These verses speak to us amidst the genocide in Gaza.


There is an amazing connection between the opening and closing of this sūrah. In the very first verse, Allah says:

'The command of Allah is at hand, so do not hasten it. Glorified and Exalted is He above what they associate ˹with Him in worship˺!' (Quran 16:1)

The opening calls us to refrain from haste and assures us that Allah’s decree is already in motion, and the closing of the surah commands us to bear with patience. The sūrah also contains similar reminders to patience, such as in 16:42 (see reflection here: https://quranreflect.com/posts/22815?locale=fr. And finally, it ends with a call for the Prophet (peace be upon him) and the believers to bear with patience. 'Bear with patience, and do not grieve over them, nor be distressed by what they scheme. Allah is with those who are mindful of Him and with those who do iḥsān.' (Quran 16:127)

According to some reports, these verses were revealed in the aftermath of Uhud, one of the most painful chapters in early Islamic history. Some of the most beloved companions were killed, including the Prophet’s uncle Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him), who was brutally mutilated. The Prophet (peace be upon him) himself was injured. It was in that moment of immense loss that Allah revealed these words, a healing and a comfort to His Messenger and the believers.

These verses remain a balm for us today.

'Be patient' for what is patience except with Allah? When hope seems to fade, when there is no anchor left to hold onto, it is only with Allah that we find strength to endure. He is the All-Watchful, and with Him lies the promise of ultimate justice.

'Do not be distressed': this assurance comes from the All-Knowing, the All-Powerful. If Allah Himself tells us not to be overcome by grief or the schemes of oppressors, then we must hold onto that promise even as our eyes weep and our hearts ache. Patience here does not mean the absence of pain. The Prophet (peace be upon him) himself wept at loss. Rather, it means refusing to let despair take root in the heart. It means trusting that Allah has not abandoned the oppressed, and that every injustice will be answered in His perfect timing.

Some of the commentators of tafsīr explain 'do not be distressed' as: do not grieve over those killed at Uhud, for they have already passed on to the mercy of Allah. Likewise, every innocent soul taken in Gaza is not lost in vain. They too have passed into Allah’s mercy, where no oppressor can reach them.

When you find it hard to digest the horrors you see, remember: the same verses that healed the Prophet (peace be upon him) at Uhud were given to heal our hearts today. Patience is not silence in the face of oppression, it is holding firm to Allah when the world shakes, believing with certainty that His justice never sleeps, and that His companionship is with those who are steadfast in taqwa and ihsan.

Let us carry the patience of Uhud in our hearts: patience that fuels action, not silence. Patience that makes duʿa with conviction for our brothers and sister in Palestine, and supports the oppressed with whatever means we have at our disposal, from our voices, our wealth, our advocacy.

After more than 17 months of witnessing a live streamed genocide, this aya brings comfort to my aching and broken heart. 

‎أَتَىٰٓ أَمْرُ ٱللَّهِ فَلَا تَسْتَعْجِلُوهُ 
The command of Allah has come (already here!) do not hasten it.

It is a powerful reminder that Allah (SWT)’s decree unfolds in His perfect timing, reassuring us that His justice WILL prevail and His promise is ALWAYS true.  As we witness these unimaginable horrors, the relentless oppression, the unbearable pain, we desperately wish for immediate relief and a swift victory for our honored people of Gaza. 
However, this aya is teaching us that Allah (SWT)’s plan is unfolding, even if we do not see it fully or comprehend it. Our duty is to remain steadfast, to resist despair, and to trust that His justice will manifest at the appointed time.

The second part of the aya,
‎سُبْحَـٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَـٰلَىٰ عَمَّا يُشْرِكُونَ
Glorified and Exalted is He above what they associate (with Him in worship), is a reminder that no power, no force can rival Allah (SWT)’s authority. No matter how invincible the oppressors may seem, their strength is nothing compared to the might of Allah (SWT). History has shown time and again that tyrants rise and fall, and oppression is always short-lived.

This aya is both a warning to the oppressors and a comfort to the believers. While we must do our part: standing for justice, boycotting products that support the oppressors, attending protests, giving in charity for the oppressed, and making constant heart felt duaa, we should also surrender the ultimate outcome to Allah (SWT) trusting that His help IS near. 

‎أَلَا إِنَّ نَصْرَ اللَّهِ قَرِيبٌ
Verily, the help of Allah (SWT) is near.

This is the promise of Allah (SWT) and His promise is ALWAYS true. 
So even in our deepest sorrow, immense hurt and being let down by the world, we hold firm to the certainty that Allah (SWT) will never let us down.

A friend of mine was once applying for jobs. He sent his CV to 100s of companies, and each time he was rejected, making him feel really upset. He was an intelligent guy and knew he could ace an interview if he was just given a chance. 

One day, he received a letter from one of the top companies in the world – he was being invited for an interview! Thrilled, he prepared all he could and turned up on the day; he smashed it out of the park. The company then invited him for a second interview; again he smashed it! He knew he could do this, and began to feel he had secured the job already. The final interview was with one of the company bosses. It is usually just a formality, checking you get on ok and then offering you the job. He turned up for the interview and he felt it went well. He began picturing himself working at the company, and planning how he would spend all that money.

‘Ring-Ring’
'Hello is that Mr Khan? We’re sorry to tell you, we won’t be proceeding with your application'

He was distraught. He was certain he aced it, but had no idea why they didn’t accept him. Seeking some comfort, he saw the Quran on his shelf. He decided to open it to the first random page and hear Allah’s ﷻ words. He’s sure he will find comfort in them. He lands on Surah Al-Nahl

أَتَىٰ أَمْرُ اللَّهِ فَلَا تَسْتَعْجِلُوهُ ۚ سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ عَمَّا يُشْرِكُونَ

God’s decree has come, so do not ask to bring it on sooner. Glory be to Him! He is far above anything they join with Him!
(16:1)
 
Shivers went down his spine. He felt as though Allah ﷻ was speaking to him directly; He has already ordained which job he would get, so do not rush it!

A few weeks later, my friend interviewed for another job which he managed to secure Alhamdulillah! It was far better, higher paid and much more prestigious. 10 years on, we both look back at the incident; we know this was the best thing for him. Had he got the initial job he wanted, he would never have interviewed for this and would have been much worse off. In his moment of sadness, the Quran spoke to him, comforting him in his difficulty. So in your moments of happiness and sadness, turn to the book of God, and let Him speak directly to you too.

Some ayahs just make you think about so many things,  to the point where it's hard to pen down a reflection on them. SubhanAllah.

Wa iyyakum, may Allah allow us all to contemplate his words deeply so we can live by them, Ameen. 

To me, this serves as a reminder that God created everything on this planet — that there’s no such thing as chance. You were given everything you got, and you were never going to get what you didn’t.

This is incredibly empowering, and it helps me achieve a sense of peace.

That project I worked so hard on, that investment I really wanted to close .. if I try my absolute best, and I don’t get it .. then it’s all good.

Get up, dust yourself, and move on. Life’s too short to worry about what-ifs, and what could be. Just move on.

It’s also a useful reminder about our place in this Earth. I don’t see myself as being greater than others .. I also don’t see others as being better than me. At the end of the day, we were all created by God .. and that’s that. I submit to God alone, and no one else. No one can touch me.

TL;DR: Whether it’s bad or good, it’s all good.
