ومنهم اميون لا يعلمون الكتاب الا اماني وان هم الا يظنون

وَمِنْهُمْ أُمِّيُّونَ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ إِلَّآ أَمَانِىَّ وَإِنْ هُمْ إِلَّا يَظُنُّونَ

Inherited Words 
Reading Al-Baqarah (2:78–79) through the Hadith

After speaking about those who concealed what they knew, 
the Qur’an turns toward another condition of the heart:

﴿وَمِنْهُمْ أُمِّيُّونَ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ الْكِتَابَ إِلَّا أَمَانِيَّ وَإِنْ هُمْ إِلَّا يَظُنُّونَ﴾
 “And among them are unlearned ones who do not know the Scripture except through assumptions and wishful notions, and they do nothing but speculate.” -2:78.

Classical tafsir places these verses within a particular group from Bani Israil.
 Yet the ayah describes something that reaches beyond its immediate context: 
living near revelation without allowing it to reach the heart.

What stands out in the verse is not open rejection, but assumption.

Religion inherited without reflection. 
Words carried without depth. 
A connection to scripture shaped more by familiarity than understanding.

Then the warning deepens:
﴿فَوَيْلٌ لِّلَّذِينَ يَكْتُبُونَ الْكِتَابَ بِأَيْدِيهِمْ ثُمَّ يَقُولُونَ هَٰذَا مِنْ عِندِ اللَّهِ﴾
 “So woe to those who write the Book with their own hands and then say: ‘This is from Allah.’” -2:79

The movement between the two verses feels gradual and unsettling.
 When revelation is no longer approached with humility and honesty, 
perhaps, a person slowly begins to confuse the voice of the self with divine guidance.

Not only by misunderstanding divine speech, 
but eventually by speaking in its name.

Generations later, the Prophet ﷺ warned of people 
who would recite the Qur’an abundantly, 
yet remain untouched by it:

“يقرؤون القرآن لا يجاوز تراقيهم”
 “They recite the Qur’an, but it does not go beyond their throats.” 
- Sahih Muslim 1066; Sahih Al-Bukhari  6934

The hadith was spoken about a particular group 
known for outward religiosity and constant recitation, 
yet lacking inward understanding and mercy. 

But its warning feels timeless. 
The tongue may remain full of sacred words
 while the heart slowly loses its awe before them.

Perhaps this is why these ayahs speak with such gravity. 
Revelation is not only something to preserve, 
but something to stand before with sincerity.
