Readings
آزَرَ
āzara
“Abraham said to his father, Azar: do you take idols as gods?”
In the majority reading, Āzar is genitive as the name of the father.
آزَرُ
āzaru
“Abraham said to his father: ‘Azar, do you take idols as gods?’”
In this reading, Abraham (pbuh) begins his speech by addressing his father by name.

Explanation

These readings are complementary in meaning. The exegetes have some debate over whether Azar was the actual father of Abraham, or an uncle who is described as his father. There are also alternative opinions concerning this name, with some interpreting the verse on the basis that it was the name of an idol [al-Alusi].
