In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Especially Merciful,

I was preparing a Dhul Hijjah craft for my little students at my masjid on Thursday. I bought a small book for myself by sh Omar Suleiman about Dhul Hijjah in order to refresh my knowledge on it’s significance and to help myself and my students to mentally prepare for it’s arrival. 

The next day, I began cleaning the house from top to bottom and I had finished this small book. The knowledge I had acquired, I found very beneficial. My phone was left upstairs. I had hardly glanced at it most of the day. 

It occurred to me how much happiness reading and reflecting gives a person, especially for Muslims who seek knowledge to fulfil their purpose. The internet is an easy way of obtaining knowledge at the click of your finger tips. You will get many beneficial reminders but often in quick succession that many times I personally feel one loses it’s importance when you haven’t given that knowledge some reflection and time to internalise the message being taught. 

A simple day of cleaning, doing household chores and then reading and thinking carefully about the book caused me so much comfort and pleasure. There was a time when the world was like this, there was time to reflect upon knowledge and appreciate what is being conveyed. Reading is such a blessing, to internalise. to think deeply in order to act upon what is beneficial and what is not. 

We humans have been given intellect to discover and understand our purpose. Today. we are in a time of much distraction even when there is so much knowledge out there.
Yet, reading is so powerful, it allows you to analyse, to think, to rationalise, examine and draw carefully thought conclusions. 

Defeat distractions by allocating some valuable and consistent time to reflect and ponder deeply upon the Qur’an, the human lens will change to a much more clearer and peaceful one. Glory be to Allah Lord of the worlds! 

اقْرَأْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ
A call not just to read but to read with purpose. Allah links knowledge to Himself  "in the name of your Lord “Who created” reminds you: you are dependent, not self-made.
So this ayah shapes your intention:
seek knowledge to know Allah, not just the world.

The first command Allah gives us was to ''Read'' this means to always seek knowledge because life without knowledge is a life without purpose. 

especially nowadays since there is so much misinformation running around, we need to seek reliable sources and do our own research and not blindly trust what others say or speak. Allah wants us to always seek knowledge about everything including things happening around you.

this truly is a powerful word and Allah already knew a time like this (the current generation) would come where information can be easily passed around with a tap of your finger that's means there would be more spread of false news and false ideologies, so we must always do our own research about everything in life including Islam and don't blindly trust people who identify as ''sheikhs'' on the internet as you have no way of proving it, so it's better to go to your local imam and do more independent research.

Over these past few weeks, my six-year-old daughter has been learning about the first revelation — the moment Angel Jibreel (RA) descended with the words of Allah to our beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAWS). Together, we’ve spoken about the verse:
ٱقْرَأْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَ — Read in the name of your Lord who created.

At the Arabic calligraphy workshop with Khadija Sattar, I chose to write one simple, powerful word: Iqra — Read.
It felt like more than ink on paper. It was a reminder, a call, an opening.

In this morning’s session, Ustadha Khaoula reminded us that to truly connect with the Qur’an, we must begin where it began — with the Makkan verses, with Surah Al-‘Alaq.

Later, when Ustadha Dooa spoke of that dark, blessed night — when divine words descended from the heavens to a trembling heart in Cave Hira — I felt a rush of goosebumps.
In that moment, I was transported back to my Umrah journey in 2023, standing outside that same cave, imagining the stillness, the awe, the light breaking through darkness.

This verse has been echoing within me ever since.
Perhaps because I now hold the sacred task of teaching my children.
And I know — if my heart does not connect,
how can I teach them to find their connection?

Life is full of surprises! I never thought that on one fine summer day i will woke up in the morning and start reading Quran! Started with my first surah Al-alaq!! 
Indeed all blessings comes from Allah!
God is one, God is great!

In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful
Read … (96:1).
This was the first verse revealed to the Holy Prophet (S). 
Islam has always encouraged seeking of knowledge, the first word revealed is …read! 
The Qur'an says. 'Are those who have knowledge equal to those who do not have knowledge?!' (39:9). 
The Prophet of Islam (peace be upon him and his progeny) has also emphasized the importance of seeking knowledge in different ways: 
(a) Time: 'Seek knowledge from the cradle to the grave.' 
(b) Place: 'Seek knowledge even if it is far as China.' 
(c) Gender: 'Seeking of knowledge is a duty of every Muslim' 
(d) Source: 'Wisdom is the lost property of the believer, he should take it even if finds it in the mouth of a mushrik.' 
The Prophet did not only preach about importance of knowledge, but he also gave examples of promoting knowledge. In the very first battle between the Muslims and unbelievers or Mecca, known as the war of Badr, the Muslims gain victory and caught seventy kuffars as prisoners of war. One of the criteria of releasing the prisoners of war devised by the Prophet was that those who were literate among the prisoners could go free if they teach ten Muslim children how to read and write.
…In the Name of your Lord who created; (96:1).
There is emphasis on the proposition of Lordship. Rabb means a 'one who owns everything, has complete authority, who ensures growth, development, maturity and provides guidance and sustenance for everything.
The Lordship of Allah the 'Creator and Sustainer of the this universe', is emphasized because the best reason for His Lordship is, His Creative attribute. 
Read in the name of Thy Lord …means begin with basmalah.

اِقۡرَاۡ بِاسۡمِ رَبِّكَ الَّذِىۡ خَلَقَ​ۚ‏ ١

Read! in the name of your Lord, who has created you.

