صراط الذين انعمت عليهم غير المغضوب عليهم ولا الضالين

صِرَٰطَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ غَيْرِ ٱلْمَغْضُوبِ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا ٱلضَّآلِّينَ

Alors qu’on pense souvent que les péchés n’ont aucun impact social, demeure pourtant une réalité : chacun représente un modèle, qu’il le veuille ou non.

Quand on observe le développement d’un enfant, on voit qu’il acquiert énormément de choses par l’imitation. Pour imiter, il doit regarder, observer, percevoir, comprendre — ou ne pas comprendre — une logique, un schéma, qu’il va ensuite reproduire. De la même manière, en tant qu’individus, chacun d’entre nous porte le poids du regard des autres, et celui du fait que nos actes seront suivis et copiés, indépendamment de notre volonté.

Cela nous recentre sur notre objectif premier : adorer Allah, vivre pour Lui et faire converger toutes nos actions vers Lui, vers Sa satisfaction. 

Car lorsque nous agissons avec l’intention sincère de plaire à Allah, cette bonne action est vue par Lui, et elle peut devenir un chemin que quelqu’un d’autre suivra après nous. 

À l’inverse, lorsqu’on commet une faute ou qu’on prononce une mauvaise parole, on ouvre aussi un chemin : un passage qui laisse des traces, comme des pas dans la neige… et ces pas-là finiront peut-être par être suivis par d’autres.

Ainsi, chaque mot, chaque regard ; chaque effort dans l’adoration ; chaque fois où l’on ferme la porte à une passion, à un péché, à une interdiction ; chaque fois où l’on se lève pour obéir à Allah… tout cela crée un chemin.

Un chemin personnel, d’abord : celui qu’on emprunte de plus en plus souvent, jusqu’à ce qu’il devienne une action constante — et Allah aime les actions constantes.

Et un chemin social également : un sillon qui implique et influence d’autres individus.

Dans cette perspective, on comprend alors le rôle de chaque personne dans la Ummah : les actions de chacun ont un impact immense. Lorsque j’agis avec paresse, j’ouvre la porte de la paresse. Lorsque je dépasse les limites dans ma nourriture ou ma boisson, j’ouvre cette porte également.

On prend alors conscience du poids de nos péchés, qu’ils soient publics ou privés : car Allah dévoile, et en réalité, à travers nos actes, nous nous dévoilons nous-mêmes..

Allah décrit Son Messager ﷺ comme « un excellent modèle », ainsi que d’autres comme des modèles à prendre dans le Coran. Lorsqu’Allah nous montre des exemples de figures pieuses, communautés pieuses, des compagnons vertueux, ceci nous incite à marcher dans leurs pas, et nous essayons de puiser dans leur comportement et dans leurs bonnes actions.

Eux, à qui le paradis et ses délices ont été promis, eux qui sont mentionnés comme ayant un rang élevé auprès du Seigneur des Mondes, eux qui ont réussi…

Notre but reste le même : nous sauver nous-mêmes et nous préserver du feu de l’Enfer.

Toutefois, nous vivons dans un monde qui est rempli d’influences. Celles ci sont très importantes pendant l’adolescence : du haut de nos 11 ans, où les modèles sont des chanteurs, des rappeurs, des idoles, des footballeurs, des boxeurs, des influenceurs… des modèles qui, bien souvent, nous détournent du droit chemin. 

Ils nous montrent une version du monde qui contredit s’oppose à la réalité de l’au-delà, et qui s’oppose au Jour du Jugement.

Ce jour-là, on verra clairement que ces personnes dont nous avons imité les habitudes, les mots, les expressions, les comportements… ne pourront absolument rien pour nous — sauf s’il s’agissait de gens du bien, que nous avons suivis dans le bien.

En revanche, si ce sont des gens du mal, des personnes dans le péché, et que nous avons suivi leurs pas, il ne servira à rien de chercher auprès d’eux un quelconque réconfort ou une quelconque intercession. Ils ne pourront pas, et ils ne voudront pas être associés à nous.

Car la réalité de ce Jour de la Vérité — Yawm al-Haqq — est que le seul véritable suivi, c’est celui du droit chemin : celui de ceux qu’Allah a comblés de Ses faveurs, et non celui de ceux qui ont encouru Sa colère ni celui de ceux qui se sont égarés.

What is the straight path you ask.

The path is the path of those Allah has favored. 

The path is defined not by its intrinsic qualities but rather by those who tread it. 

Almost as if they are an intrinsic quality of the path. 

