الظّٰلِمِيۡنَ​ ۖ ​ۚ‏

There is a duʿa I keep coming back to especially in moments when life feels heavy, confusing, or overwhelming: “La ilaha illa anta, subhanaka, inni kuntu minaz-zalimeen” (There is no deity except You; You are perfect; indeed, I have been among the wrongdoers). This was the duʿa of Prophet Yunus (ʿalayhi as-salām) when he was in complete darkness; alone, with no way out, except turning to Allah. And that is what makes this duʿa so powerful. It’s not just part of his story; it’s something we can hold onto in our own difficult moments.

When he says “La ilaha illa anta,” it’s a reminder that no matter how much we rely on people or our own plans, in the end, only Allah can truly help us. Sometimes we don’t realize this until everything else is taken away. Then when he says “Subhanaka,” he is acknowledging that Allah is perfect, even when our situation doesn’t make sense to us. It teaches us to trust Allah, even when we don’t understand what we’re going through.

And when he says “Inni kuntu minaz-zalimeen,” he is simply being honest and humble accepting his mistakes and turning back to Allah. This shows us that we don’t have to be perfect to call upon Allah. We just have to be sincere.

This duʿa teaches us something very gentle but powerful: relief doesn’t always begin when our problems disappear, but when our hearts turn back to Allah. When we stop relying only on ourselves and truly call on Him.

So, if you ever feel lost, stuck, or overwhelmed, come back to this duʿa. Say it slowly, understand it, and let it settle in your heart: “La ilaha illa anta, subhanaka, inni kuntu minaz-zalimeen.” Because sometimes, the moment you realize you need Allah… is the moment things begin to change within you.

Not all that burns is a punishment.
Not all that feels acidic is destruction.

Allah’s mercy and light are always around us...

But my heart wasn’t ready to receive it.
It was layered with rust—sins, distractions, desires, evil thoughts, heedlessness.

Then, by divine decree, Allah placed me in an acidic medium.

It burned—but not to destroy me.
It burned to dissolve the rust I had allowed to build over my heart.

When I went through that deep pain,when I felt alone, broken, and suffocated by uncertainty—
my heart finally cracked open.

And through that crack, Allah’s light entered.

In that vulnerable moment, Allah allowed me to utter:

'La ilaha illa Anta, Subhanaka, innee kuntu minaz-zalimeen.' and various other duas and zikr.

 Prophet Yunus (عليه السلام), in the DARK ACIDIC belly of the whale, isolated and overwhelmed and said:
'There is no deity but You. Glory be to You! Truly, I was among the wrongdoers.'
(Surah Al-Anbiya 21:87)

He didn’t just survive the darkness—he transformed in it.
He surrendered. He glorified. He repented.
And in doing so, he rose.

Allah grants each of us a similar moment.A moment when external pressure cracks open the sealed heart.

Whether we grow or retard—it depends on our response.

Because, that acidic medium isn't there to corrode—

It’s there to catalyze.

It becomes the very water in which we swim back to our Rabb,uninterrupted, undistracted, and in surrender.

So the question is:

Will we allow the acidic medium to awaken our hearts,

or will we harden and resist what was sent to heal us?

May Allah, out of His infinite mercy, grant us the strength, patience, and wisdom to navigate every test with steadfastness and faith.

Enlightened

وَذَا ٱلنُّونِ إِذ ذَّهَبَ مُغَٰضِبٗا فَظَنَّ أَن لَّن نَّقۡدِرَ عَلَيۡهِ فَنَادَىٰ فِي ٱلظُّلُمَٰتِ أَن لَّآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّآ أَنتَ سُبۡحَٰنَكَ إِنِّي كُنتُ مِنَ ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ

And remember the man with the whale, when he went off angrily, thinking We could not restrict him, but then he cried out in the deep darkness, ‘There is no God but You, glory be to You, I was wrong.’ (Al-Anbiya 21:87)

Anger, an extreme state of mind, can easily make us lose our judgement. It blinded us from seeing the truth and from seeking deeply into matters. Anger and assumption can make someone run away from a problem rather than facing it bravely. Both states of mind continue to feed improper thoughts to us, clouding our judgements. Hence, sometimes when we are trapped, it is like a signal for us to stop doing whatever we are doing and instead to start thinking and reflecting.

