وفي إضافة (ربّ) إلى ضمير المخاطبين ضرب من الإِغراء بالدعاء؛ أي: لأنكم أقرب إلى استجابته لكم، ولمَّا ظنُّوهم أرجى للاستجابة؛ سألوا التخفيف يومًا من أزمنة العذاب، وهو أنفع لهم من تخفيف قوة النار الذي سألوه من مستكبريهم. ابن عاشور:24/164.

Tormented by the punishment of hellfire these people plead to the angels saying 'Pray to your Rabb'. It reveals a lot about the grim predicament of the inmates of Hell: they can understand that they are no longer in a position to make dua and call upon Allah by 'O my Rabb'— an expression that implies the slave's closeness to His Loving and Caring Master and how he is allowed to beg Him directly to fulfill his needs. Now that those people ended up in Jahannam that beautiful connection is cut off, which means the ayah 'When My slaves ask you ˹O Prophet˺ about Me: I am truly near. I respond to one’s prayer when they call upon Me.' is no longer applicable to them. Imagine not being able to claim your relationship with Allah or to talk to Him— it would be the darkest misery of all. Ma'az Allah! A sheer sense of abandonment will ceaselessly consume the people of Jahannam whose depth has been described as follows: 

'. . . for we have been informed by the Prophet (ﷺ) that a stone would be thrown at one side of the Hell and it would travel down for seventy years but would not reach its bottom.' [Muslim] 

Ya Allah, shroud us in Your mercy and distance us from the Fire. Ya Rabb, rescue us from the harm of the wrongdoing people as they conspire against us.

May Allah envelop us in His mercy and compassion, and distance us from the Fire. May He rescue us from the plots and conspiracies of those who seek to harm us. May we always seek His forgiveness and strive to strengthen our relationship with Him.
