#QuranicMaxims Day 4: 

'If an evildoer brings you any news, verify' (49:6) 

This ayah tells me many things. 

It cautions me to watch what I do, lest I should harm others umwittingly. 

As a graduate in law, the tort of negligence is a major branch in our legal system and we all have our own duties of care to not harm each other. You don't necessarily have to have criminal intentions to be penalised for what you've done. Carelessness is a blameworthy trait in itself. 

This ayah also tells me to have a good opinion of others as a default and  to stay far away from gossip and backbiting. This is, of course, especially true if an evil person with evil intentions, brings news. Then we must be extra vigilant and seek verification. 

A great example which has so many lessons is the incident of the slander of Aisha RA. Enormous harm and grief was inflicted on to the community and to the Prophet ﷺ and his family . All because of the evil rumours brought by the most evil of characters ‐ the hypocrites. Allah strongly chastises those Muslims who entertertained such evil ideas asking them why didn't they assume the best. 

This ayah tells me to regard people as innocent until proven guilty and that the ends don't justify the means.  And the Prophet SAW is reported to have said regarding legal punishments 'it is better to err in pardoning than in punishing' (Tirmidhi).

The legal perspective is very interesting and useful to compare! And indeed, the story of Slander is a very illustrative case.

In Surah An-Nur, we read about the very difficult period that the Mother of the Believers, Aisha bint Abi Bakr RA went through - the incident of Ifk (the slander). The whole incident has been heartwrenchingly described by Aisha RA herself.

Subhan Allah, no matter how many times I read it, it feels so heavy every time. Especially for us women, it feels even more personal, because if someone like Aisha RA can be a victim of such slander, then who are we! And if this is the effect on those who only read or hear it, then what must have Aisha RA herself endured? Subhan Allah, what immense patience she showed. Ofcourse, because she was among those beloved to Allah. And that is why Allah revealed verses to declare her innocence. رضي الله عنها

But the last time I read the hadith, it hit differently. This time, my attention somehow went to the other Companions too, both men and women - the "supporting characters" in this incident.

And most of all, towards our beloved Prophet Muhammad SAW. For an entire month after he first heard the slander, he did not question Aisha RA; he only continued to ask about her well-being. We cannot even imagine the kind of stature he held in that society, Subhan Allah. Yet, he did not think about his own honor, just cared for her health and state. And when he SAW did speak to her, how gently he presented the matter, mentioning the two possibilities. And in both cases, leaving the decision entirely to Allah - whether He SWT would declare her innocent or forgive her. Subhan Allah, even in this decision, he gave all the charge to Allah, without giving any importance to himself. صلى الله عليه وسلم 

Later, when he SAW wished to seek counsel, he consulted only a few trusted companions. The advices given to him by Usama ibn Zayd RA and Ali ibn Abi Talib RA were very different, yet both were balanced and full of wisdom.

Aisha RA's parents also showed remarkable patience and composure. They neither distressed their daughter with questioning nor spoke on her behalf without proof. And when Abu Bakr RA considered stopping financial support to Mistah ibn Uthatha RA, Allah revealed verses to discourage such behaviour, and he immediately let go of his anger. Subhan Allah what obedience!

The Prophet’s other wife, Zaynab bint Jahsh RA, set aside her personal rivalry with Aisha RA and chose Taqwa, giving only truthful testimony.

Mistah RA's mother openly rebuked her own son - something that is still very rare in our society today.

Even the maid-servant, Barira, gave a simple yet completely honest testimony reflecting Aisha’s RA innocence.

Subhan Allah. The real point of reflection here is: what would we have done if we were in their places? If an ordinary husband were in the position of the Prophet SAW, how would he have dealt with it? How humiliated would he feel, and how much patience would he show towards his wife? What would the parents’ response be? Would we be able to show the same level of Taqwa and wisdom, setting aside suspicion and resentment to give fair testimony and advice? Would we be able to forgive someone who would spread such a rumour about our child, despite living off our financial support!

When we read this hadith, we feel hurt and even anger at how such a slander could be fabricated and spread. But when any news about someone reaches us, do we investigate it? Do we maintain good opinion and defend them?

These are matters on which we must judge ourselves, and wherever needed, work to reform ourselves, in sha Allah.

This Ramadan, let us pray that Allah makes us among those who understand this Deen and act upon it like our role models - the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم and his noble Companions رضي الله عنهم أجمعين. Ameen.

🌐 Digital Ethics & Social Etiquette: Reflections on Surah An-Nur (Verses 11–26)

I start by reminding my own soul before anyone else’s. We live in an era where a single "send" button can destroy a life in seconds. Based on the timeless guidance found in Surah An-Nur, verses 11 to 26, we see that we have become a generation that receives news with our tongues—sharing it before it even reaches our hearts for reflection.
Our first instinct when hearing a rumor should always be Husn al-Dhann (assuming the best). In Verse 12, Allah asks us:
"Why, when you heard it, did the believing men and women not think well of one another and say, 'This is a manifest lie'?"

Instead, we often fall into the trap described in Verse 15:

"When you were passing it from one tongue to another, and saying with your mouths what you had no knowledge of, taking it lightly while it is [extremely] serious in the sight of Allah."

