truly heal ourselves.
 May we heal from our darkest truma and may we become source of light for others. 🤲🤲
    

Jazakumllaahu khayran. Alhamdulillah that even for the efforts He asked of us,we still  need His help . So we need and we ask His help before, during and after the efforts.

When you say: “You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help,” what attachments, fears, or unhealthy dependencies might Allah be inviting you to gently loosen your grip on?

  Over time, I have gotten significantly better at not worrying about the approval or disapproval of others. It used to be something that ruled my life. All I ever cared for was the validation from others. Now that I have been guided to Islam, the approval and validation that matters the most to me is from Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala. When I ask for Allah's help, I am asking him to guide me back to him and allow me to drop the things I am carrying that I do not even need to be carrying. I do not wish to carry them either. 

  This is a gentle daily reminder that no matter what I rely on in my life, the most reliable is Allah. I will continue to place my struggles in his care. I try to control the outcome of many things, but I do what I can do and let him handle the rest. When I let go of self-soothing habits that do not serve me and turn to Allah, my heart feels lighter. 

So absolutely beautiful and heart touching ! 

Reflecting on إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ often makes me question the sincerity of my own heart. It is easy to say that we worship Allah alone but sometimes our desires take a place we don’t realise they have taken. We convince ourselves that the things we long for are for the sake of Allah but when they do not come to us, our hearts become restless and disappointed. In those moments, this verse gently confronts me with an uncomfortable truth: was my heart truly attached to Allah or to the outcome I hoped He would give me? True worship means that Allah remains the center, even when our desires are not fulfilled. It means trusting that whatever path He chooses is already the one that will bring us closest to Him even if it looks different from the life we imagined for ourselves.

This verse reminds me what true reliance on Allah really means. It is the complete surrender of the heart, recognising that no matter how much effort I put into something, success will never come without His help. I can plan, strive and try my best but the outcome is always in His hands. Looking back at my life, there have been moments when I begged Allah for things that felt completely impossible, situations where I couldn’t see a way forward. Yet somehow Allah made a path where I saw none. It reminds me that what feels impossible to me is effortless for Him. This verse gently brings my heart back to that truth: I strive but ultimately I rely on Allah alone because everything becomes possible when He wills it.

When the people of Ibrahim A.S saw the condition of their idols, they asked each other to burn him to avenge for and help the idols. Those idols  became their liability that they had to help them, underscoring the fact that they cause no benefit or harm on their own. Whereas a believer in His worship asks Allah to help, in our lives and livelihood, for our dreams and aspirations, for our health and hope, in this world and the next.

Allah Ta'ala commanded us to make Him our wakeel , disposer of affairs.  Those who said Hasbun Allah were returned with favours, 

 There is no comparison for Him
 عـٰلم الغيب والشهادة الكبير المتعال 
 
Sometimes the trials we face seems unsurmountable, we feel overwhelmed and hopeless. The problems, the sickness, our own weaknesses may be intense,   but the Quran reminds us we have a Powerful and loving Rabb, He is aware of everything and and whoever trusts Allah, He Subhan Ta'ala suffices him.

Ultimately what Allah wills, will happen inevitably so leaving things in the care of Allah,  having good hopes from Him, focusing on the greatness of Allah , Trusting him and Tasbeeh becomes a source of comfort bi' iznillah.

Among the things that troubled me was praying while being distracted. When I prayed, all my movements matched exactly those of a person in prayer, but my thoughts were not truly in the prayer. So I began to think about how I should improve my prayers and be more focused.

I started by wanting to understand the meaning of the words spoken in the prayer. I learned them all, and each time I recited them I concentrated even more, because not only was I reciting them, but I was also meditating on them,from the very first word “Allahu Akbar” to the last “Assalaamu ‘alaikum warahmatullah.”

But especially the verses of the Qur’an: Each time I listened to a passage recited by the Imam, I would later search for that passage and learn its meaning. That way, if the Imam recited it again, I was sure I would not miss its meaning and could learn much from it.

What touched me deeply in my journey was the day I began to meditate directly on the verses during prayer. After learning about the importance and meaning of Surah Al-Fatiha,especially the supplication:

“Guide us to the straight path.” (Qur’an 1:6)

every time I thought of it, I felt at peace, hoping for Allah’s guidance.

Then one day, after Surah Al-Fatiha, the Imam immediately recited the second surah, Al-Baqara. Allahu Akbar! At that moment I was stunned.

In my mind I said: “Just after we asked Allah to guide us, He immediately shows us the guidance in the very next surah, and makes it clear that it is the Qur’an.”

“This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allah.” (Qur’an 2:2)

The Qur’an is the answer to every request we make in Surah Al-Fatiha during each prayer. Therefore, the Qur’an is not only a book from Allah, but a guide for every believer who wants to be among the rightly guided.

After understanding this, I decided to surround my life with the Qur’an, hoping to be among those rightly guided by Allah’s mercy. I decided to learn Arabic, to read and memorize the Qur’an, but above all, to meditate on it and practice it as much as I can.

Bismillah 

I awoke from my slumber, and the world no longer felt the same. Life’s hours appeared fragile, fleeting, whispering of an end I had ignored. In that awakening, thought rushed in: Why am I here? What is my end? Reflection sharpened my sight, and with insight I saw what I had been blind to — that there is nothing safer, nothing sweeter, than returning to Allah.


So I made my resolve, and I bound my will to Him. I walked carefully, for I knew He sees me, and I tried to keep my steps upright and steady. Yet I faltered, and every falter pushed me back to penitence. I repented again and again, tasting both the fear of His displeasure and the hope of His mercy. Fear restrained me from sin, hope carried me when despair tried to drown me, and in between those two wings my heart began to fly.


A longing stirred — a yearning to be near Him. Love grew from that longing, love that made obedience light and disobedience bitter. In trials, I sought contentment; in blessings, I offered gratitude. I tried to be truthful with myself, to strip my deeds of show, to clothe my soul in sincerity. Shame before Him became my guard, patience became my rope, detachment loosened the grip of the world, humility quieted my pride, and trust taught me to rest my burden on His decree. It was then that I realised: my true identity is servitude, and there is no honour beyond it.


But servitude is a discipline. I held myself to account, measuring each day before the scales of tomorrow. I disciplined my heart when it strayed, striving against the self that resisted me. I kept watch like a guard at a frontier, blocking the whispers that crept in. I polished my manners, knowing that good character is the fruit of a sound heart. Yet sincerity still needed refinement, for pride hides in subtle corners. I pressed deeper into truthfulness until even my secret thoughts submitted.


And then love deepened; remembrance poured like a stream through my days. Reflection on His words and creation humbled me. Slowly, ego withered. I found myself smaller, almost erased, when standing in worship.


Then came the summit — the realisation that all of life is tawhid, that nothing deserves reliance, hope, or love but Him. Knowledge of Him became my breath, certainty my anchor. My heart surrendered in contentment, no longer shaken by loss or gain. Love became perfect; longing burned stronger. In solitude, I found intimacy; I was never alone, for His presence wrapped me. I tried to live with excellence — praying as though I saw Him, and living as though He always saw me.


The self dissolved. Pride and self-will fell away, and only servitude remained. And so the journey brought me to arrival: not arrival at a place, but a state — a heart that rests near its Lord, a soul that has found its home.


This is the seeker’s voice — not climbing a ladder, but moving in circles of repentance, love, patience, and remembrance, until closeness to Allah becomes the only reality.
