In my culture when I'm walking with my friend trying to go somewhere and he takes the obvious wrong turn, I'll watch him for a bit and just ask: "where are you going?". like a sarcastic rhetorical question, almost as if to say: what are you looking for over there when the destination is this way? as if it's obvious.


With that context in mind, hearing this verse really hit me hard. It instantly made me think about my life, about how I've been living these past few weeks and months distant from Allah and drowning in this world. It was almost like Allah was asking me: "what are you looking for over there?, what is it that's making you take the obvious wrong turn so confidently in such large strides?, "are you thinking straight, are you even aware of where you're going?". 

It really shakes me up. Often I can be in situations where I'm just heedless, going through the days focused on the dunya, but its moments like these that make me reflect and remember that at the end of the day I won't find what I want in the dunya. the meaning of life. the purpose. striving to please Allah. these things aren't found through heedlessly indulging in pleasures, in carelessly delaying prayers, in hopelessly worrying about trivial matters. these are found in Islam. truly I have taken the obvious wrong turn and these verse is a reminder to come back to Allah, and to come back to Islam.

"So where are you going?" (فَأَيْنَ تَذْهَبُونَ) — Surah At-Takwir, 81:26.

I came across this verse today while scrolling through the noise of social media. In a world full of distractions and negativity, this question hit me with a force I can’t explain. It felt like a direct call from Allah (SWT) to my soul. Lately, I have been praying for Allah to ease my affairs, forgive my sins, and open doors of guidance for me. I’ve been searching for meaning, one Surah at a time, but often felt I was searching alone.

When I read, "So where are you going?", I immediately felt the need to reflect deeper. That search led me, by what I now realize was not a coincidence, but Qadr (Divine Decree), to this very platform, QuranReflect.

I am amazed because, despite all my time online, I never knew a place like this existed, a place filled with light, free from useless talk, centered only on His Words. It feels like Allah answered my prayer for direction by asking me a question that stopped my heart, then showing me exactly where I should be going: back to the Quran.

Alhamdulillah for being guided to this community. This verse was the wake-up call I needed to realize that no matter how lost we feel in the "scroll" of life, Allah is always ready to redirect us toward Him.

SubhanAllah. I love this verse. It trulyvfacilitates introspection. 

After describing all the evidence of Allah's creation, Surah At-Takwir raises the question to mankind, 'So where are you going?' As believers, we have unwavering faith in every aspect of faith, but are we truly grasping the essence of those beliefs in our lives? Everything appears clear like flowing water, but are we reaping the rewards of adhering to Allah's guidance in our way of life?

Our faith is steadfast, yet we find ourselves drowning in apathy. We love Muhammad (peace be upon him), but that love doesn't wake us for Fajr prayer. We have full faith in the Day of Judgment, yet the fear of that day fails to stir our hearts. We know and understand everything, but when it comes to implementation, we seem lost in the wilderness.

When Surah At-Takwir asks the question for humanity, if I turn it towards myself, where does its relevance stand? Reflecting, Allah is asking me, 'So where are you going?'

Indeed, where am I going? Why am I constantly veering towards darkness? I see all arrangements of light, yet why have I chosen darkness as my life's destination? The paths to life's goals and objectives are wide open before me, yet why do I struggle to move forward on that eternal path?

Allah asks, 'Where are you going?' But without Allah, where will I end up? Who else is there for me but Him? Which path can offer me the joys of liberation and the taste of freedom?

Venturing down the path without Allah leads to boundless darkness. At the end of that path lies endless darkness, illuminated only by the raging fire He has created for the misguided, the obstinate, and the arrogant. The decision is mine – will I journey towards the light or lose myself in the abyss of darkness? I must stand before the mirror and ask myself, 'Where am I really going?'

This is from the most powerful questions posed in the Qur'an. Allah (swt) speaks of guidance in a lucid and clear manner and then poses this question. Imagine getting into your car and driving, but driving aimlessly, using time, fuel, resources, but not heading in any purposeful direction. In this somnambulate and wayward trip, one of the greatest things one can do is STOP, and ask themselves: 'Where are you headed?'. Our ephemeral world has a pull, our desires have the potential to grow and take over, our mundane and repeated lifestyles have a way to sink the human spirit in the abyss of insignificance, yet, there is a glimmer of hope: self-accounting, to assess how far we have strayed and to evaluate if further journeying on this trajectory is fruitful by any measure. I find myself asking this question many times and it has always put me in a reflective state and urged me to recalibrate the destination that I've put in the GPS of my life. 

'Where are you headed?' - An articulation of the only correct answer to this question would be 'In search of the pleasure of God', which can be mirrored as, 'In search of optimizing myself'. 

So, where are you headed?

This ayah is a bit scary but how often we take lessons??

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Especially Merciful,

Ibn Jawzi Rahimullah said:

'This world is a bridge and a bridge should not be taken as a home.' 

The world is something we have to ‘go through’ and pass through. The only way to pass through it successfully is through the Qur’an and sunnah. There is no other way that will give true direction and understanding as to why we have been created? where we are going and where are we headed to?

Obstacles and tests will occur in this temporary world, but the Qur’an and sunnah will tell you how to deal with them. Both pain and blessings serve purpose. What other way will promise you huge reward for patience in pain?There are thorns in this world but the Qur’an and sunnah will not allow you to get caught in them, it will give you a clear view to everlasting success.

This clear view is through the Qur’an and sunnah; adhering to it and acting upon it, and the One who brings you towards understanding is only the Most Merciful - Allah. Through the Qur’an a person should only become more cognisant of their Creator and more grateful. 

May we be humbly submissive to be in receipt of Allah’s love and Guidance. May we attain paradise by His Mercy - Allahumma Ameen.

Where else can we go?

To whom else other than Allah can we trust with our burdens to alleviate them?

To whom else other than Allah can we give our heart to protect, mend, cleanse, and heal?

To whom else other than Allah can we call unto in the most dire of circumstances at any time of night or day?

I feel Allah gives us the key to this path in verse 27 - the Quran, a reminder to the entire world.

May our path to Him be paved with divine love, light and grace. Ameen.