It is a test from Allah to Prophet Yunus when his people were stubborn and didn't accept what he preached to them in the beginning. As a result, he left in anger and did not expect that Allah would teach him through a peculiar event when he ended up in the belly of a whale. Those were his true state of darkness (dzulm) – his anger and assumption that Allah would not test him. Ironically, he was enlightened in the most unexpected place to end up with – in the three layers of darkness, i.e., the dark night, the depth of the ocean and the belly of the whale. This is when he realised that he was wrong, and he immediately prayed for forgiveness.

Trapped in darkness and in the most uncomfortable space, with no way out, and perhaps waiting for death to come can easily make us lose hope and forget the most important thing to do—ask for forgiveness from Allah. It is a sincere prayer from someone who acknowledges his mistakes. Yes, light (nur) from Allah makes us see clearly what we do wrong.

Interestingly, the dua began with a firm stand that there is no God but Allah. In a state of anger, we can let emotions and prejudices, and not faith in Allah, dictate our actions. Hence, by saying this, it is as if we are renewing our faith in Him. It is followed with tasbih, an act that purifies Allah from any impurities. By doing tasbih, we are accepting whatever befalls on us as a test from Him, which is an extension of His rahmah and mercy. These two components make us firm in our belief and also serve as an acceptance of our weakness. Lastly, acknowledging that we are wrong proves our sincerity.

This dua teaches me that in whatever situation I may be, don't forget Allah. Ask for His forgiveness. That is my only lifeline. Regardless of the outcome of my situation, His forgiveness is the only thing that matters, and to Him I surrender all hope.

وَٱكۡتُبۡ لَنَا فِي هَٰذِهِ ٱلدُّنۡيَا حَسَنَةٗ وَفِي ٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ إِنَّا هُدۡنَآ إِلَيۡكَۚ قَالَ عَذَابِيٓ أُصِيبُ بِهِۦ مَنۡ أَشَآءُۖ وَرَحۡمَتِي وَسِعَتۡ كُلَّ شَيۡءٖۚ فَسَأَكۡتُبُهَا لِلَّذِينَ يَتَّقُونَ وَيُؤۡتُونَ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ وَٱلَّذِينَ هُم بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا يُؤۡمِنُونَ

Grant us good things in this world and in the life to come. We turn to You.’ God said, ‘I bring My punishment on whoever I will, but My mercy encompasses all things. ‘I shall ordain My mercy for those who are conscious of God and pay the prescribed alms; who believe in Our Revelations; (Al-A’raf, 7:156)

#QuranicDuas

Baarakallahu fiik. Indeed, Allah answers our prayer immediately. We shouldn't feel tired or lose hope in asking from Him. Jazakallah khairan.

Has there ever been a time where you have acted in the heat of the moment or under exceptional circumstances, where your judgement was impaired, and your actions lead you to an undesired consequence, and regret? If you have been in such a situation, did you rely on this dua?

This is the story of Yunus AS, who leaves his community dismayed and in a rage, because his community outright rejected his call and remained stubborn in their disbelief. (They eventually became believers upon seeing the punishment emerging towards them). 

As a result, and after some turn of events, he found himself lodged in deep and dark, dungeon-the belly of a whale. Many may doubt this event, and claim it is far fetched. But as believers we believe in it, exactly as Allah describes it.

Sa’d reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, 'The supplication of Jonah, Dhul Nun, when he called upon Allah inside the belly of the whale was this, ‘There is no God but You, glory be to You for I have certainly been among the wrongdoers,’ (21:87). Verily, a Muslim never supplicates for anything with it but that Allah will answer him.'

The prayer of the prophets are template examples for us to rely on for our own wishes and hopes.
These duas give us relief and conviction as the duas of the prophets are based on real life situations which they experienced. The duas are snapshots of the challenges which the prophets faced, and through their duas they overcame these challenges, and Allah is telling us that he will respond in the same way to all those who believe and invoke the same divine protocol. 
We may never get swallowed by a whale but there will be moments where we will feel isolated and lodged in a dark and unknown place. This dua then becomes our refuge.  'Had he not constantly glorified Allah, he would have certainly remained in its belly until the Day of Resurrection' (Quran 37:143-144).

Allahumma Ameen. Indeed our duas are moments in which we display our vulnerability and weakness before Allah SWT. May Allah grant us acceptance and forgive us especially in these blessed. nights. Amen 

One reflection that I've had is that in making a dua, the main goal of it is actually to strengthen our relationship with Allah in doing so, and the particular thing that we are asking for is secondary.


