كُلُّ نَفْسٍۭ بِمَا كَسَبَتْ رَهِينَةٌ ٣٨

The word translated to mean retained in this āyah is رهينة which also means 'pledged'. It comes from the word رهن which is a security that a borrower gives to his creditor in case he is unable to fulfill his obligation of paying off the debt. If the debtor fails to pay the debt, he will lose the pledged security (رهن) to the creditor who is free to sell it in order to collect the amount he lent the borrower.

So when Allah SWT tells us our souls...

The Qur'an has this theme where it puts the duty on you -- It's YOUR job to take action, to make the decision, to CHOOSE. One of the central themes in Islam is accountability, that every human walking this Earth will have to take account for his deeds in life. This belief of accountability is the not-so-secret, secret to fixing the world. Imagine if everyone doing something bad, knew they would be punished for it, thus not making the sin worth it...
