وَأَخْرَجَتِ ٱلْأَرْضُ أَثْقَالَهَا

* في اليوم العصيب تلقي الأرضُ ما في بطنها وتتخلى، فلا يبقى مخبوءٌ فيها ولا في صدور الناس، فهنيئًا لمن كان باطنه خيرًا من ظاهره.

From Recitation to Reflection 
Nothing Is Lost

Isha Prayer · Surah Az-Zalzalah (99:1–8)

Last evening’s recitation began with the earth itself.
The ground beneath us—something so familiar that we rarely think about it—was suddenly no longer still.
It shook.
It brought out what it had been carrying.
And then came a verse that stayed with me:
﴿يَوْمَئِذٍ تُحَدِّثُ أَخْبَارَهَا﴾
“That Day it will report its news.”
تُحَدِّثُ (tuḥaddithu), from the root ح-د-ث, carries the sense of telling or relating what happened.
The earth will have news to tell.

So much of what we do seems to simply pass. 
A moment happens, a deed is done, and life moves on. 
Eventually, even our own memory may let it fade.
Yet the verses leave us with a very different picture.
﴿بِأَنَّ رَبَّكَ أَوْحَىٰ لَهَا﴾
“Because your Lord will have commanded it.”
What happened upon the earth has not simply disappeared with time. By the command of Allah ﷻ, the earth itself will speak of what took place upon it.

From what the earth will tell, the surah turns to what people themselves will be shown.
﴿يَوْمَئِذٍ يَصْدُرُ النَّاسُ أَشْتَاتًا لِّيُرَوْا أَعْمَالَهُمْ﴾
“That Day people will proceed in separate groups to be shown their deeds.”
What once belonged to an ordinary day, perhaps hardly noticed at the time, will be brought before the person who did it.

And here the scale of the surah changes completely.
It began with the whole earth shaking.
It ends with something almost too small to notice.
﴿فَمَن يَعْمَلْ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ خَيْرًا يَرَهُ ۝ وَمَن يَعْمَلْ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ شَرًّا يَرَهُ﴾
“So whoever does a particle’s weight of good will see it, and whoever does a particle’s weight of evil will see it.”
مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ (mithqāla dharrah)—the weight of something exceedingly small.

From the shaking of the entire earth, the surah gradually draws our attention to the smallest of our deeds.
And from here, it becomes difficult not to think about everyday life.

So much of life is made of small things.
A kindness that took only a moment.
A word held back when it could have hurt someone.
A little help given without anyone noticing.
But small things can carry harm too—a careless word, a small injustice, something we might dismiss and quickly move on from.
Most of these moments pass without much thought. 
But the final verses make it difficult to call any of them insignificant.

Then the final word of both verses brings everything together:
يَرَهُ — yarahu — “He will see it.”
The good.
And the evil.
By the end of the surah, the immense shaking of the earth has led us all the way to the smallest moments of an ordinary day.

Nothing has to be great to matter.
Nothing is lost simply because it was small.