For indeed, if our relationship with Allah is good, then the ease, help, and the resources that we are asking for in order to handle our situation will automatically come to us through Allah's mercy and in the way that He wills.


It's the connection or the relationship between us and Allah that matters the most. And dua, at its core, I believe, is a relationship building act; it goes beyond just supplicating and getting what we want.


Maybe that is why, in all the duas of the Prophets (peace be upon them) that are mentioned in the Quran, we see how much respect, humility, and adab (manners) they show every time they communicate their needs and feelings to Allah SWT. Even when they are in difficulty, they don't complain to Allah, but rather they use gentle words and they start to glorify Allah even more.


Also, it's probably not a coincidence that there are at least 40 duas in the Quran that start with the name 'Rabb' ('Lord'). This word, if it is internalized properly, makes us realize what our relationship is with Allah: He is our Master, and we are His slaves. He is both extremely loving and caring and, at the same time, He has power and authority over all things.


It is not the word 'Rabb' itself that makes a difference, but it is truly knowing what it means and therefore making Allah SWT the greatest thing in our hearts, and then putting our full trust in Him. And all that, ultimately, creates a relationship between Him and us.


And then we turn to Him in a state of neediness and brokenness, but also with love and gratitude towards Him - because He is our Rabb.

ظالم 
refers to being in darkness, shadows and putting something in the wrong place.

It also refers to acting unjustly, wronging another and transgressing bounds.  Deviating from the path or proper conduct is implied too.

This takes me to the dua of Prophet Yunus as. 

{ وَذَا ٱلنُّونِ إِذ ذَّهَبَ مُغَٰضِبٗا فَظَنَّ أَن لَّن نَّقۡدِرَ عَلَيۡهِ فَنَادَىٰ فِي ٱلظُّلُمَٰتِ أَن لَّآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّآ أَنتَ سُبۡحَٰنَكَ إِنِّي كُنتُ مِنَ ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ }
[Surah Al-Anbiyāʾ: 87]

And remember the man with the whale,when he went off angrily, thinking We could not restrict him, but then he cried out in the deep darkness ‘There is no God but You, glory be to You, I was wrong.’

Yunus as transgressed the bounds set by Allah swt. By giving up on his people, he deviated from his prophetic path. In doing so, he acted unjustly, but ultimately he wronged himself. 

We know that  ظالم refers to darknesses and something being put in the wrong place. It has also been said that Yunus as found himself in not just one layer of darkness, but three: the darkness of the whale's belly, the darkness of the depths of the sea, and the darkness of the night, from which he called out to Allah swt for forgiveness. 

SubhanAllah.

What this emphasises is that when we act unjustly towards others and deviate from our path, transgressing the bounds set by Allah swt, we ultimately wrong ourselves on multiple levels. And so Allah swt places us in depths of darkness, layers upon layers of darkness that we have to then acknowledge and recognise.

And even then His door of forgiveness is always open, and only He can bring us out of it. What's beautiful is that not only will He forgive us, He will then grant us so much more.

Arabic Gems

Surah Anbiya Ayat 87
وَذَا النُّونِ إِذ ذَّهَبَ مُغَاضِبًا فَظَنَّ أَن لَّن نَّقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ فَنَادَى فِي الظُّلُمَاتِ أَن لَّا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنتَ سُبْحَانَكَ إِنِّي كُنتُ مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ

And [mention] the man of the fish, when he went off in anger and thought that We would not decree [anything] upon him. And he called out within the darknesses, 'There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers.'

While going through these amazing Dua I was reflecting and thinking deeply the situation when Hazrat Younus was in the fish belly 
how scared he was full of sadness and sorrow as he was the Prophet  

Here the darkness is the belly!!
When we are hit hard by the day-to-day traumas, rejection, relationships, loneliness.
These all are the darkness every human being is facing.
Even in the extreme situations,
the impossible situations, Allah will make the way out 
Allah says if he didn't praise Allah SWT 
then he would have been there forever.
Remembering Allah all the time 
is the light which removes the darkness even in our nafs, in our heart and in our soul

  لاَّ إِلَـهَ إِلاَّ أَنتَ سُبْحَـنَكَ إِنِّى كُنتُ مِنَ الظَّـلِمِينَ
One of the reason this dua is so comforting is that we are confessing our fault here, we confess that we are indeed wrong doers. It's US who overthinks about future and ruin the day with something that may or may not happen. 