Without them what would the path be? (Imagine the path to Allah without the Prophet SAS: the door of the path, and any path not the path of the Prophet SAS no matter how hard we struggle, worship, etc. it leads nowhere but anger and misguidance.) And with them what does the path become? 

Those who are on the path are there only because of Allah's favor upon them: a favor that predates their wayfaring and their existence. 

It seems that this Ayah calls us to seek the company of these favored slaves so that we may reach Him (As some scholars put it, each believer is merely a mirror that reflects the prophetic light. One receives this light through a connected chain and passes it on to others.) and to become from them - to become a place of Allah's favor and witness that it is only His favor that has resulted in one's success on the path.

And those on the other side of the spectrum, are recipients of eternal anger and manifestations of misguidance that know no time and are not attributed to Allah out of adab. 

Could it be that this anger is not limited to divine anger only? Allahu A3lam

A Siddiqui Alhamdulilah indeed. Wa iyaakum. 

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Something struck me about Surat Al-Fatihah today. 

When an ayah is long, I sometimes wonder: Why is it long? Something is important here. It brings my attention to the topic of the ayah, it makes me wonder if I ever think about it as much, if I give it as much time as Allah ﷻ wants me to give. 

Surat Al-Fatihah is so short! And Subhan Allah it is something we have to recite several times a day so it is a mercy that it is short, Alhamdulillah. But the last ayah of this surah is longer than the others. I was just wondering as I recited, what am I being drawn towards, what should I think about here?

I realised that Allah ﷻ explains in this ayah what As-Sirat Al-Mustaqeem refers to. And I thought to myself — oh. If Allah ﷻ wanted, it could have been unexplained. It could have been a surah which ended with: "Guide us to As-Sirat Al-Mustaqeem. Ameen." But He ﷻ didn't make it so. He ﷻ explained the words in this ayah in more detail.

And I felt so honoured in that moment. Because I reflected that Allah ﷻ is taking the time to explain to us what His words mean, when He ﷻ doesn't need to do so. He ﷻ allows us to understand what we believe when we believe it, and to understand what we ask when we ask Him for it.

Often scholars have said that the essence of Surat Al-Fatihah is in the middle — إياك نعبد وإياك نستعين — and indeed it is an extremely important and beautiful ayah. But what makes me feel even more loved is that Allah ﷻ gives us the honour of first knowing Who He really is. Then after this ayah, knowing what we need from Him, and then even knowing what As-Sirat Al-Mustaqeem refers to. 

He allows us to know these things. 

When the next surah begins with Alif Laam Meem, doesn't it make one think?

If Allah ﷻ wanted, He could have made Surat Al-Fatihah just as unknowable as Alif Laam Meem. But the explanations, the knowledge He ﷻ chooses to make clear to us... it's a mercy. A huge mercy, not to be overlooked. 

And Subhan Allah. That put me in a bit of awe today. 

May Allah ﷻ increase us in knowledge.

When I was younger, this verse was explained to me in a very simple way. It was translated as: “not of those who incurred Your anger i.e the Jews nor of those who went astray i.e the Christians.” At that age, the verse felt like it was speaking about other people, other communities, other histories.

But as I grew older and returned to the verse again and again, I realized that the verse was not pointing outward nearly as much as it was pointing inward.

The more deeply I sat with “not of those who incurred anger nor of those who went astray,” the more it felt like a mirror held up to the soul. It was not simply describing groups of people in history. It was describing states of the human heart, states that exist within every one of us.

There is a part of the nafs that knows the truth but resists it. The part that clings to pride, that quietly justifies its own desires, that hears guidance yet finds reasons to delay obedience. This is the arrogance that leads to anger.

And there is another part of the nafs that drifts. The part that wants goodness but does not struggle enough to seek the truth properly. The part that follows habit, culture or convenience instead of knowledge. This is the laziness that leads to misguidance. Between these two states, the human heart moves constantly.

Suddenly the verse becomes deeply personal.
Each time we recite this verse, the question is no longer about others. The question is about ourselves.

When we say these words in our Salah, are we quietly thinking of someone else as an example? Or are we allowing the verse to confront our own soul?

Have we truly laid down our arrogance and accepted every word from our Lord even when it challenges our comfort, our desires, our assumptions?
And on the other side: have we truly spent our lives seeking the truth?

Faith is not only a statement that we pronounce once. It is a journey that requires constant seeking, constant humility, constant returning.

This is why this verse is recited over and over again, every day, every prayer. Because guidance is not something we obtain once and then possess forever. The heart can drift. Pride can grow quietly. Laziness can creep into the search for truth.

