O believers! Do not seek the guardianship of those given the Scripture before you and the disbelievers who have made your faith a mockery and amusement. And be mindful of Allah if you are ˹truly˺ believers.

Readings
والْكُفَّارَ
wa-l-kuffāra
“Do not take as allies: those who mock and belittle your religion from those who were given scripture before you; or the (idolatrous) disbelievers”
In this reading, the warning is given against both groups, but only the first (i.e. Jews) are described as mocking the religion of the Muslims.
والْكُفَّارِ
wa-l-kuffāri
“Do not take as allies those who mock and belittle your religion, whether those who were given scripture before you or the (idolatrous) disbelievers”
In this reading, both Jews and idolaters are described as mockers.

Explanation

These readings convey almost the same meaning. There are other passages (see 15:95-6) which make clear that the Makkan idolaters did engage in mockery, even if the first reading here presents that as a particular trait of the Madinan Jews.

He has revealed to you ˹O Prophet˺ the Book in truth, confirming what came before it, as He revealed the Torah and the Gospel
