ما كان للمشركين ان يعمروا مساجد الله شاهدين على انفسهم بالكفر اولايك حبطت اعمالهم وفي النار هم خالدون ١٧
مَا كَانَ لِلْمُشْرِكِينَ أَن يَعْمُرُوا۟ مَسَـٰجِدَ ٱللَّهِ شَـٰهِدِينَ عَلَىٰٓ أَنفُسِهِم بِٱلْكُفْرِ ۚ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ حَبِطَتْ أَعْمَـٰلُهُمْ وَفِى ٱلنَّارِ هُمْ خَـٰلِدُونَ ١٧

It is not for the polytheists to maintain the mosques of Allah while they openly profess disbelief. Their deeds are void, and they will be in the Fire forever.

This reading has the plural, as the polytheists were forbidden from maintaining any place of worship dedicated to the One God.
مَسْجِدَ ٱللَّهِ
masjida Llāhi
"God's Mosque"
This reading in the singular refers particularly to the Sacred Mosque in Makkah, and the point is generalised with the plural in the following ayah.