And so we return to this prayer again and again.

"Guide us to the path… not the path of arrogance and not the path of heedless wandering."

What amazes me most is that I have recited these words my entire life, yet every time I pause and reflect on them, something new opens. A deeper meaning reveals itself as if the words contain layers that unfold slowly with time.

The more honestly we confront ourselves, the more the verse begins to speak. And the more it speaks, the more we realize how desperately we need the guidance we are asking for.

Perhaps this is part of the miracle of the Qur’an, that a single verse can accompany a person for an entire lifetime and yet never become exhausted.
Every time we return to it sincerely, it returns to us with something new.

Do not make wrong translation of Aya 7. 
What are you saying that's not what Allah 
saying in this Aya so correct yourself? 

In order to avoid earning divine anger or going astray, it is vital to seek knowledge first about the ones who earned the anger of Allah and those who went astray because this cannot be done without knowing:

 what earns the wrath of Allah, 
who earned it in the past?
What were their traits, qualities, attributes, deeds and actions that we need to avoid? 
What were their personality, mindset, thought process, intentions and desires like?

It requires a deep dive into history through the lens of the Quran in order to study people of the past that angered Allah, like the Children of Israel and Nasara, Firon, People of Aad and Thamud etc. 

It's only after knowing them that we can avoid them and their likes. 

And there are many such examples laid out in the Quran about 'what not to do' and sometimes it is more important to know what not to do than to know what to do. 

Don't be arrogant
don't be selfish 
don't be self-deluding and boastful.

One can derive what to do through opposites.

Be humble, 
Be giving and sacrificing,
Be realistic and grateful.

May Allah make us amongst those whom He loves and not of those who anger Him. Ameen.

Surat Al Fatiha unlocks the keys to understanding the Quran’s main messages. It is known in various hadiths as the ‘Mother of the Quran’, the ‘healer’, the ‘7 oft repeated verses’, the ‘greatest surah in the Quran’ and a ‘light’. It is a form of prayer (supplication) to Allah where we ask and we are answered by His Grace. 

Surat Al-Fatiha establishes our relationship with Allah and outlines the three main components of love, hope, and fear or reverence.  Allah knows the nature of the human being - that we are primarily motivated by fear of pain and pursuit of pleasure. However beyond those two primary motivators is the original and highest motive which is love. 'All praise to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds' establishes our relationship first and foremost based on love with Allah (SwT). Allah comes from ‘illah’ - which means 'The One worshiped, The refuge, The One loved with an intense love, and The One that minds cannot fully comprehend' (cited from Dr. Jinan Yousef’s class on Names of Allah). We are reminded of the importance of gratitude to Allah and that one of the reasons that we are increased in blessings is gratitude: '... ‘If you are grateful, I will certainly give you more…' (Quran 14:7). We are also told about the significance of gratitude in the hadith : 'Verily, the best servants of Allah on the Day of Resurrection are those who constantly praised Him.' (Source: al-Mu’jam al-Kabīr lil-Ṭabarānī 18/124) and  'The best remembrance is to declare there is no God but Allah. The best supplication is to declare all praise is due to Allah.' (Source: Sunan al-Tirmidhī 3383).

Next we are introduced to Allah as 'Rab' - which according to an article by Dr. Zainab Alwani, means the ‘Sustainer, Cherisher of the worlds, and caretaker’ connected to tarbiyya which means to 'to raise and nourish at every stage until the goal is attained.' Allah is The Caretaker, Sustainer and Nourisher of our hearts, bodies, minds and souls. How could we not love Allah (SwT)? 

Next we are introduced to the concept of hope in Allah (SwT) through His attributes Arrahman, Arraheem (The Most Merciful, The Most Compassionate).  Allah’s mercy surrounds us in every single aspect of our existence, from the time we are protected in layer upon layer in three veils of darkness as fetuses as explained in 39:6, to the time we live on earth with the sky raised over us without pillars with His permission as explained in 22:55, to how Allah sent us the Prophet (peace be upon him) as a form of mercy to the worlds (21:107), to how the Quran continues to be there for us as a mercy (31:1-3).  His mercy is all encompassing (7:156) and beyond the mercy of a mother with her own child.