As the Surah reaches its peak in Verses 19–23, Allah warns those who "love that scandal should spread" among the believers, reminding us that even if we think we are just "lurking" or "re-sharing," we are participating in a spiritual disease. In the modern world, where digital hoaxes and "cancel culture" move faster than the truth, fact-checking is not just a skill—it is a religious obligation.
If we did not witness an act with our own eyes, and we do not have the four witnesses required by Divine Law, we must remain silent. The Surah concludes in Verse 26 by reminding us that "vile words are for vile people," but for those who guard their tongues, there is forgiveness and a generous provision. It is far better to be "out of the loop" than to stand before Allah with the shredded honor of another person in our hands.

May Allah forgive us for the sins we committed out of ignorance or for the sake of fame. May He protect our tongues from the poison of slander and guide us to live by the beautiful, protective manners of Surah An-Nur. 🤲

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَـٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ


I can hardly bear to imagine this moment.


The Mother of the Believers
Returns from an expedition with the believers —
Then falls ill.
For nearly a month,
Her body aches,
Unaware that her name —
Her dignity —
Has been dragged through the streets.

And near the end of her sickness,
She hears it.
The slander.
The accusations.

A city that once loved her —
Now echoes with lies.
And what hurt most…
Was not that her husband accused her —
No, he didn’t.
But that he too was hurting.
Quieter.
Colder.
Fewer words.
Less comfort.

It’s here we see where true strength lies —
Not in being the wife of the Prophet ﷺ.
Not even the Mother of the Believers.
But in being a ʿabdah — a servant — of Allah.

She raised her hands —
Broken.
But not rejected.

She said:

*'By Allah, I know that you have heard so much of this story that it has become planted in your minds and you believe it. So now if I tell you that I am innocent – and Allah knows that I am innocent – you will not believe me. But if I admit something to you – and Allah knows that I am innocent – you will believe me.

By Allah, I cannot find any example to give you except for what the father of Yusuf said:

فَصَبْرٌ جَمِيلٌ
وَاللَّهُ الْمُسْتَعَانُ عَلَىٰ مَا تَصِفُونَ

'So (for me) patience is most fitting. And Allah is the One Whose help is sought against that which you describe.' (Yūsuf 12:18)

She thought — just for a moment —
Maybe Allāh would reveal something for her.
But she pushed the thought away.
Out of humility.
She didn’t say,
'I’m the wife of the Prophet of Allah!'
She just placed her trust.

And Allāh —
Who never abandons the oppressed —
Revealed verses from the heavens.
Verses that will be recited
Until the end of times.
Verses that cleansed her name
With divine words of light.



This just goes to show.

If you ever settle your pain in the House of the All-Hearing,
By raising your trembling hands.
And even just whisper.
Know you are heard.


You may feel weak.
Unseen.
Left behind.

But you were never created to be forgotten.


Oh Allāh,
Let us trust You like she trusted You.
Let our hope in You never dim.

Let us forgive,
Even when our dignity is scarred,
Our honor broken,
Our tears flowing.

Oh Allāh,
Forgive us.
And let us find our honor —
In front of Your Glorious Face,
Under eyes that never sleep.

Ameen.

Self-improvement entails actionable strategies that enhance your quality of life, capabilities and make you a better person. Surah an-Nur teaches me that self-improvement begins with controlling one’s thoughts, speech and impacts on others.

It gives actionable strategies:

1)	Think good in your heart 

2)	Make excuse for people
لَّوْلَآ إِذْ سَمِعْتُمُوهُ ظَنَّ ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنَـٰتُ بِأَنفُسِهِمْ خَيْرًا وَقَالُوا۟ هَـٰذَآ إِفْكٌ مُّبِينٌ
‘’When you heard the lie, why did believing men and women do not think well of their own people and declare, ‘This is obviously a lie’?’’ (Q24:12)

3)	Verify the information. Use your intellect 
إِذْ تَلَقَّوْنَهُۥ بِأَلْسِنَتِكُمْ وَتَقُولُونَ بِأَفْوَاهِكُم مَّا لَيْسَ لَكُم بِهِۦ عِلْمٌ وَتَحْسَبُونَهُۥ هَيِّنًا وَهُوَ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ عَظِيمٌ 
 When you took it up with your tongues and spoke with your mouths things you did not know [to be true], you thought it was trivial but to God it was very serious. (Q24:15)

4)	Remove negativity in your mind with tasbeeh
وَلَوْلَآ إِذْ سَمِعْتُمُوهُ قُلْتُم مَّا يَكُونُ لَنَآ أَن نَّتَكَلَّمَ بِهَـٰذَا سُبْحَـٰنَكَ هَـٰذَا بُهْتَـٰنٌ عَظِيمٌ
If only you had said upon hearing it, 'How can we speak about such a thing! Glory be to You ˹O Lord˺! This is a heinous slander (Q24:16)!

Allah's Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم (said, 'Beware of suspicion, for it is the worst of false tales and do not look for the other's faults and do not spy and do not hate each other, and do not desert (cut your relations with) one another O Allah's slaves, be brothers!' - Sahih al-Bukhari 6724