Imagine, how Hazrat Jibraeel AS came to Prophet Mohammad ﷺ and asked him to READ!
(Other meanings of 'Iqra' are to recite or repeat from memory) 

Our beloved prophet ﷺ said; 
‘Ma Ana bi-qari’
I am not a reader

Angle Jibraeel AS asked him ﷺ again READ!
He repeated it three times, embraced our Prophet ﷺ and revealed the initial verses of the Quran.
The embrace was not only a way of emphasizing the gravity and significance of the message being delivered but also an act of reassurance and comfort to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Remember this encounter, 
whenever you are starting a new journey of learning in Islam 
whether it is Recitation, Tafseer, Hifdth, Arabic Grammar or Seerah studies. 

Never get overwhelmed or discouraged

Remember the embrace of Hazrat Jibraeel AS 
whenever you have doubts about yourself;
I can't do it 
or
It's too hard
or
I am not a scholar

This message of the Quran is a blessing.
Allah has strengthened the heart of every Muslim 
to receive it,
understand it and 
repeat it from memory. 

May Allah grant us the ability to internalize His words, find comfort in His guidance, and strengthen our faith. 
May our hearts be filled with tranquillity and peace through a deep connection with Allah. May our journey in seeking closeness to Him be rewarding, and may we find solace in His mercy and wisdom. Ameen

Questions to ask yourself before a Tadabbor activity:
This post is an attempt to 'CODIFY' the process of Tadabbor, and make it easier for fellow Quran Reflectors to get into the process and taste the sweetness of extracting gems from Allah's book, without violating any known principle of speaking without knowledge.

I will keep updating this list, so appreciate if you guys can comment with your tips:
1- How does Allah introduce Himself to us in this Ayah / passage / Surah? What are the names He has used (e.g. Al-Rahman) or the attributes and descriptions (e.g. Read in the name of your Lord, the one who created ..)?
2- How does Allah describe human beings and their actions? Is the description one that honors and praises, or one that warns and condemns ?
3- Any words / phrases that Allah repeated? and why did He do that?
4- What are other Ayahs / stories / key Quranic principles that resonate with the theme / Ayah at hand? 
5- From inspiration to action: What are the actionable items that the Surah / Ayah invite us to do? Remember that this is the ultimate goal of Tadabbor, which is to inspire and drive action!

Assalamu alaykum wbt, 

When I was younger, I learned that this was the first ayah that Allah send down to our dearest beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAW). That Allah first instruction is for us to read. 

It’s not just to read to increase our knowledge but to read because of Him. But what does it mean ‘to read because of Allah’? 

I came to realised in the last few days, to be able to love or hate or fear someone, you need to have some sort of info of that person. Some would claim to fall in love at first sight. The first sight gave info on beauty of that person. Perhaps we like someone for his/hers expand of knowledge. But basically you have something to start with - an info of that person. 

But with Allah, we’re facing the unseen. We required info about Allah which can only be obtained from reading. That’s why I think Allah told us to read. So that we could get to know Him and to read because of Him. How do we knows Allah’s command if we don’t read and learn.

And I think that’s what this ayah mean. Read in the Name of your Lord Who created. To read, to gain knowledge for His sake. To read so we could love Him, fear Him, obey His commands and leave what He has forbidden. Most importantly to get closer to Him. 

It’s impossible to love or fear if you don’t have the knowledge of that person. So I guess Allah told us, He instructed us to read because of Him. So we will know Him better. 

Of course there’s other branches of knowledge, literature, science, finance etc. Every knowledges that exist in this world all came directly from Him. He created everything that we knows and much more beyond our imagination. 

I mean I had this question before, how exactly studying business can be for the sake of Allah? I guess it goes back why we’re studying it? In my case, to make a living in halal manners for the sake of Allah. 

Action: 
1. Allah commands us to read and to do it because Him. It can be in any reasons but it always has to go back because of Him. 
2. We have to be more mindful of our niyah. 
3. A good deed is rewarded 1 hasanah for when you make niyah. And another atleast 10 hasanat when it is carry out/done.
4. We have to be mindful of what we read as well. How do we read for the sake of Allah if we’re reading gossips newspapers and magazine or books with lots of x-rated stuffs. 
5. We should read things that will give us benefit for both worlds. 

Anyhow, this is my tadabbur on this ayah. Only Allah knows best.

This year hoping to start a 'Ayah Journal' to record all the readings, inshallah. Which will be in three columns,

I wondered 

I learned

SUBHANALLAH......the very first ayah revealed to our prophet(saw) from our RABB,the Mighty,the Wise....
اقْرَأْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ
How powerful might be the very 1st verse???

How much wisdom does the verse have???

Are we obeying the very first command from our LORD,which is to 'READ'.???

Infact,what are we supposed to 'read' during our lifetime???

We have to seek allahs help to read and get the wisdom from quran and to get closer to allah.A slave has to read eagerly  his master's each and every word with atmost importance.

We have to read and understandand not only from QURAN
but also through everything in the universe including 'us', that is being created by our RABB .We have to ponder, reflect and understand that everything is blessing from Allah.

Allah is asking us to observe and reflect on all the creation to know him more and more.As allah has said in surah alimran,verse 191 ....he has not created anything in vain...With Allahs help,blessing and guidance,if we observe our nature carefully we can see how perfect,merciful,magnificient,generous,loving,caring,gentle,protecting,helpful etc is our LORD.Through his amazing creation (including we humans,everything on earth and the sky) we can read or learn or understand our RABB and thus we can be in constant remembrance of our LORD.....

May Allah swt unlock our heart to receive his divine light and let Allah swt allow us to spread the rays of the light......