Allah NEVER told us to overthink about future it's our own fault we don't stop doing so and then we blame it on whispers of shaytan. 
So Allah in this Dua taught us to confront our 'fears and faults' and also tells us How Merciful He is. Indeed we are actual wrongdoers Allah never wrongs anyone. 


Try understanding this from your own pov 
Your child comes to you and says you're gonna take away his toys while in your mind you never thought of doing so or you had plans of taking away his old toys and giving him some better that he wished for. Now your child is crying and making a fuss again and again about fear of unknown future of his toys without knowing he maybe losing something more worthy while doing so. 
The same way we behave with Allah about our anxieties of future without knowing what blessings Allah has kept for us ahead. 
Indeed we are wrongdoers Allah never wrongs us in anyway.

ٱلْيَوْمَ أَكْمَلْتُ لَكُمْ دِينَكُمْ وَأَتْمَمْتُ عَلَيْكُمْ نِعْمَتِى وَرَضِيتُ لَكُمُ ٱلْإِسْلَٰمَ دِينًا
It was on a day like today some 1400 years ago that Allah declared having chosen for us Islam as our way of life. The same way of life that was epitomized by our father Ibrahim AS who named us Muslimeen. The same man AS we honor in these ten best days and whose footsteps we walk.  And on this witnessed day, as we submerge ourselves in worship and drain our eyes of tears begging Allah in Du`a, I cannot help but think of our brothers and sisters in Palestine and in Gaza especially. They literally and metaphorically walk the paths of the prophets. By choosing to fight for their freedom and survival in a land they hold dear, we see them not only choosing to sacrifice themselves for this cause, but also sacrifice their children and families and everything they love much like our father Ibrahim AS. They are truly living to the Muslim name by submitting to Allah like their father Ibrahim AS. 

And when I see the pictures of our brothers and sisters under rubble in darkness above darkness, I am reminded of Yunus AS in the belly of the whale, in darkness above darkness. And I cannot help but utter the Du`a that rescued him with complete conviction that Allah will undoubtedly rescue my brothers and sisters too. وَكَذَ ٰ⁠لِكَ نُـۨجِی ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ

And when I see their starving emaciated bodies in desperate need to survive, eating whatever they could find, I am reminded of the Prophet S.A.W and the Sahabah during the boycott yet Allah's aid finally came just as it will come for my brothers and sisters too. Just like it came for Hajar RA and Isma`il AS and until today, we drink from that aid. 

We have the power in Du`a and in this special day to unlock the help we seek - individually and as a collective. 

On this day of Du`as, let us also be witnessed as Muslimeen and let's make our Du`as count and be counted among those that count in the sight of the most high.

Ever wondered why the Quran mentions forgiveness so often ?
To fail shaitan's attack, we make a mistake and feel guilty, which is healthy. But shaitan tries his very best to keep us trapped in that guilt., and to never let us out. 
In times like these when forgiving becomes really hard, and we're not able to start everything over again. Here comes a reminder from the most loving and caring, Oo my servant, let go, it's okay, i know you've messed up, but i am ready to forgive anything and everything. Come on up, start over, turn the page. 
Everytime we make a mistake, all we have to do is just turn back to Allah and acknowledge all over again, 
How perfect He is, and how flawed and imperfect we are. Like Yunus
لا الہ الا انت سبحنک انی کنت من الظالمین
I have no one else to turn to, You are my only ilah, You are so perfect Ya Rab, most definitely it's only me who is the wrong doer. 
When our imperfections are killing us, that is the time to remember How perfect Allah is. And Only He is perfect. Only He is worthy of Glory سبحانه.

Allah's forgiveness is a source of comfort and hope for us. It is a reminder that no matter how flawed and imperfect we may be, Allah is always ready to forgive us. He encourages us to turn to Him, seek His forgiveness, and start anew. It is through His forgiveness that we find solace and are able to move forward.
The verse you mentioned from Surah Yunus (10:10) beautifully encapsulates this sentiment. It is a humble acknowledgment of our own mistakes and imperfections, recognizing that Allah alone is perfect and worthy of all glory.
In times when our imperfections weigh heavily on us, it is crucial to remember the perfection of Allah and seek His forgiveness. By turning back to Him, we find the strength to overcome our shortcomings and strive towards becoming better individuals.
May Allah (SWT) shower His forgiveness and mercy upon us, and may we always remember His perfection and seek His forgiveness with sincere repentance.
