فما كان جواب قومه الا ان قالوا اخرجوا ال لوط من قريتكم انهم اناس يتطهرون

۞ فَمَا كَانَ جَوَابَ قَوْمِهِۦٓ إِلَّآ أَن قَالُوٓا۟ أَخْرِجُوٓا۟ ءَالَ لُوطٍ مِّن قَرْيَتِكُمْ ۖ إِنَّهُمْ أُنَاسٌ يَتَطَهَّرُونَ

"they are people who keep themselves pure.” (al-Naml 27:56)

Purity in trying times

   The understanding of taharah (purity) is generally connected to something physical, it refers to the process of cleansing through the removal of filth, whatever its form may be, whether germs orally or other  physical impurities. This cleansing is carried out using an appropriate purifying agent for the situation, such as fire, water, or disinfecting substances.

For physical impurities Allah says, He sent water down : “that He may purify you with it”. (Quran 8:11)

From this usage of the word taharah, the term “physical purity” emerged.

We then encounter another usage of the word taharah in the Qur’an:

Allah says: “Expel the family of Lot from your town; indeed, they are people who keep themselves pure.” (al-Naml 27:56)

And He says: “So give charity before your private consultation, this is better for you and purer.” (al-Mujādilah 58:12)

And He says:   “Indeed, Allah only intends to remove impurity from you, O People of the Household, and to purify you completely.” (al-Ahzāb 33:33)

 What is noticeable in these verses is that purity is not connected to water only, but rather to meanings, values, and the behaviour that flows from them in real life.

Consider the statement of the people of Lot, who described those refraining from immoral acts as “people who keep themselves pure.” 

This means they distanced themselves from indecency, committed to virtue and moral conduct, and continually restrained their souls from following base desires. 

From this Qur’anic usage of the word taharah, the term “spiritual (or moral) purity” can be understood. It refers to the purification of the soul in both belief and behaviour. 

For this reason, the believer is considered constantly pure, as stated in the hadith: “Glory be to Allah, indeed, the believer is never impure.”(Bukhari) <a href="https://sunnah.com/bukhari:283">https://sunnah.com/bukhari:283</a>

 The believer is pure, and nothing emanates from him except what pure wholesome. This calls on us to consciously guard our minds, hearts, gaze from indecency, especially in an age where such things have become increasingly normalised. In doing so, we are not withdrawing from the world, but choosing to protect our faith, for with purity our  hearts remain connected to Allah.