Then, after the introduction of the relationship with Allah based on love and mercy, we are reminded of Allah as 'The Master of The Day of Judgement' and of our return to Him on that day.  We are reminded to be cautious of having committed oppression towards ourselves or towards others. This should not be a debilitating fear but a type of awareness and accountability that justice will be served that day and there will be no oppression.  Understanding that Allah is the ‘Malik' - Ruler and Owner of that day and all that lies in the heavens and the earth awakens us to the reality that we do not own anything. Understanding that we do not own anything also enables us to have immense gratitude for these blessings and liberates us from becoming too attached to them, so we recognize that if the blessing is taken away or removed, we do not feel alone or are in despair because we recognize Allah is enough for us, that to Him we belong, and to Him we will return. 

We do not even own our own bodies, minds, hearts and souls - they are gifts entrusted to us for a time and they will be returned to their Creator and Owner.  This pushes us to ponder on how we want to use and return this trust we were given for a time - how do we want to use and treat the blessing of our bodies, hearts, minds and souls?  How will we nourish them, and in which way will we use them ? 

We are told in a hadith:

'The son of Adam will not pass away from Allah until he is asked about five things: 

How he lived his life
How he utilized his youth
With what means did he earn his wealth
How did he spend his wealth
What did he do with his knowledge.' (Tirmidhi)

So let us ask ourselves how do we want our return to Allah to be? How do we want to be able to answer these questions?

Next, if we understand that Allah is The One whom we love most, The Ultimate Refuge, Our Caretaker and Sustainer (Rabb), The All-Merciful (Arrahman), The All-Compassionate (Arraheem), The Owner and Master of the Day of Judgement (Al-Malik) and temper our over-attachments to fleeting temporary pleasures, we can truly embody 'You alone do we worship, You alone do we seek help' because He is The Only One worthy of worship, The One we will return to, and The One who can ultimately help us. 

This verse brings together two of the most important matters of the heart which are sincerity in ‘You alone do we worship’ and tawakul (reliance on Allah) in ‘You alone do we seek help’. Sincerity is connected to the truth of understanding we will return to Allah, and that our intentions are for His sake and ultimate help comes from Him.  Muslim psychologist, Dr. Marwa Assar, explains having sincerity allows us to declutter mentally, emotionally, and internally from many attachments which can create inner conflict and attachment to outcomes that are beyond our control. When our intentions are for the sake of Allah, we trust in the outcomes that Allah holds for us. This verse, coming in the plural form, also reminds us of the importance of belonging to a community and supporting one another in worship and seeking help from Allah.

Finally, we arrive at the dua we make - 17 times a day, and the dua is for guidance, which is greater than any other blessing because guidance gives us direction, clarity, purpose, knowledge about God, nearness to Him and in sha Allah success in this world and in the next. Guidance protects us when we are bombarded with messages about who we should be and what we should be doing from society. We ask for guidance, once again as a collective, in plural form, emphasizing the importance of community to support us with guidance to stay on the straight path.  Staying on the straight path entails istiqamah - consistency and steadfastness and anything of value requires consistency. The prophet (peace be upon him said): 'The most beloved of deeds to Allah are those that are most consistent, even if it is small.' (Bukhari). Dr. Assar shares that Istiqamah requires showing up and dedicating ourselves to the path of guidance we have chosen, even when we don’t ‘feel’ like it. Just like we go to school, work, or commit to anything even when we don’t ‘feel’ like it, committing to a path of faith and devotion to God cannot be dependent only on when we ‘feel’ like it or experience instant gratification because emotions are states which will fluctuate. Our submission to Allah helps us to stay the course and reminds us that we do not surrender to anything, including our feelings, or anyone but Him. 

Finally we are reminded about the importance of having a good support system through friendships and a community which supports our journey to Allah when we are told ‘the path of those whom you have blessed’. May we be of them. May Surat Al-Fatiha open our hearts to the beauty of the Quran, the beauty of faith, and the beauty of continuing to seek closeness to Allah.

It's never been so important to be particularly requesting guidance AWAY from the path of those both earning His displeasure and those who go astray.  Those are two separate categories of disbelief that, in surah Fatihah, we are imploring protection from. The first, displeasure of Allah,  is sort of a textbook understanding of what it means to be a disbeliever. In this category, we're actively sinning and calling people to sin, especially major sins. 

The second category -- going astray -- is much easier to slip into. This is more the problem of improper or inaccurate beliefs and twisted, halved, or stretched truths. The seeping of external cultural and ideological trends into our hearts and mindsets falls into this category. Part of maintaining the purity of our faith is to ensure that we question the beliefs and assumptions we take on from the world around us. One of the tricks of shaytaan is to slip little pieces of an ideology that is not 100% consistent with Islam into our hearts.  Staunch individualism is one such ideology that plagues the hearts of believers, often without our own realization, today. Countless others are, perhaps, consistent with some -- but never all  -- of our Islamic values. 

