يَهْدِى بِهِ ٱللَّهُ مَنِ ٱتَّبَعَ رِضْوَٰنَهُۥ سُبُلَ ٱلسَّلَـٰمِ وَيُخْرِجُهُم مِّنَ ٱلظُّلُمَـٰتِ إِلَى ٱلنُّورِ بِإِذْنِهِۦ وَيَهْدِيهِمْ إِلَىٰ صِرَٰطٍ مُّسْتَقِيمٍ

As the month of Ramadan moves forward and the days quietly pass, I find myself thinking more about guidance. The more I read the Qur’an, the more I notice how often it speaks about being guided, staying guided, and not losing that direction. It feels less like a distant concept and more like something very personal.

We ask every day, “Guide us to the straight path.” I’ve said that verse countless times in my life. But in Ramadan, it feels different. Slower. Heavier. More sincere. Maybe because fasting strips away distractions, or maybe because hunger makes you more aware of your dependence on Allah.

Ramadan is not just about controlling the body. It is about recalibrating the heart. When the noise reduces,  less food, less talk, less indulgence,  something inside becomes clearer. you start to notice your intentions. Your reactions. Your weaknesses. And in that awareness, the need for guidance becomes real.

I’m realizing that guidance is not a one-time event. It’s something we need constantly. Every day. Every decision. Ramadan just reminds me how much I rely on it and how much I still need it.

Surah Al-Fatiha 1:6
Guidance begins with admitting we cannot find the right path without Allah.

Surah Al-Baqarah 2:2
The Qur’an is guidance, but only hearts with taqwa benefit from it.

 Surah Al-Baqarah 2:142
True guidance is ultimately an act of Allah’s will, not human intelligence alone.

Surah Aal-E-Imran 3:101
Holding firmly to Allah is the surest way to remain on the straight path.

Surah An-Nisa 4:175
Faith and reliance invite Allah to guide us closer to Him.

Surah Al-Ma'idah 5:16
Seeking Allah’s pleasure opens doors to paths of peace.

 Surah Al-An'am 6:125
Guidance feels like expansion of the heart, not pressure upon it.

 Surah Al-A'raf 7:43
Even in Paradise, believers recognize that guidance was a gift, not an achievement.

Surah At-Tawbah 9:33
The Prophet’s mission itself is guidance for humanity.

It Is important to realize when Allah sais He guides whom He wills, that guidance is only in the hands of Allah and he gives it based on the means (asbab) taken by the servant to achieve that guidance . The same way rizq and provision is only on Allahs hands and he gives it to whom he wills but the servant is expected to exhaust the means in reaching the provision Allah has decreed for him. So we see in the 2 following verses some of the means of gaining the guidance of Allah such as pursuing His pleasure , and in there 3rd verse I quoted he mentions actually seeking the guidance. So if you see that someone is not guided, it is true that Allah did not will for their guidance (for now at least) however the only one to blame for his misguidance is himself and not Allah because had he taken the means to achieve that guidance Allah would have given it to him as he promises

Allah wills to guide those who pursue His pleasure (5:16) and He promises to increase the guidance of those who take the first step to seek it (47:17).

There was only one thing I kept asking Allah for after I accepted Islam . my mother’s guidance.

Every Ramadan, my duas were the same. Tears. Sujood. Begging Allah for her heart to open. I didn’t want anything from this dunya more than I wanted Jannah for my mother.

But hidayah… it’s not something we control. Allah gives it to the one who reflects, the one who truly searches.

For years, I spoke to her gently. I explained. I cried. I never forced her. And one day she asked me the most innocent question:

“If I stop praying to images… how do I imagine Allah? How do I feel Him if I cannot picture Him?”

That was the moment I knew. The question wasn’t rejection it was reflection. It was a heart trying to understand Tawheed. It was Allah slowly placing light where I couldn’t see.

And today, in the blessed month of Ramadan, Allah honored her with Shahada.

This was never my achievement. It was Allah’s mercy. Allah guided her. Allah chose her.

Choosing Islam is not easy  especially when it means standing firm despite family, culture, and expectations. I had to learn to stand alone. Now I ask Allah to grant my mother even more strength than He gave me.

If you are reading this, please make dua for her. Ask Allah to keep her firm. Ask Allah to make her steadfast. Ask Allah to protect her heart.

And if you are making dua for someone’s guidance don’t stop.

Allah hears the tears you don’t show anyone.

I’ve always asked myself, and I guess I’m asking you, if you run into a stranger and he/she gave you his/her ears and heart for one short moment, what idea would you plant in her/his head? How Palestine is unjustly occupied? Why institutional racism is real? Why they should vote for as specific political party? Why they should be kind to their parents? Ascribe to your noblest principles and values?

There is one matter that guides to fixing all matters, a conscious submission to Allah, exalted is He, a path paved by His words, the Holy Quran and His Messenger saws.

I would reflect on the beauty and bounty around them. And show them the beauty of Islam through our actions. A complete stranger and a non Muslim (not yet) doesn’t understand the concept of Oneness of Allah nor do they understand submission to Allah.  So we can’t urge them to embrace Islam just like that because they don’t know it
Imagine ourselves if we have to study something we don’t know about— we would initially reject it and the teacher role is to get us interested by relating that study to our own lives.
