نحن اعلم بما يقولون اذ يقول امثلهم طريقة ان لبثتم الا يوما

نَّحْنُ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا يَقُولُونَ إِذْ يَقُولُ أَمْثَلُهُمْ طَرِيقَةً إِن لَّبِثْتُمْ إِلَّا يَوْمًا

أي: يقول بعضهم لبعض في السرّ: إن لبثتم في الدنيا إلا عشر ليال؛ وذلك لاستقلالهم مدّة الدنيا. وقيل: يعنون لبثهم في القبور. (يقول أمثلهم طريقةً إن لبثتم إلا يومًا) أي: يقول أعلمهم بالأمور؛ فالإضافة إليهم. (إن لبثتم إلا يومًا): واحدًا؛ فاستقل المدّة أشدَّ مما استقلها غيره. ابن جزي:2/24.
السؤال: كيف دلّت هذه الآية على حقارة الدنيا؟

والمقصود من هذا: الندم العظيم؛ كيف ضيعوا الأوقات القصيرة، وقطعوها ساهين لاهين، معرضين عما ينفعهم، مقبلين على ما يضرهم، فها قد حضر الجزاء، وحَقَّ الوعيد، فلم يبق إلا الندم، والدعاء بالويل والثبور. السعدي:513.

How scary, that we humans spend all our time and energy in this world for things that do not please Allah swt or even displease Allah swt, We study so hard to consume knowledge that does not benefit and work even harder to earn money. Yet on the day of judgement we will realize that we only have lived in this world for less than a day. 

This verse personally is the most scary and reminding verse to me.

In the present world, man ignores the life hereafter, as if it were something very distant. But, after the advent of Doomsday, he will feel that the life of this world was nothing but a few numbered days, and the entire long life thereafter, stretching out before him into eternity, is the actual and ultimate reality.

I reflected on the transient nature of time, especially considering how fast Ramadan seems to come and go every year. During a recent suhoor, for example, my parents were saying, 'It's amazing how fast the whole month goes by.'


So then, in my head, somehow I started to compare our perception of time right now with our perception of time when we will be standing alone on the Day of Judgement, for they seem to be completely the opposite of each other.


During the days of Ramadan, there's a greater experience of pattern, sequence, and predictability in how we go through our days. The sun rises and sets, the moon is born and it repeatedly disappears again, the stars slowly swing across the sky and fade away, even our fasting and eating are synchronized with the specific time of the day, and so on, which all contribute to our experience of time itself.


Our sense of familiarity and bonding with our family members and fellow brothers and sisters also seems to heighten a little bit during Ramadan, I think. And this dimension of Ramadan may thus be another factor that adds to our experience of time going by unusually fast during these days; the closeness and shared experiences make time go even faster.


But, now, if we compare that with the events of the Day of Judgement, we notice the exact opposite: there is no pattern, sequence, or familiarity now. The atmosphere is filled with unpredictability and an anticipation of what might happen next. The entire earth will become plain and humbled. And each of us will be running away from our own parents, brothers, spouses, etc.


And Allah says that the Day will be a Day 'fifty thousand years in length' (70:4), as if time came to a cruel and grinding halt and, in comparison to that, it would feel as if our time here on earth was just a matter of days, or even less than a day.


‎يَتَخَٰفَتُونَ بَيْنَهُمْ إِن لَّبِثْتُمْ إِلَّا عَشْرًا ٭ نَّحْنُ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا يَقُولُونَ إِذْ يَقُولُ أَمْثَلُهُمْ طَرِيقَةً إِن لَّبِثْتُمْ إِلَّا يَوْمًا


'(On that Day) they will whisper among themselves, 'You stayed no more than ten days on the earth.' We know best what they will say - the most reasonable of them will say, 'You stayed no more than a day!'' (20:103-104)