Despite our best and purest efforts, we would not succeed in avoiding straying in little ways from the Path without the mercy of Allah. Thus, we plead with Allah for His guidance and specifically to avoid going astray every day, multiple times a day, in Surah Fatiha. May Allah guide us and never let us be misguided, Ameen.

This verse from Surah Al-Fatihah is a profound reminder of the straight path we ask Allah to guide us to—one filled with His blessings and free from His displeasure or misguidance. Many us are familiar with the fact that Surah al-Fātiḥah is also known as Umm al-Qur'an ("The Mother of the Qur'an"). 

Just as a mother is the source from which life emerges, al-Fātiḥah contains the essential themes of the Qur'an, while every chapter that follows unfolds, develops, and brings those themes to life.

 I came across a really nice description of this magnificent  surah in the commentary of Shiekh Rashid Rida (RA), who comments:

"One of the remarkable patterns of Allah's way in both creation and revelation is that He begins with the essential, then unfolds the details over time. Think of a seed. At first glance, it seems small and unremarkable. Yet hidden within it are the foundations of a towering tree. With time, it grows, its trunk strengthens, its branches spread wide, and eventually it bears fruit. 

The Qur'an follows this same divine pattern.

Surah al-Fātiḥah is the seed of the Qur'an. It contains, in concise form, the core themes that the rest of the Qur'an gradually unpacks, explains, and brings to life. Every chapter that follows is a deeper exploration of the foundations first laid in these opening verses. (Tafsir Al-Manar). 

In essence when we repeat Surah Al-Fatiha in each Salah, we are renewing our commitment to the entirety of the Quran, by reminding ourselves of the Quran's core tenets, all contained within the marvellous and blessed seed. How merciful is our Creator that he provided for us a concise summary of  His words in just Seven Verses. 

{ I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "Actions are by motives, so each man will have what he intended. Thus, he whose migration was to Allah and His Messenger, his migration is to Allah and His Messenger; but he whose migration was for some worldly thing he might gain, or for a wife he might marry, his migration is to that for which he migrated." } (40 An-Nawawi, 1)

There's this substantial difference you'll find in saying that so and so eats to live, or that they live to eat. Same words, different purpose. Likewise, you'll find something similar in someone who found a wife as he migrated to Allah and His messenger ﷺ, versus someone who migrated to Allah and His messenger so he could seek a wife.

With that in mind, let's consider what it means to begin with,
{ In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful. } (Qur'an, 1:1)

It begins with an intent and a declaration: I start with Allah; He is the Most Merciful, the Especially Merciful.

It's so so subtle, yet so so easy to miss within our lives. A beloved family member passes away, or we failed an exam we so desperately wanted to pass, or we feel as though we only see suffering around us. We wonder... why?

That person you felt so deeply for: how long? 
The preparation involved in that exam: how long?
The suffering you've seen: how long?

Now, the time you spent in Allah's path in comparison: how long?
{ Recite in the name of your Lord who created } (Qur'an, 96:1)

We're going to make this easier on ourselves. We don't need to remember Allah fifty times a day, we only need to ensure at minimum that we take a moment to remember to recite the words we've been given five times a day and that these moments do not give way for anything in this life. That will be enough.

And suddenly, you'll find everything flips itself around, like the difference between living to eat, and eating to live.

That person you felt so deeply for and lost, how should you respond?
{ Recite in the name of your Lord who created }
The preparation involved in that exam and failed, how should you respond?
{ Recite in the name of your Lord who created }
The suffering you've seen and felt, how should you respond?
{ Recite in the name of your Lord who created }

{ Recite, and your Lord is the most Generous } (Qur'an, 96:3)
Whenever you feel as though you've lost something and you wonder why, you'll find that the declaration you made after the intent matters, it matters a lot. Whether you saw it or not, He took care of you before the loss, He's taking care of you during it, and He will care for you after. Whether you noticed it or not, you wanted to bury yourself in the setback, and your Lord didn't only wish for you something beyond that, He commanded it upon the believers so that they'd never forget to hope for the meeting with their Lord. Mercy upon mercy, gardens upon gardens, light upon light.

Recite in the name of your Lord, so that every obstacle is met for the hope that comes with asking,
{ Guide us to the straight path } (Qur'an, 1:6)

The hope that others upon this path have found, not the loss that those who went against it drowned in.
