Readings
يَرْحَمْنَا رَبُّنَا وَيَغْفِرْ لَنَا
la-in lam yarḥamnā rabbunā wa-yaghfir lanā
“If our Lord does not have mercy on us and forgive us…”
In this reading, the Israelites plea to God indirectly through this statement. ‘Our Lord’ is nominative as the subject of the verb.
تَرْحَمْنَا رَبَّنَا وَتَغْفِرْ لَنَا
la-in lam tarḥamnā rabbanā wa-taghfir lanā
“If you do not have mercy on us, (O) our Lord, and forgive us...”
In this reading, the verbs address God in the second person, and ‘Our Lord’ is accusative by the vocative.

Explanation

These readings are complementary in meaning, as one expresses their regret and the other gives the words of their plea [al-Mahdawi].
