والحب ذو العصف والريحان

وَٱلْحَبُّ ذُو ٱلْعَصْفِ وَٱلرَّيْحَانُ

The world is like a mirror, because in it we get a reflection of some of Allah's attributes in countless ways. I felt that this is one of the underlying messages in Surah Ar-Rahman because it begins by mentioning Allah's greatest attribute, "Ar-Rahman" (55:1), and then calls us to reflect on the blessings and the awe-inspiring nature of the universe: it focuses heavily on His creations, such as the harmony between the sun and the moon, the fruits, date palms, and grains on the earth, and the stars and the trees all prostrating to their Creator, and the creation of Jinn, Heaven, and Hell, as if there's a link between all these things and "Ar-Rahman." Not just the cosmos, but the happenings in our own lives are also a reflection of His Mercy - our emotions, our relationships, our losses and gains, our sickness and our health - they all reflect that Allah is the Provider, the Sustainer, and the One who has power over all things.

Indeed, alhamdulillah. Allah's names are truly incomparable, but at least we can still get a very small glimpse in this physical world as a reflection of His attributes. 

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Gracious,

Allah the Almighty starts with this beautiful Surah with His attribute and Name ‘Ar Rahman’ and then in the ayats afterwards He gives the reader examples of His Mercy and Kindness. The very first one Allah the Most Gracious has mentioned is the ‘Qur’an’.

The Qur’an is the greatest mercy upon mankind. It contains 'all that is good and deters against all that is evil' (Tafsir As sa’di pg 371). Surely the greatest blessing deserves our time, contemplation and action.  

The Qur’an is not to be taken from the shelf once in a while, it should be recited and reflected upon if possible daily especially with the Qur’an at our fingertips even if it is only an ayah per day. For the Qur’an guides to all that is good and upright and ‘deters’ evil.  The Qur’an is also a protection in this world and in the coming stages of our existence. 

So we must give the Qur’an it’s true respect and we must be in constant gratitude for Allah’s mercy and love letter to each and everyone of us.

Action - schedule more time for the Qur’an and contemplate how we can apply the Qur’an.

One of the first translations I heard for this ayah was: 

'husked grain and scented herbs' 

It made me think about the importance of being grateful for the seemingly little things in life (that are actually huge blessings).
