Indeed, there was a sign for you in the two armies that met in battle—one fighting for the cause of Allah and the other in denial. The believers saw their enemy twice their number.1 But Allah supports with His victory whoever He wills. Surely in this is a lesson for people of insight.

Readings
يَرَوْنَهُمْ
yarawnahum
“they saw them…”
The subject pronoun (third-person plural) refers to the army “fighting in God’s way” described just before.
تَرَوْنَهُمْ
tarawnahum
“you (pl.) see them…”
Here the second-person pronoun is used again after it appeared in “a sign for you (lakum)”, addressing the believers.

Explanation

These two readings amount to the same meanings, though various interpretations are possible. The implication is that the Believers at Badr were made to see the enemy as only double the Muslims’ forces, though in fact they were triple [Makki].

He has revealed to you ˹O Prophet˺ the Book in truth, confirming what came before it, as He revealed the Torah and the Gospel
